She is also a female minority. Probably the best they could possibly do.

And I know Ty is a minority as well, but let's be honest, he's gonna be way to busy on that par 4 to give a **** about this committee.

Bingo. Let's just call it what it is....

Anytime a female (or her male friends) cliam she knows anything about sports...turns out to be as clueless as they come when it comes to sports knowledge.

But I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and see what happens

Bingo. Let's just call it what it is....

She is smarter and more capable than your mind is able to comprehend.

Also IDk if it was mentioned yet, but the Arkansas AD is head of the committed. So score one for the SEC again, yay!!!

FYI, it's not the size of te brain that determines intelligence, it's how deep the grooves are. Take it from a guy who's literally held a human brain in his hand.

Edit: I'm not a doctor, but it was an opportunity I had through a graduate program.

Stanford Daily | Condoleezza Rice, football recruiter

David Shaw on Rice:

Rice is not just a prominent but casual football supporter, however. According to Shaw, she has the mind of a coach.
Rice’s father was a football coach, and she joked that she was “supposed to be his star middle linebacker.” Although Rice’s gender may have derailed that plan, that didn’t stop her father from talking football with his only child.
Shaw said that he and Rice have drawn up some safety plays or considered ways to exploit the mismatches that Stanford’s tight ends have created in recent years.
“She loves that dynamic that we use to make big plays and also be big targets in the Red Zone,” Shaw said. “She hates prevent defenses. She loves defenses that are aggressive at the end of the game.”

GW: "what was the name of that brain?"

MF: "Abbie something.."

GW: "Abbie what?"

MF: "Abbie...it was...Abbie Normal...yes yes thats it...Abby Normal"

That's pretty awesome....I don't think the posters on here have seen Anchorman.

And I still don't care if she says she knows football. What does she know about the game that, literally, any diehard fan doesn't know?

Being the sec of state doesn't make you an expert on every subject. I'm sure she's going to be great at mediating...maybe that's what the commitee needs...but don't sell me this "she's smart, so she knows football" argument.

None of that qualifies her in my book.

I'm a big football fan. My uncle is a current high schoool coach at a powerhouse in San Antonio. I'm a sports fan. My dream job is to also, be commish one day. I have a different view point. And I have zero economic interest...

I just don't see it. I mean, everything you just listed could be the story of a ton of people.

She lives sports. Pretty sure she was who they were going to hire as commish of the NFL after Taglibou left, but she turned it down. She is more than qualified, and if for anything else, it helps ND.

I get all that. "She lives sports"........Serioulsy. Is that now the qualification to be either the commish or sit on this committee?

I watch a ton of Law and Order....I should start walking into court rooms and soliciting clients.

And don't get me wrong...I'm not saying she's going to do a bad job. Love Condi Rice and think she's a very smart lady.

But what does she know about football than anyone else on here doesn't know?

What does Ty Willingham know about football that anyone else on here doesn't know?

Judging by the history of the coaches' poll, I'm unconvinced that football expertise is more of a help than a hindrance.

Anyway, about half of the panel has no direct football experience that I am aware of.

Rice openly rooted for ND before Stanford became relevant. After Stanford became relevant, she talked about the conflict. Recently, she's definitely more pro-Stanford than pro-ND but don't doubt that she'd be in our corner vs the field.

Above all else, she is BY FAR the smartest and most capable person on that committee... so I see no grounds to object to her. How does playing the game or having experience in the broken system that is college football make you better suited to objectively select deserving teams?

I don't understand having people currently on university payrolls as part of the selection committee.

Exactly...this should be an emeritus gig for old coaches and ADs...

having active people begs the question of self interest, "deals", and fairness

Can you not say the same about Steve Weisberg? All he did was write about sports which is no different then the people over at Bleacher Report.

Her time serving as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State will go a long way in that room. Remember, she's not being asked to draw up X's and O's or build a program.

Exactly.

Look how many coaches either never played past HS or college or sucked as players in the NFL and are now coaching major colleges or pro teams.

Sometimes "experience" hinders rather than helps.

The way they are doing it now is the same way they do it with the basketball tournaments, but I'd argue that there is a huge difference between a 68 team tournament and a 4 team tournament. I agree that it is iffy to have current ADs on there.

Condoleeza will also be the only true intellectual on the committee. Since most of the selection has to do with data-analysis I think that should count for a lot.

While I don't disagree with the majority of what you said.....Really?

So someone with a lifetime of experience in college football, say, Tom Osborn (yes I know he's on the committee) doesn't make him better suited to select teams?

I totally disagree on that point. Does she give a 'fresh" perspective? Sure. But she's not more capable or any less bias than anyone else. Remember what "fan" is short for....We all have our biases.

But to each his own. And I'm not "objecting" to her, more just asking the question of why her?

Either way, I'm very intersted to see how it plays out.

I get what you're saying. Here's my thought process. I don't think experience as an athlete qualifies you whatsoever by its own right. I think your knowledge of the sport + cognitive abilities qualify you. For example, would I rather have Desmond Howard or Matt Hinton on the committee? Matt Hinton. Every time. Even though Desmond Howard won a Heisman and has been in the business of football his whole life, I'd rather have the smart, fair, and knowledgable guy.

So in short, I think playing experience and time in the business is irrelevant as long as you have football knowledge and an impressive track record of leadership/intelligence/fairness. You don't have to throw a spiral or coach a team... just logically decide which are the 4 most deserving teams of being included in a playoff.

I just heard on Mike and Mike the committee members:

Jeff Long – Current AD at Arkansas, had staffing positions at Rice, Duke, and NC State before joining Bo Schembechler at Michigan. Graduated from Ohio Wesleyan.

Good

Barry Alverez – Long time Wisconsin Badger coach and current AD, graduated from Nebraska, was assistant coach at Iowa and Notre Dame before becoming head coach at Wisconsin.

Good

Michael Gould – Lifetime Air Force ties, from undergrad all of the way to being the Super Intendant of their sports department.

Good

Pat Haden – Current USC AD, attended USC for school, former NBC broadcaster.

Good

Tom Jernstedt – Basically has been an Administrator for NCAA for 30 years.

Meh...would need to know more than the fact that he was a lifetime member of the dipshit club

Oliver Luck – Graduated from West Virginia and also Texas, current AD at West Virginia

Good

Archie Manning – Graduated from Mississippi, Worked for CBS as broadcaster, probably a strong SEC bias considering him and both Archie and Peyton played in SEC.

Good

Tom OsbornNebraska boy since birth. Former head coach for ~ 20 years. Stepped down from being Nebraska AD last year.

Good

Dan Radakovich – Has been an AD or assistant AD at South Carolina, LSU, Georgia, and now Clemson. Graduated from Miami.

Good

Condoleezza Rice – Alum from University of Denver and also Notre Dame. Made a living in politics and was the 66th Secretary of State.

Meh...smart lady, good communicator, good logic...but not someone I want to try and determine a winner in a statistical tie...

Mike Tranghese – Helped created the Big East and was commissioner until 2009.

Good

Steve Weisberg - Writer and reporter for USA Today sports for over 20 years, was named ’10 most powerful people in sports’ in 2007.

GONG...no press unless behind the press bio is some DI play, Coaching, or AD experience...bad call based on what I see

Ty Willingham – Graduated from Michigan State, former head coach at Stanford, Notre Dame, and Washington, with assistant jobs at MSU, Central Michigan, NC State, and Rice.

Meh...could do worse...could do better
