Not to bring race into this -- but did they fire any African-Americans other than Doug Glanville?

ND needs to hire this chick in some media capacity

She is a Michigan grad and homer.

Early ratings are decent for 'SC6' with Jemele Hill and Michael Smith

From two months ago... 2 weeks after it premiered. Seems to be doing ok. Not bad, not great.

It hasn't been doing good. Last numbers I saw had its ratings down 6% versus the old SportsCenter at 6 PM. Not talking about looking a year back, looking back a couple months at what was on right before they did the change.

Contrast that to SVP, whose later SportsCenter show is up considerably versus its predecessor. So if one guy can do a show and it's great and the ratings go up... it's not "fine" to have your ratings tank going to a new host. It's the same as saying Trevor Noah is doing "fine" on the Daily Show when he has been horrid. Things aren't measured in a vacuum.

Let me also add that I think some guys like Michael Smith and Bomani Jones that are hated on are very good. Very, very good. I think there's a lot of misplaced anger at them sometimes for being "different"... not in appearance, per se, but in how they talk and approach things. I've always thought Bomani Jones does amazing radio and is fantastic on Around the Horn... but a lot of people don't like him.

Michael Smith has carried Jemele Hill for a long time, and he simply can't do it for a huge production like SC6. It's not a podcast, and it's not His & Hers (which was a good program). Jemele Hill has always been a poor TV personality. She has talent as a writer, but even then has some troll-ish tendencies that have caused her problems.

Stephen A. Smith is everything people hate about "hot takes" bundled up in one person.

It's very reasonable for people to express anger towards people like Hill and Smith when they see very talented people like Stark, Werder, and Katz shown the door.

I can agree with this. I've always liked Michael Smith, and I remember liking him on Mike & Mike when he'd fill in when I used to watch it. He's always had a certain calmness when talking about players, stats, controversies, etc that I've liked.

I've always thought Bomani Jones does amazing radio and is fantastic on Around the Horn... but a lot of people don't like him.

I simply don't like people who lecture me on politics during what is supposed to be sports commentary. (Maybe if I were a liberal I wouldn't mind.) For example:

We get it, he doesn't like Chief Wahoo. Nobody in Cleveland cares, though, so why doesn't he shove off?

I don't think Bruce Jenner is a hero for cutting off his balls. Again, no interest in being lectured about that.

Finally, I don't think that Colin Kaepernick's protest is worth a damn. Nor do I think Black Lives Matter is worth a damn. Etc. So I won't subject myself to lectures about that, either, at least when I'm expecting to hear a sports discussion.

Jones is like a math professor who rants about politics all class. ESPN says that they want to be political, because sports and politics are connected, blah, blah, blah, but of course they fired Curt Schilling for being conservative. So they really just want to be liberal. That's why, even as ESPN slowly sinks, they'll probably be keeping Jones around until the bitter end.

I do agree that the last thing I want when looking for sport commentary is all this social upheaval stuff and politics...

Agree with this.

Additionally I didn't see anyone mention Dr Jerry Lee Punch also was let go. He has been around forever (30 years)....I remember him as a kid.

I honestly cannot remember the last time I sat down to watch anything on ESPN that wasn't live sports or Gameday. Even Gameday is getting harder to watch with less X's and O's and more of Desmond Howard's verbal diarrhea.

Great read above that summarizes a lot of the things discussed in this thread already.

ESPN is probably looking for a way to fire Beano Cook while they're at it.

Beano was fired in '87, but nobody told him, and he just keeps showing up.

You would think that he would notice the lack of paychecks, but I suppose he may have a government pension from his WW2 service. God bless him.

I figured he was getting the Bobby Bonilla contract treatment/retirement annuity.

I like Smith and thought Jones was good on PTI. Absolutely hate Jones' radio show.

Did think he's Cleveland Caucasian shirt was awesome though.

The problem with gameday is that they've begun to think too highly of themselves. Rather than talking about the actual football, the national landscape, and putting some focus on wherever they are that week, Gameday has just become three hours of them patting themselves on the back, laughing at their own inside jokes, and generally acting like bros. The most emphasis they place on "where" they are is the local food that gets made and handed to them on set. They don't actually care about the home stadium or crowd anymore.

The actual CFB content has suffered because Gameday has simply become a platform for the hosts and their personalities, rather than actually focusing on the day of games (you know.... Game Day).

Shit, the best, most insightful parts that still focus on the actual football are the bits where they go to Chris Falica for his picks against the spread, because he gives ACTUAL analysis and on-field reasoning for the picks he makes. He gives the best X's-and-O's on College Gameday, and he's on screen for a total of 3 minutes maybe.

The other part that provides the most analysis is Whitfield walking through the crowd while discussing QB's, but they've ruined even that unique perspective.

That's what I did for the first time this past year, and it is magical.

I was with my wife in the hospital last August for the birth of my son, and the EPL started while we were there. My son's first sporting event was watching Leicester vs Hull open the EPL season when he was two days old haha. Got hooked on Saturday morning "futbol before football" at that point.
