This would have been a great hire years ago. But he seems to hate how the game has gone. Soooo I don't know how to feel lol

They’re kinda screwed. Portal opens Jan 2nd so they need a coach by then and it seems Whittingham is the only coach that wants the job. I can’t imagine he’s going to help with retaining players that were on the fence especially from their recruiting class who I doubt knows Whittingham at all outside of a player or 2.

Good question. With all his success, there’s something going on behind the scenes that hasn’t come out yet.
He wanted a contract extension. Utah said no because they had already announced that DC Morgan Scalley was head coach in waiting.

Kinda sucks for all of us as this is likely the best case scenario for UM. I don't expect Whitt to last more than a few years given he's already 66, but that's a significant upgrade for a short term solution over Biff Poggi or what Stanford had to do last year with Frank Reich

Utah didn't want to fire him so they said he was "retiring" but as soon as the reports came out, Whittingham's team released reports that "he wasn't done coaching." The subtext there is that Utah wanted him gone but he wasn't ready to step down.
His decisions the last few years haven't been solid. He stuck with a very injured Cam Rising and haven't performed the way they have the previous 7 years. I'm sure they wanted fresh blood but not to fire him

Whittingham is not a hire that you plan to be there for 5+ years, but he should a great bridge to help get that program right.

Don't know that they wanted him gone in the sense that they were unhappy, but Scalley has been the coach in waiting for a few years now. They are fond of him and did not want him to become unsettled by having his promotion constantly delayed or pushed back.

That's exactly what they need, TBH. A three-year-guy who can clean things up, make a real break from the Harbaugh era, and hand that program off in better shape.

Last year was rough but they just went 10-2 and finished #15 in the country. They were a three-point road loss @BYU away from playing for the Big 12 championship. That's about as good as Utah can get.
But yes at some point the coach-in-waiting has to become the coach.
