According to reports, UNC asked him to retire/step down and he said no. Thus, the firing.

Welp...I've got nothin' then. Mack Brown is truly a dumbass who does not know when it's time to go. Word was they wanted him out at Texas sooner, but they didn't want it to be messy since he brought them the championship, so after a few years of pressure they finally got him to step down.

If they fired him they might have owed him more money the. If he stepped down.

Dan Mullen, ESPN analyst/former Florida coach

An ESPN analyst since being fired at Florida in 2021, Mullen has the reputation as one of the top offensive minds in coaching circles. He had success in the SEC at Mississippi State and with the Gators, keeping those programs in the mix for big-time bowl games with top-notch offenses.

Jon Sumrall, Tulane coach

A former SEC linebacker at Kentucky and a rising star who has coached Troy and Tulane to wins in 32 of their 38 games, it’s just a matter of time before Sumrall gets his first Power Four opportunity. If not for Boise State, the Green Wave would be in the driver’s seat for the Group of Five spot in the College Football Playoff. Given UNC’s consistent defensive struggles, Sumrall would be a great fit.

Jamey Chadwell, Liberty coach

Another popular name the last few seasons, Chadwell has a history in the Carolinas. During his time at Coastal Carolina, Chadwell racked up wins and carried that success to Liberty. He’s had 11 or more wins in three of the last five seasons.

Jeff Monken, Army coach

In a decade-plus at Army, Monken is one win shy of reaching 80 victories during his time with the Black Knights. A model of discipline and consistency, Monken would bring two things that UNC desperately needs to revamp its football program. His current Army team is among the top-25 teams in the nation.

Will Stein, Oregon offensive coordinator

Stein is in the spotlight as the offensive coordinator of the top squad in the country. A strong play caller who has proven capable of directing strong quarterbacks, including Dillion Gabriel this season, Stein could continue the recent success of the Tar Heels at the position.

Glenn Schumann, Georgia defensive coordinator

The Bulldogs’ primary defensive coordinator since 2022, Schumann has been able to learn under national-championship-winning coaches Nick Saban and Kirby Smart over the years at the top of the sport for more than a decade. If UNC wants a defensive-minded leader who has a history with big names, there’s not better choice than Schumann.

Barry Odom, UNLV coach

After a solid stint at Missouri, Odom is another coach known for fielding elite defenses. During his time at UNLV, the Rebels have won 18 of their 25 games. He was a .500 coach with the Tigers, so he may want another shot at leading a Power Four program.

Pete Golding, Ole Miss defensive coordinator

Any ties to Alabama will put you on the radar for a head coaching job, particularly if you were a successful defensive coordinator under Nick Saban. Pete Golding did that with the Crimson Tide before taking the same post at Ole Miss. Golding’s defensive prowess would be a welcomed addition in Chapel Hill.

Deion Sanders, Colorado coach

Coach Prime in Chapel Hill, rocking Jordan gear on the sidelines? It ain’t gonna happen, but it would bring plenty of intrigue and instantly boost the buzz around the Tar Heels. Even with all the off-the-field noise surrounding the Buffs, Sanders has revived the program and has it among the top teams in the Big 12 this season.

Kliff Kingsbury, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator

Would Kingsbury want to return to college football? Things weren’t rosy during his time as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, but he helped the Washington Commanders field one of the best offenses in the NFL. He had success at Texas Tech and would be a big-splash hire for the Heels.

Mack Brown had two tenures as HC there and won 107 games.

The next closest is 72 wins from 1978-87 by someone called Dick Crum, which is a horribly unfortunate name on multiple levels.
If he wanted the ability to resign, he shouldn't have pulled that stunt earlier in the year where it was unclear if he would resign midseason. Not just midseason, but before October! You can't be in a complete downspin with bad recruiting (77th on 247) and uncertainty about whether your HC actually wants to remain in the job. Especially since there's a decent chance UNC could be one of if not the top opening this cycle.

UNC's Mack Brown 'disappointed in me' after locker-room comments following James Madison loss

Inside Carolina, citing unnamed sources, reported Saturday night that Brown’s emotional postgame message included telling players he was quitting, a report that stirred at least some uncertainty about the immediate future of the program. Brown said Monday that players who thought he was quitting had misinterpreted his message and said players were eager to move forward.

With the imminent collapse of the ACC this hire is incredibly important to UNC. Letting Brown struggle another year or two might really be the difference between being getting P2 revenue or not.

I visited UNC yesterday for the first time. What an awesome campus/town/etc. Nice enough stadium. And, as we well know, there's so much high school talent in North Carolina and environs.
I realize they're a "basketball school" but if they ever hired the right coach and put some resources into football...

UCF coach Gus Malzahn resigned Saturday, and sources told ESPN that he will become the new offensive coordinator at Florida State.

Malzahn will be FSU's primary playcaller, sources said, a role previously held by coach Mike Norvell. This marks a distinct shift for Norvell, who has shaken up his staff in the wake of a 2-9 season that concludes Saturday night against Florida

If we end up looking at a new WR coach I’d call up Iowa States Noah Pauley 2 1,000 yard WR’s this year

I highly doubt Mike Brown is going anywhere after less than a year on the job but I suppose stranger things have happened.

I love me some strange.

Well not so much now.

But back in the day.

But I’d love it again if Brown hit the dusty trail.

Maybe, but my guess was UNC wanted an easy transition given Brown's history with the school, something like the Shaw step down from Stanford. I think schools are often open to letting a legend walk away with his head held high and pay him all or most of what he's due just so it's a clean transition. For whatever reason it sounds like Mack didn't want that, so he got fired. His choice I guess.

This is my pick for DB coach if Mickens accepts an HC/DC role elsewhere. Helluva DB developer and recruiter
That's an incredible downgrade for him when you consider he work as a DC at Mizzou and Illinois. Somebody looking for a DC snags him rather quickly in the weeks ahead.

Just hung up with a buddy I haven't talked to in a while and I was making fun of Ryan Day and OSU. And he said "you ND fans should be rooting for OSU as much as ND.....because you're not gonna keep the Ohio boy when OSU comes calling" I know we all have thought it, but now with OSU losing to UM 4 years in a row....if they come calling is there any real shot MF would stay at ND??

I think there is. But that's why we need to extend him before they and Day break up. Don't give them the chance to come calling. (Last week I said on this very board that we shouldn't extend Freeman until we're done playing this season, but then Ohio State embarassed themselves against Michigan. We should move now.)
