Since the start of fall camp, I'm much less concerned now about linebackers, and much more concerned now about the offensive line.

Since the start of fall camp, I'm much less concerned now about linebackers, and much more concerned now about the offensive line.

Considering ND did not have even a top 100 offensive line, that was my biggest concern heading into this fall and it remains my biggest concern. Specifically, they need to get the tackle positions to play at a high level and they need to run block more effectively or ND has a 0.0% chance of beating Georgia.

The skinny that I've heard on linebacker is basically that no one at the MIKE position has the instincts of Coney (who was one of the highest graded ILBs in all of college football last year) or the overall skill set +intangibles of Tranquill.

But JOK has All-American level potential and would've started last year had he not gotten hurt, so that's a large upgrade. All they have to do is get consistently mediocre play out of the ILBs to the point that they don't give up explosive running plays and the defense should be fine.

I thought the OL was getting rave reviews?

6’5”-6’6” Average Height
308.8lbs Average Weight
4 returning starters (4 in 3rd year or more)

.9835 5* RS JR Tommy Kraemer
.9614 4* RS JR Liam Eichenberg
.9605 4* JR Robert Hainsey
.9301 4* RS SO Aaron Banks
.8912 4* RS FR Jarrett Patterson

One of the highest rated recruiting ranked OLines they’ve ever had at ND, period. Georgia will be a huge test but I this line should be terrific this year. I’ve heard Tommy Kraemer looks more like the kid who they’ve wanted to see for years. Liam Eichenberg has been good and Aaron Banks is a House. I think they’ll be quite good this season. If they aren’t dominating Louisville and New Mexico in the first two weeks then there could be a problem but I think they’ll be fine

A couple of thoughts on why we shouldn't get too high to too low about a position group or the team unless of course, we are getting consistent reports they are doing badly.

1. When you go against each other day after day you can get a pretty good idea of what the other side is going to do and "know" the play before it's run.

2. There are times in practice when the D is told ahead of the snap what play the O is going to run. It's done to help the O work on quick recognition and technique. An old coach of mine did this all the time, just when the O figured it out, the coach would do something else to keep the O guessing.

I have no idea if this is the case with this clip, but I'm guessing there are some clips of the O burning the D.

Has anyone heard if Michael Young's collar bone will require surgery? I'd imagine it will but not all collar bones do.

I just think it is truly bizarre that the OL is not better given both the experience returning and recruiting rankings. Seems like it has been both ineffective coaching and poor evaluation during recruiting.

Purely from the practice reports I’ve read, the OL has been playing pretty well.

Me too. And even very good college offensive lines cannot simply push around good college D-lines. It's a myth. If they did, Wisconsin would be in the playoffs every year.

We now have good d-linemen, so there are going to be lots of no gains and negative plays.

Is someone saying they aren't better? I believe even Mike Frank said they look better but everyone wants to see it in a game. They are going against some of the best DL in CFB, we want to see them finally play an opponent.

Everything I've heard is Patterson is an upgrade in athleticism, Kraemer looks much improved, Eichenberg has taken a step (probably not AA level) and Banks and Hainsey have been very good.

FWIW, Sampson feels good about the three interior OL spots but thought that the tackles were getting abused too badly by Okwara and company.

Yep, Sampson specifically said there were multiple reps in a row where Eich and Hainsey couldn't even get a hand on Okwara. Hopefully that is just a foreshadowing of what a monster season Okwara is about to have

Considering that this will likely be the case with every OT tandem we play all season, I'm not alarmed.

Saw that, but still, would be very surprised if our O Line isn’t better than last year simply by virtue of more experience playing together. These are all talented guys.

Over Bilal? Wow. Not that Bilal is some world-beater but he’s pretty athletic himself and had a lot more experience.
I think it’d be surprising if we didn’t take a step back from last year at LB, given who we lose. But on balance I think they’ll be fine. There’s plenty of talent. Just a matter of fitting the right guys into the right spots.

My biggest concern at this point might be offensive skill positions. I know on paper we have a bunch of weapons but now we’ve lost Kmet and Young for awhile and who knows what’s going on with Austin. RB seems to ride pretty heavily on Jafar Armstrong for top-end talent. If something happens to him...
I have faith in Book, and maybe a solid QB is all you really need (I also think Claypool will have a monster year). But wouldn’t mind seeing a few more guys who can just outplay the defense Georgia, Michigan and USC will be able to throw at us.

.9605 4* JR Robert Hainsey
.9301 4* RS SO Aaron Banks
.8912 4* RS FR Jarrett Patterson

Not much different from our top OL in 2018:

.9614 4* Eichenberg
.9605 4* Hainsey
.9484 4* Alex Bars
.9301 4* Aaron Banks
.9123 4* Mustipher
.8738 3* Ruhland

5* Kraemer couldn't beat Ruhland for the RG position. And the production from that star-studded group ranked 106th in the nation last year (Georgia was 7th, Clemson 17th, etc.)

I can buy that Patterson is an upgrade at Center and that Kraemer is finally ready to produce as expected, which should give us a solid interior running game. But continued weakness at Tackle is going to be difficult to scheme around, and will almost assuredly ruin us against any elite defense like Georgia's.

OL remains my top concern. Hoping Quinn can prove me wrong.

Is there even a dog left in that dog house or has Javon McKinley taken up sole permanent residence?
Really would’ve thought he’d be getting a shot with Austin sidelined, AND now Young.

I don’t understand continued weakness regarding offense line...

Robert H was our top graded lineman last year and named captain

Liam is on all kinds of list as a top left tackle for next draft.

Let’s just see how the season plays out. I think the line will be fine

McKinley backs up Claypool at X. He's not playing Y where Young was lining up
