I imagine if he has that kind of ability.... it would be a really nice supplement to the other WRs... I could see him and Floyd, Eifert being a nightmare in the Red Zone if...and it's a big IF... Crist can throw a touch pass. I am still worried about his lack of a touch ball, he has a cannon for an arm, but he missed some pretty vanilla throws last year.

BrandonPertner (Phil Steele's assistant editor) via Twitter:

3 Defenses that may be getting overlooked but just might finish in the Top 10 at end of year. 1. Penn St 2. Florida 3. Notre Dame

I think that was a random list. In other words, here are three teams, one, two, three . . .

If I may "steele" a line here ...

See any potential in Ben Koyack ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know ND is definitely known for producing top notch tight-ends, recently Rudolph and Carlson, does anyone see Koyack's ability to be a very serious threat in the near future?

...

But on to a different subject. I watched Kelly's Q&A after the practice, and after he described how he lined up the freshman to expose them to special teams, He told the story about asking Daniels to run a bench route, by calling his number and naming the route. Daniels interpreted that as meaning he wanted him to run a 12 yard route 16 yards deep. Then Kelly made a statement: in effect he said he would give the Freshmen Thurs and Fri to get things down, and if it didn't settle down by then, he would address things with a new plan. Kelly didn't seem happy. What was he referring to? Daniels? Results of putting the Freshmen in special teams positions? Something else?

I took it that Kelly was noting the difference between athleticism and precise execution.

Golden Tate was an incredibly talented football player but his route running as a freshman receiver was terrible. Daniels arrived on campus a more complete receiver than Tate was he still has much to learn about being a college receiver. Kelly gave him an assignment and he went to the wrong spot on the field.

Athleticism gets you by in high school. It doesn't in college where most of the opponents are also better athletes. WRs need to run precise routes, cut where the QB expects them to cut, and be at the spot the ball is being thrown to - when the ball arrives. Joey Getherall arrived on campus not only with speed but with DISCIPLINE. He knew his job and how to perform it on the college level from Day 1.

Same thing for HS star RBs, learning to block and pick up the blitz. Or HS stars that now have a lane assignment on the Kick Coverage Team. The freshman have to learn THAT job skills, know WHERE TO BE, maintain discipline, and execute properly.

Despite the flap over the Endzone INT in the Tulsa game, the game would have been over and Rees would have been in the Victory Formation had ND executed properly on kick coverage.

FYI, today's UND practice report is up on UND.com - focuses on the interior O-line.

This is like eatin' all the candy you want and never gettin' full!

The o-line looks beastly. Nuss, Watt, and Robinson are going to be mobile and fluid this year. Kelly is working on four centers. Cave and Golic this year are going to be head-and-shoulders above Cave and Wenger last year. TATE IS A MONSTER. Nick Martin has GREAT footwork he will probably never see center. The third and fourth tackles will be Heggie and Hegarty.

The above quote was unrelated to the one below. Kelly was merely commenting that Daniels has a lot of talent, but "his head is spinning" right now from trying to learn routes, terminology, etc.

This quote was in reference to whether certain freshman will be able to play a significant role on special teams this season-- specifically McDaniel, Daniels, and G. Atkinson. He basically said that there have been encouraging signs, but the usual inconsistency that comes with being freshman. Thus, he's going to give them a couple more days to see if they get settled, before turning to other options on ST.

I think Kelly would prefer to use underclassmen on ST, but we need serious improvements there, so he's not going to force the issue if they're not ready.

Anybody info on how they did today in the return game...especially the young guys?

idk about everyone else, but i like watching highlights of actual practice compared to position previews...even though usually the practice is pretty vanilla with what the media has access to

Warinner's comment about Trevor Robinson's consistent good play AND that he is "the leader out there now", was the highlight of my ear-to-the-ground so far. Why?? Maybe surprisingly, but I have been worried as to whether Robinson would step up or stay as a sort-of adequate-to-good guard. If Robinson's stepped it up to where he's the top of the group, then we are going to have a ball-cracker of an O-Line indeed. No wonder that Kelly said without hesitation that the strength of the offense was the line.

Warinner came off as a genius today. That is the first time I heard him speak in such a relaxed conversational setting. Seeing him in his natural setting was a real plus. Diaco is great, but so is Elston. Warinner fits the same mold. He doesn't miss a beat after Molner and Kelly.

II accidentally uploaded one of their "instant analysis" videos to Vimeo yesterday (8/10), which are supposed to be premium.

One important piece of info: Punter is supposedly very rough. Elston isn't happy.

I agree. He sounded confident and cool. Also, Trob looks to be in great shape and what about Bruce "The Huge" Heggie?? haha wow

Eric Hansen from South Bend Tribune and sbtv radio talked about this today. Lack of consistency from both Turk and Brindza. He sounded more impressed with Brindza though.

That video can be found here.

Lot of good stuff in there: Daniels looking impressive; McDaniel struggling with fielding punts; Niklas looking good at OLB (I really hope they're talking about Cat).

Not good for Turk; without consistency/ accuracy, he's not going to hold off the bigger-legged freshman for long.

Absolutely right. Eric mentioned that if both lack consistency, Brindza gives us best option as he will punt farther and with more hang time allowing for better kick coverage and field position battle.

Lawyers ruin everything.....
I think contractually it has to be associated with adjectives as - Gargantuan, Epic, Vast, and Legendary.

Exactly! From henceforth, all references to my chubby shall contain, but not be limited to, the following terms: Gargantuan, Epic, Vast, and Legendary.
