For a civilization that enthusiastically pats itself on the back for ending race-based chattel slavery (something we basically invented to justify an exploitative economic system), I am continually gobsmacked that so many Americans fail to see the obvious parallels with abortion. Throughout human history, every time those in power have sought to create a distinction between human life and legal personhood, grave evil has resulted.

When I'm reminded that God is perfectly just, I shudder to think what sort of divine wrath we've got coming our way...

But womens health!!1!

Excuse me for assuming that all persons having an abortion identify as female.

I'm so cisgender and privileged.

Did you just assume your own gender and race?????

Love the Drafthouse, but their marketing can definitely seem pushy. I mean, why is Afternoon Tea with period piece movies marketed to women and not men? I like tea and crumpets too, dang it!

Alamo Drafthouse launches a 'women only' screening of 'Wonder Woman,' sparks outrage | Fox News

Warner Brothers can't be happy about this. They're going to get Ghostbuster'ed.

There's a loophole though:
And when we say ‘Women (and People Who Identify As Women) Only,’ we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.”

A bunch of men should show up and declare they are identifying as a woman for the evening.

It was definitely a publicity stunt for Alamo Drafthouse, the owner pretty much confirmed it on r/Austin.

I heard the movie was amazing on its own merits from a few friends. Gonna force the wife to go see it tomorrow night on discount night at the local theater.

Reviews say it was the "positive" turn that DC desperately needed. No brooding, no moral buffer zones to worry about. Just someone being good for the sake of good. I can get behind that.

I'm going to see Wonder Woman Wednesday with a sister, her husband [shameless plug to follow] and my sister-in-law.

I'll let you know.

[Shameless plug: my sister & her hubby own the San Marco Theater here in Jacksonville and are showing the movie. Stop by. Have a beer or three – or some wine. Have some pizza – I highly recommend the ham and cheese panini.]

I heard it was "very good, not great" or "best DC movie by far" from every person I know who has seen it. Not one person with a negative review. Basically everyone seemed to come to the consensus that it was very fun and a good movie, but no one thought it was some revolutionary product like Dark Knight.

I used to work for a chef who spent a lot of time in Jacksonville. He loved it and it sounds like gluttons (me) would enjoy it
I went to a Wendy's in Jacksonville one time because I was driving through and had to pee. Truly terrifying experience. It's like the Detroit of Florida.

Says the dude who lives in Connecticut..... :D
Connecticut is full of rich people and 300 year old buildings.

But his artisanal beanpot scene tho
No italics, I'll show you pics of my collection when I get home. All ceramic, handmade in the USA.

That's going to be hard for any film to ever reach, or at least not until the distant future, when superhero movies have fallen back off and then experience another resurgence.

"Dark Knight" got the "morally ambiguous and shades of gray" thing perfect. Batman was doing it for the right reasons, but had to push the limits to meet the threat, and even stepped overboard, as any sane human might, when pushed to his own personal boundaries. He cracked without completely losing it. And that was refreshing in the face of the usual straight "good versus evil."

It also helps that there was a once-in-a-generation performance from Ledger (IMO, of course), and that the "dark, brooding" tone/setting wasn't overplayed yet. The plot was good, kept you guessing, and there weren't any lulls. The "slow" parts of the movie were Ledger talking to people (which was amazing) or Alfred talking to Bruce (also amazing).

Now, even if a film was done just as well as "Dark Knight," it would be considered old news. "Dark Knight" made "dark and brooding" cool, but also ruined it at the same time by being so damn good.

This...

The dark and brooding was character specific. Heck, they even pull it off somewhat with Lego Batman. I think it hurt them with Superman going that way. Except for some turns in the comics, Superman is upbeat and good for the sake of being good to the casual comics follower (h/t IrishLion). To make the whole universe be dark and brooding is unnecessary IMHO. They can do that without becoming Marvel clones.

Generally speaking, I was always more of a fan of the Marvel characters but it was not a conscious choice. Spiderman wasn't that much older than me (when I started following him) and he had school issues. I had school issues. Then I got to know other Marvel heroes thru Spidey's interaction with them. I liked Batman too and still love Michael Keaton's performance in the first modern Batman movie...hated what that series went on to become (although I do like to watch Batman & Robin because it is so bad and do a MST3K/RiffTrax dialogue while watching it). Bale movies were great. I think Cavill fits Superman well, I think they just need to brighten things up a little bit at least. Flash the movie is getting scary because they are having a time keeping a director. I personally look forward to Wonder Woman (used to watch Lynda Carter back in the day). I want to see what Marvel does with Captain Marvel and wish the would give Black Widow a movie or at least a team up movie with "arrow-guy" (thx Paul Rudd)...could have a gratuitous Tony Stank or Nick Fury cameo. Also, will be fun to see Wasp too.

Just you wait. The dark, gritty reboots of the dark, gritty reboots are really going to blow you away.
