The NFL is auctioning off all of their pink used equipment from this month and claiming to donate all the proceeds to charity. Come to find out the owners take 50% to start and then by time everyone else takes their share they donate a whole 7% of each auction to the charity. If you want to help, donate straight.

We actually don't let our players wear pink gear for the reasons stated in your post. We bought pink athletic tape for the month of October and allow our players to be taped in pink, but everything else is off limits. We also started a fund and said if they really want to help, donate their money instead of lining NFL owners' pockets. We've raised about $500 in two years with this simple decision.

The University of Oregon football program typifies everything that is wrong with College Football. It is about style instead of substance, flash over accomplishment, and without the incredibly large checkbook of one Phil Knight, Oregon would still be nothing but the answer to a trivia question (on what college campus was the movie Animal House filmed?). Oregon has catered to the ego of athletes, perpetuating and arguably widening the sense of entitlement. I'm really interested to see how Oregon recruits, now that they have been busted purchasing the influence of Willie Lyles.....

What gets me is that breast cancer has one of the better survival rates for cancer. But there is more "awareness" events than cancers that have far higher death rates and way less funding, research, etc.

As someone that has lost two family members to pancreatic cancer, I find it annoying.

I'm just tired of companies whoring out the pink ribbon to boost profits while donating a very minuscule amount to research. The 5 hour energy commercials that I'm sure everyone has seen, **** me off the most. Those damn things cost 2.50 for a little bottle, and if you read the disclaimer they donate a whopping 5 cents per bottle. I know every little bit helps but for the money they'll make just from putting a pink ribbon on their bottle, I think 5 cents a bottle is a joke.

I lost my mom to pancreatic and liver cancer, my aunt (her sister) and my grandfather (her dad) to cancer. My daughter is a breast cancer survivor and inherited her cancer gene from me (prostate cancer). None of them are picnics for those who end up with cancer. Breast cancer just happened to have something who was effected by BC with a lot of marketing savvy decide to do something about it. I applaud their efforts.

I would like to see an organization come over all cancer efforts and have all donations funneled through them and distributed equally.

Hopefully none of this money is going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Biggest scam of a "charity" in existence.

It's not. It's going to the Yow Foundation that was made when the North Carolina State women's basketball coach died of breast cancer.

+1.

And not just higher death rates, but also kill more people per year, i.e. prostate cancer.

The whole pink thing in the NFL is a gimmick to sell ladies apparel, nothing more. It is the most insincere and unapologetic cash grab ever.

^This^ Oregon's pink helmets have jumped the shark. This is more about Oregon drawing attention to themselves than to the breast cancer cause.

Our family is doing a breast cancer walk towards the end of this month and raising money for the event. While it is a breast cancer walk, all the donations go to American Cancer Society as opposed to a breast cancer only fund.

In effect there is. It is called competent nationalized health care. It cost about $5,000 for a dermatologist to treat successfully an early case of melanoma, that is with nearly a 100 per cent survival rate. Both the cost savings and the survival rates would go through the roof! This would benefit all forms of cancer as better screening processes would be developed and afforded everyone. The only people that wouldn't come out better off initially, would be the various drug companies and hospitals who currently receive over $500,000 for interferon, CT scans and radioimmunotherapy for the more advanced cases that could to a greater degree have been averted with early detection, and more aggressive screening based on genetic history. With market direction they could nail down tremendous breakthroughs in many other areas where there are currently shortages of research capital.

Early detection is the root and basis for survival of most all cancers. The problem is very few people think that way. A checkup is just too inconvenient for most people. By the time they decide to see a doctor, many are in for the fight of their life and will probably lose. My mom was one of those.

It would be nice to see the NFL send all monies to the charity. Lord knows these rich billionaires can afford $200K - $300K a year. At the very least, only recoup the cost for purchasing the towels, shoes, etc. and donate the rest.

We had a young mother that had terminal cancer and contacted the Susan B Komas foundation for some help. We live in a small town in southern Illinois and she was turned down due to lack of funds. From what I was told our area was allocated so much money based on population. The funds for our area had been used up so she was turned away.

I am sure people in small towns are not aware of how these foundations work. if you have cancer and are in need of assistance then they should help you out despite where you live. Cancer knows no boundaries or geographical locations. It hurts women, children, and men of all ages in big cities or small towns.

May GOD bless all those and their families that have this horrific disease.

All charities have overhead. The ACS uses about 60 percent of donations to find a cure, the other 40 percent goes to things like the CEOs salary of about 2.5 million and to pay a massive employee retirement fund.

The numbers for early prevention, through screening and treatment are astronomical. There has been no advance in healthcare as significant since man moved indoors; not polio, not the plague, rabies, or distemper, nothing.

At ACS, 70 cents of the dollar is spent directly supporting the mission, which is lower than many non-profits and not all the 30 percent goes just to the CEO's salalry and employee retirement funds but they have a higher overhead with things like research facilities and equipment and supplies (wigs, prothetics, lab equipment, etc.) They still do a lot of good for cancer research, those suffering from cancer and their families. I used to be employed by them and I saw the good that they did daily. My only beef with them was they didn't fund a broader spectrum of cancers.

if you would like to fact check me, their I9 is available online for all the public to see.

Now the current large non-profit I work for is extremly proficient with roughly 93 cents on the dollar going towards the mission and is 97% volunteer run!

I had a dr appointment this week, and was talked into getting a flu shot...The dr spent about 10mins trying to convince me to get the flu shot.

One of his selling points was..."Do you know how many ppl die from from Breast cancer per year?" taking the bait, I said, "No". He tells me, "30,000. Do you how many ppl die from the flu every year?.....37,000"

I immediately thought, "why doesnt the NFL have a Influenza awareness month?"

it was probably not the desired thought process the dr was trying to get me into..
