The only games I thought Rees looked ok were the Army and Miami game. He is not built to move this offense. We need a qb who can move. Not saying Crist will be perfect fit either. Bu he does seem to be the better fit.
Problem is Crist may not last the whole season.

I think that this is a proper place for this question: where are our wide receivers going to play?? I thought that I knew what was going on until I picked up the August issue of Blue&Gold Illustrated and read the "2011 Offensive Depth Chart". In that magazine it is stated that Theo Riddick is now outside at the X receiver with Walker and Daniels backing him up, TJ is now in the slot with Toma and Farley backing him up. Floyd is in his regular position with Goodman backing him up.

I apologize to the rest of you for being behind the times, but when did these switches happen, and are they going forward like this in current workouts?? Thanks for the info.

The recent UND practice video on the WRs described the following two-deep: (1) Floyd and (2) Smith at the W; (1) Riddick and (2) Toma at the Z; with (1) Jones and (2) Goodman at the X.

Riddick and Jones have been cross-training at both the Z and the X, which may be the source of some of BGI's confusion; but their primary positions are unchanged from last season. Kelly will want his two most talented receivers (Floyd and Riddick) on the field when we go into our heavy sets, so Riddick getting some looks at the X makes sense.

TJ at Z is probably for the sake of depth in case Riddick goes down; there's a big drop off between Riddick and Toma in explosiveness, but less so between Riddick and Jones.

Farley is getting reps as the 3rd Z. Daniels is reportedly pushing Goodman for the #2 X. I haven't heard anything about Walker, so my expectations for him remain low.

Someone may correct me if I am wrong but I think it is Riddick in then slot with Toma and Farley backing up with TJ outside with Goodman, Daniels, and Massa.

Wood On A Mission

Hayden Moore
8/15/11

...

As the team prepares for the season opener on Sept. 3 against South Florida, Wood finds himself in stiff competition with fellow sophomore and roommate Bennett Jackson for the nickleback position.

...

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Wood is currently a two deep behind Blanton at the field corner position.

...

“Right now, I am just trying to secure my third spot at corner and some kind of way getting into the rotation with R.J. and Gary (Gray),” Wood affirmed.

Been a couple of busy days here for me, so I'm a little out of the loop. But going back a couple of days, when BK said that 6 to 10 freshmen would play this year, did you guys take that to mean we'd see 6 to 10 freshmen get snaps with the offense or defense during games, or is he including special teams work as well? I'd have to guess that he he is talking about 6 to 10 guys getting snaps on offense or defense, and that a few more would get special teams time. I'd be surprised to see them reserve eligibility for 15 or so guys.

These are all ISD updates via twitter from this morning:

Kelly said he would put his 22 against anybody else, but must build more depth

Kelly says he has 7 to 8 days of situational work with QB's to see how they perform

Kelly says team has become acclimated to his style of coaching. Team knows what he wants from them

Kelly says Dayne Crist is a "much better football player" than he was a year ago. Has had to flush out previous system teaching

Kelly says DaVaris Daniels, George Atkinson, and Cam McDaniel will play this year. Not ready yet mentally, but impressive athletically

Kelly says team lacks depth on the offensive side of the ball, which must be addressed through recruiting

Kelly says Cierre Wood has been complete as a player all camp

Kelly says Floyd doesn't have any catching up to do

Kelly says Fleming has overwhelmed some of the offensive players. Can be an impact player

Kelly says Fleming has taken next step as a player. Can rush and cover

Has anyone else noticed how much Kelly has slammed Charlie Weis and staff without directly saying it. Every press conference or anything seems to have some kind of indirect quote to sting that staff. Can anyone tell that Kelly likes Fleming? Guy really loves him. Can't wait to see his transition. I've been calling and waiting since his Sophomore year to see this guy explode.

It's pretty exciting that Fleming is drawing that level of praise.

The primary area of concern on defense (for me) is the ability to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Having a star-level OLB in a 3-4 defense is huge for this aspect of the game.

If the 900+ pound defensive front can occupy the offensive line then Fleming will have plenty of opportunities to show his stuff.

I'm excited to hear that Cierre Wood has been a "complete" player during camp. His only difficulty last year in my eyes was his lack of ability in picking up blockers as well as Allen could. I'm also reserving judgement on Fleming. Kelly can say he's amazing or a monster, but I've been hearing that for two years now and want to see it against South Florida before I get excited.

Some thoughts on the presser:

Kelly was very coy about the "change of pace" QB.

Kelly took a lot of subtle jabs at Weis, but that's probably unavoidable. When he's being asked about the changes made that led to 2010's late success, the easiest way to explain it is by contrasting his approach with that of the past coaching staff.

Kelly attributes the defense's 2010 weakness on passing downs to EJ and KLM having to play too many snaps; in other words, they were too gassed on 3rd and long to rush effectively, and there was no one available to sub in for the role. That's where Tuitt and Lynch come in this year; by putting them in on passing downs, it keeps reads manageable for the freshman (one-gap) so their athleticism can take over, and it keeps EJ and KLM fresh for open downs.

I didn't realize it until Kelly mentioned it, but with Nichols injured, Nick Martin is backing up his brother Zack at LT. Very cool that Zack is getting to mentor his little brother for the very position he plays.

Kelly basically confirmed that Rees' status as a system QB has been a big advantage for him versus Crist, who has had to unlearn Weis' pro-style system.

Every item in that list is interesting.

Couple things left off the list.

Kelly said it is impossible to overlook the defensive performance of all the freshmen.

Kelly loves Louis Nix III as much as Flemming

Kelly said the three biggest games this year are USF, UM, and MSU, because that is where the confidence players garnered from last year becomes the continuity of a new level of performance through a successful campaign, this year.

Molnar has called Wood the fastest running back he ever coached. The fastest at playing the position, reads, blocking, hitting the hole, running routes, catching . . . He called him "electric." Does everybody get it now?

Jonas Grey claims he can beat Cierre in a race, and once ran a 4.37 laser-timed 40 during his recruitment. I know your point about Cierre is beyond just speed, and there is probably not a bigger Cierre fan out there than I am, but I'm just throwing out the thing about Jonas because nobody ever talks about his speed. I thought of him as a "power" back.

Clearly with the speed of Cierre, Jonas and GAIII, there is some big-play potential in the backfield. Add to that the big play ability evident in McD's highlight film, and I think the backfield might be in better shape than some people think. We probably won't run the ball 40 times a game, but Kelly's offense is much more about aiming to get big plays out of the run game than ground and pound.

First off.......Molnar has never coached RBs anywhere else, unless you want to say that he coached RBs at Illinois State, during his stint as Offensive Coordinator. However, his bio lists him as being the O.C./QB/WR coach there, so I doubt he also coached the RBs.

I get that Molnar is high on Wood. I get that Wood is not a bad TB. But, if you want us to believe that Cierre Wood is the next Barry Sanders, or even the next Autry Denson......... forget it.

Who shat in your cereal this morning?

Wood ran for 603 yards and 5.1 YPC as a RS freshman and only having started 6 games. What kind of numbers do you expect him to put up in 2011?

Just want him to help us win, regardless of numbers.

I agree with your sentiment here, but he was a RS freshman (or in ND parlance, a sophomore using his first year of eligibility).
