I'm not saying they're all mentally ill, but a strong percentage of them are. Trans-gendered people are four times more likely than cis-gendered people to have mental health conditions. In a survey 40% of trans-gendered individuals said they've attempted suicide, which is 9 times the control rate.
As far as the two Associations I'm sure trans allies and pressure have sought to squelch the notion that their community suffers from mental illness, much in the way that 25 years ago Autogynephilia, or AGP, was once understood to be the driving force in male-to-female transsexual cases. It's a psychological disorder, and groups like WPATH had it removed from their standards of care in 2001 for a more fairy tale "born this way" ideology to avoid offending allies. Again, this wouldn't be the first time American doctors have caved to pressure. Circumcision was once strongly advised in the interest of hygiene and protection from STDs, but "child consent" bullies have pressured them to change their opinion to a more neutral stance.
