Really think you guys are sleeping on Philly:

1. All the amenities of a big city (5th largest in country) but without the ludicrous cost of living.

2. Blue collar attitude but there are plenty of attractive young people. Won't find as many of the d-bag finance types that you'd get in NYC/Chicago

3. Killer sports scene

4. Really, really underrated food scene. Can't stress this enough. BYOBs are fairly unique to Philly and are God's gift to the Earth.

5. Can easily escape the city. I'm an outdoorsy type and can drive 1 hour and be in the country fishing on some reknowned trout streams. I feel like it takes 2 hours just to get out of the NYC metro.

I lived in Denver for 10 years and loved that town. So much going for it in weather, women, activities, music, food and culture. Over 300+ days of sunshine with a Rocky Mtn backdrop. Here are some cities I dig, and not dig... in no particular order

Buffalo - this town can eat shit.
Detroit - although, the metro isn't bad.
NYC - Sorry GK and Grahambo. Just not my speed.
Vegas - This town shouldn't exist.

I know what you mean about Vegas. I was their this past weekend. My friend saw two homeless guys beating the shit out of each other in front of Starbucks. Real sketchy place. A weekend was enough for me.

Some people absolutely love NYC. A lot of my best friends live there now and wouldn't dream of being anywhere else. Which is great, because I use this inexplicable flaw in judgement to trim my Godparents list for any future children I may have.

In my life, I've been to NYC probably 15-20 times. It's a short drive up 95. I've been there for pleasure, I've been there for business. I've been there for weekends, and I've been there for weeks. I have family up there, too.

The thing about NYC is that you first have to accept that you're trapped in a maze of buildings like a fucking lab rat. It's all dirty and smells... I don't even know how to describe the stench. Urine mixed with moldy pizza? No city reeks like NYC. There is no green anywhere save that pathetic excuse for a park.

Everything in Manhattan is expensive. Everything. The saving grace of going to NYC is that when you get back DC prices seem reasonable.

Are there hot girls? Sure, there are hot girls in every city... that's not even what I was talking about though. But there are a ton of just straight ugly, horrible human beings in NYC. The scum of the freaking planet. NYC has literally the worst people anywhere this side of Kandahar.

If we do want to talk about girls, the ones that ARE attractive are all either:
1. Crazy.
2. Unapproachable bitches/snobs.
3. Already on the dick of some asshole finance bro.

Got to NYC for the first time about 5 years ago. Coming in across the river and bingo, two homeless drunks throwing down on each other. Laughed my ass off and thought what a welcome!

I grew up in a small, hillbilly town in rural VA, then went to college in a small, non-hillybilly town in rural VA. I'm moving to Richmond in about a month, and it will be my first time living in a city. I'm a country boy, but not in the stereotypical sense (don't enjoy hunting, fishing, country music, etc.). I do enjoy a more laid-back, slow-paced lifestyle though. It's just what I'm used to, I suppose.

Does anyone have any thoughts (good or bad) on Richmond?

As for my favorite/least-favorite cities, I've always enjoyed my visits to Cincinnati, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Lexington KY. I hated Cleveland and D.C., and didn't see what was so great about NYC, personally. I've only been to Baltimore once but enjoyed my stay there as well. Miami is a nice place to visit but I don't believe I'd ever want to live there...

You're right, 1 championship since 1983 is pretty killer.

I've been to all those cities and I'd say Cleveland without a doubt. You can live downtown (for relatively cheap) and you don't have to deal with the ghetto that is the suburbs/outskirts of downtown. 3 major sports teams that you can get cheap tickets to and a food scene that's actually pretty great.

I'm not a city snob. I personally hate cities. What bugs me is people who CLAIM to be from a city, but aren't. My wife grew up in Phoenixville, PA. Not Philadelphia, Phoenixville. If you're from Dekalb, say you're from Dekalb. You're not from Chicago.

No one from DeKalb says they are from Chicago. The "Chicagoland" membership stops at Aurora. People from Chicagoland only say they are from Chicago to those NOT from Chicagoland. Nobody from Hinsdale tells someone born and raised in the city they are from Chicago... because A... you know from their accent that they are from the city which leads to B... The person from the city would immediately set them straight and tell them, "You's guys ain't from Chicago!"

I hate it, personally. Cost of living is sky-high and traffic is an absolute nightmare. You have to take the Metro if you want to get anywhere.

I'm moving to Seattle two weeks from today.
So hopefully Seattle is? Haha

Seattle is great! My #2 US city outside of SD. I lived in Bellingham for a year and go back to Seattle every year or 2. Check out Whidbey Island, it is worth the ferry ride out. Also, you must see the Olympic Nat'l Forest.

BYOBs are Bring Your Own Beverage restaurants. The liquor license laws are fucked up in PA so not every restaurant can have one. Many restaurants in Philadelphia operate as a BYOB where patrons can bring their own wine, beer, liquor, whatever.

The reason this is awesome is because it keeps down the bill and it allows restaurant owners to take more creative risks when opening their joint. Owners aren't forced to pay arm and leg up-front for a liquor license. Most of the objectively best restaurants in Philly are BYOBs for this reason.

I was born there and I can say without a doubt... Gary is the greatest city in America to be FROM.

Buffalo for sure. I hear everybody there drinks, grills, and has sex. Everything is bigger in Buffalo, especially the Buffalo Dogs.

Agreed, BYOBs are the best. We have a lot of them in Chicago when the restaurant is too close to a school or for some similar zoning-related reason, the restaurant can't get a liquor license. So much fun.

Ha - A couple of guys tried to pick me up in Florence, AL one time. That was an experience.

I don't think I will ever live in a major city again but I do enjoy spending time in them.

Boston is probably my favorite. The combination of the historical aspects of the city and the college crowd make it a great place to visit. The food is great too(although I think scrod is way overrated). I do hate the way people drive though.

Nashville is a great town too.


There are some mid-sized cities that I really like.

Downtown Chattanooga is a great place - especially for a family. The minor league ballpark, aquarium, river bank, and some of the best restaurants I have ever had are in Chattanooga.

I also really like what is happening in Richmond, VA. The re-gentrification of the old tobacco warehouses into condos and new eateries make it a great destination.

Just on the outskirts of downtown Richmond is a tiny little place called Millie's Diner. It's fantastic. They do not have "diner" style food.

Not to the extent of Philly. I'd say almost 50% of all nice restaurants are BYOB (maybe more).

Have a cousin in Richmond. All I will say is make sure you live in the right area. If you do, great city. If you don't, extremely dangerous. But that can probably be said about any city.

Newark is literally the worst place in the world. I have been there a thousand too many times.
