My amateurish feeling for our D-Line is that, at least last year, Diaco preferred one DE who tended more to speed and gorilla-ism, and one DE who tended more to power and Earth-moving [I say "tended" because both guys can do some of both].

You are exactly right. That's how most 30 fronts are designed. "Anchor" end and "Rush" end. Then you usually have one backer that usually blitzes or plays on the line. Kinda like Shawn Merriman or Demarcus Ware.

They have Pittsburgh, Boston College, and Stanford listed as "land mind" games. Pitt and BC because their defenses were ranked in the top 11 in yards per play allowed. Stanford because it ranked in the top 20 defenses in most stat categories.

Pitt and BC, I'm not buyin at all.

Stanford? And what could potentially be on the line? No sir

Seems to me that BK will have these guys ready to go week in and week out, his attention to detail is amazing

Were Navy and Tulsa in the last millenium?

I see the potential for an undefeated season but I want to see execution on the field to confirm that potential.

Very true BGIF,

I think my mistake is being so optimistic/amped for this coming season that I tend to overlook some things

You are fine NDinFL - obviously it is incredibly hard to run the field, even for a superior team. There are so many things that could go wrong.

But on to a different subject. I watched Kelly's Q&A after the practice, and after he described how he lined up the freshman to expose them to special teams, He told the story about asking Daniels to run a bench route, by calling his number and naming the route. Daniels interpreted that as meaning he wanted him to run a 12 yard route 16 yards deep. Then Kelly made a statement: in effect he said he would give the Freshmen Thurs and Fri to get things down, and if it didn't settle down by then, he would address things with a new plan. Kelly didn't seem happy. What was he referring to? Daniels? Results of putting the Freshmen in special teams positions? Something else?

I just don't think he is one to get locked into a decision (couch, cough Weis cough). They have limited time. If the freshmen are prone to making mistakes in those high leverage roles then he must go in a different direction.

The only real frustration I picked up, and of course I could be totally off base, was in regards to Lych. I sensed that Kelly feels he's doing his own thing a bit. Of course I could be full of bologna.

The above quote was unrelated to the one below. Kelly was merely commenting that Daniels has a lot of talent, but "his head is spinning" right now from trying to learn routes, terminology, etc.

Then Kelly made a statement: in effect he said he would give the Freshmen Thurs and Fri to get things down, and if it didn't settle down by then, he would address things with a new plan. This quote was in reference to whether certain freshman will be able to play a significant role on special teams this season-- specifically McDaniel, Daniels, and G. Atkinson. He basically said that there have been encouraging signs, but the usual inconsistency that comes with being freshman. Thus, he's going to give them a couple more days to see if they get settled, before turning to other options on ST.

I think Kelly would prefer to use underclassmen on ST, but we need serious improvements there, so he's not going to force the issue if they're not ready.

Anybody watch the practice report on und.com for yesterday? Ben Koyack #18 complete owns someone in the rodeo drill. I can't tell who it is, but I'm thinking it might be Danny Spond.

I think that Kelly and his staff have a particular approach to motivating players and sending them messages. I heard the same thing you did, but I think Kelly finds it generally counterproductive to gush about a guy at this stage in his development. Aaron, and any other player at the stage he is in now, must be managed physically and psychologically. Its almost like a carrot and stick approach. Positive reinforcement when they do something right, but equal or greater amounts of admonishment if they do something the wrong way. I wouldn't read too much into Kelly's statements with Lynch. He knows he has something special there and is managing it accordingly.

I love the rodeo drill. Thanks to Keith for breaking down the matchups.

First look at contact: Jumping to conclusions edition | Inside the Irish

Prestwood got eaten alive in his one-on-ones. I really like Nick Martin in the limited videos I've seen of him so far. Lynch and Tuitt seem to be handling themselves well. Hands down, so far, the best I've seen is in Nix. That kid is a monster. BK made a subtle comment that someone noticed earlier about how Cwynar will get about 30 reps, meaning Nix will get the bulk. I'm very excited about the DL. I truly feel that Kap, EJ, and Nix will be "national names" (as BK calls it) this year. Round of applause for Coach Longo.:barbell:

Was definitely not Spond! Was not Rasaba like someone else guessed. (As someone else said, Keith Arnold thinks it was Zeke Motta.)

Thanks, Whiskey! Your information is good and your communication is concise.

I think Keith Arnold guessed it was Motta...it def was Spond. Unless Motta A) is suddenly playing LB B) switched numbers to 13

Could it have been 15, it looked more like a 5 than a 3, as the player looked a little more slender than Spond is currently. Is McCarthy playing?

most of the time these drills pair positions, ol vs dl, rb's and te's vs lb's, wr vs db's. I know Koyak is a frosh but doubt he would be going against McCarthy. IMO is it a LB.

I agree. I wasn't implying he was in the dog house, but Kelly was sending a clear message. Do it our way and you'll be great or don't and you won't be. On a side note, my God did Louis Nix look amazing-an absolute force of nature. He's going to be the best DT we've had since Bryant Young.

Lynch is a wild world-class stallion. Coach needs to handle him perfectly to retain all the incredible instincts, while corralling him just enough so that he's galloping in the right direction. Aaron's so high energy [and high on life] that keeping him closer to terra firma is necessary. Kelly's going to feel this situation out so that Aaron's not too proud of himself too quickly, and is able to take heavy criticism when it is needed.

This is, I believe, Kelly's general coaching demeanor with everyone, but is particularly important with very young Rolls Royces.

So I was absolutely wrong. Sorry for doubting you BESTB! I just talked to one of my best connected guy and he says it was Danny Spond that Ben Koyack buried. Gentlemen, you can talk all you want about the animals on defense, and they deserve everything you say. But if Koyack can do that to Spond again, we have a monster beyond compare to unleash on unsuspecting opposition defenses. Spond is as good as any linebacker at getting pads under and leverage on a blocker, that is unbelievable! Can you imagine what he will do to the poor safeties and corners he plays against. (I also found out Ben is fast enough to be one of our fastest wide receivers.)

No worries brother, I think we are all struggling to occupy our minds until the season starts anyway, so a little "I spy the Irish player getting pancaked" is a nice past time.

What do you think? I have heard that Koyack is incredibly fast. Can you imagine him at wide receiver? Madison would be going, wait a minute, I don't have him on my list! Where is the tape on him! Have a corner cover him! What do you mean they were trying?
