Riley is supposedly a Cowboys fan - Right? Why wouldn’t Cowboys go after Sean Peyton if they are going to make a change? Oh yeah… Jerry Jones won’t give up control
Yeah, I can't see Sean Peyton taking any job where he won't have control.

Any NFL GM looking at Lincoln Riley probably has to use Kliff Kingsbury as a cautionary tale.

It's a hard pass for me. OC, QB Coach? Sure, here's some money. NFL HC? I'm good.

Are you really going to compare a guy who had a losing record with Patrick Mahomes, was fired from his college job and was about to take a job as a college OC, with a guy who has led his team to multiple playoffs with multiple Heisman trophy winners and #1 draft picks and was lured away from his job with one of the largest contracts in college football history?

While Riley/Kingsbury isn't apples to oranges, pretty much the ONLY coach who made the jump from college to the pros successfully in the last 15-20 years is Harbaugh.

There's literally no one else.

Kingsbury was actually on an NFL roster as a player. He hadn't coached in the League prior to getting the Arizona job. Riley never played in the League and has never coached in it to this point. Same Big 12 Mike Leach coaching tree, which for college is great, but these two guys are essentially from very similar backgrounds. One has had more success as a college HC.

That success: Lincoln Riley has won a Covid Cotton Bowl. The College QB Whisperer act has been played a time or two before.

If I'm an NFL GM risking my ass on hiring him, I have a lot of questions during that interview, and the majority of them are going to center around what his defensive philosophy is and who he would consider having join the staff on that side of the ball.

There are dudes who have grinded as assistants in the NFL who deserve an opportunity well ahead of Kingsbury and Lincoln Riley. Kingsbury was a bad hire. Riley might be a better one on paper, but that's really about it.

Would Fickell go to Michigan if Hairball goes to the Colts?
The latter has to happen first & I think that’s just off-season fodder for the talking heads in the press. But, I‘d suspect Fickell would stay at Wisconsin.

So we're just gonna say he doesn't count? lol
I think the point of the list is coaches that began their head coaching career and went to the NFL are not successful. Pete started in the NFL so his situation is different. He doesn't fit the profile of the list.

Feels like Poodle is an obvious exception to a couple of different rules.

Sure seems like splitting hairs, but I see why Pete would have been left off the list with those parameters.
It really isn't splitting hairs. He had two NFL jobs, one college job, then another NFL job. If we're talking about guys that went from college to the NFL, that's not him. Pretty simple.

Poodle got the changes to get fired twice in the NFL, build a college powerhouse predicated off of committing violations, then bailed out when the NCAA came down and went back to the NFL.

Excuse my ignorance, but why is Pete nicknamed The Poodle?
The Boston area media nicknamed him that back when he was the coach of the Patriots. I don't know what the genesis of the nickname is, but it kind of stuck.
He was too California surfer boy for them. He was also everything Bill Parcells was not, and Kraft probably hired him for that very reason.

ND fans started calling him that again during the Weis Era. I have never stopped.

Jeff Saturday was 1-7 as interim Colts head coach. Point differential of -87.

“I have a very clear vision of how I can turn this football team around,” Saturday said, asked about his candidacy for the Colts’ head-coaching position, one he intends to interview for in the coming weeks.

If he landed the job, Saturday vowed, “there’s gonna be significant change … it’ll be a different direction, and a different vision — one that’s my own.”

It takes a certain type but there are college coaches who can succeed in the NFL (BK, for instance, has the right skill set). That said I don’t really see any reason why Lincoln Riley would be one of them. But it’d be fun if someone gives him a shot just to watch USC burn. So I’m rooting for him.
