Very serious. I'm always serious.

But seriously, I bought my mother a record player and am looking for a variety of different vinyls to accompany the player.

The beauty of vinyls is going to record stores and picking out the ones you like. Buying them online almost defeats the purpose.

But just google it honestly. Amazon will have them. Any big retailers.

I would check out reviews for a local record shop and go to the best one. If youre looking for specific records amazon will give you the best selection but you can usually find good used records at a shop for a good price.

I agree that going to a record store is part of the experience.

I've never bought online, but Discogs is a pretty big one.

I am fond of trolling thrift stores and the like for records.

Also...if YOU are into music.
MAGNOLIA Record Club.
Monthly subscription service.

Vinyl is definitely back in a big way.

It's so awesome! I've been patiently waiting for sh!tty sound quality to make a return.

Those crazy hipsters got it right again!!!

But seriously, if you really want to FEEL the music rather than just listening to it, 8-track is where it's at.

Thanks all. I did go onto the site Discogs and found what I was looking for. Mom is a huge Elvis fan and they have quite a few on there for sale. Looking forward to giving this to her. Again, thanks to all. Looking forward to my kids listening to it too. I know they will give the , "What the hell is this?" look.

I prefer playing it through my fingers onto a guitar...through a proper vacuum tube amplifier myself...

You know the highest fidelity is achieved through vinyl, right? It is virtually lossless. More lossless than any lossless digital format. Assuming you aren't looking to play dubstep it will provide the highest sound quality possible (with the right player, can't go cheap on it). This is assuming the master wasn't created from a digital format, of course.

Yep, analog sound is terrific

I was not aware of that. Perhaps in the past I've just listened to crappy record players. Always seem to be popping and fuzzy.

That's very possible. The record player makes a huge difference. The record master and style of music can make an incredible difference as well. Some types of music just can't be played on a record. There are physical limitations to analog such as how deep a groove can be and how wide of a jump the needle can make. Packing too much play time onto a record can hurt the fidelity as well (thinner grooves equals lower quality).

I'm not a snob by any means, but I do like to get my easy listening (jazz, folk, etc.) on vinyl just for the warmth and clarity.

A shame I didn't see this sooner, we have a few hundred LPs here as well as a couple hundred 45's, mostly first releases. I used to visit the Salvation Army now and again, found some great deals on vinyl there over the years.

As an aside, we have a USB turntable that connects via USB to the PC and allows us to digitize records without losing the "album sound."

Not sure if serious....Amazon.

Sure wish I wasn't such an asshole here, haha. Ooops.

I recently have got into vinyl the past 3 months and have already upgrade my turntable. Does anyone have any other good websites other than Discogs, Ebay, Amazon, etc. to buy vinyl?

Discogs isn't terrible but I've only been able to get 1 steal off of the website - Foster The People's Torches for $9

Best place to buy vinyl IMO is Goodwill. It's all about timing, but I've picked up complete artist catalogs before in one swoop. Crazy cheap. A buddy turned me on to them several years ago. The SoB took me and was quick on the grab, and got every LZ album except Presence... You have to check them out closer than in other settings, but at a buck or two a pop, you can take a chance without concern.

Best place to buy is your local shops.

Especially if you're okay with used records. You can find some steals if you're willing to look.

However I did just buy an album off Amazon. Have used Discogs in the past.

Here is where I have shopped:
https://store.acousticsounds.com/
Amazon
Or if there is an artist go to their website or their record company's website for merchandise.

Thanks, reps. I'll check this out.

I don't mind buying new albums off of Discogs/Amazon but when it comes to used/vintage albums I'd like to buy in shop since you're basically paying double the price for shipping costs. It'd be nice to find a site that has low shipping costs. With everything closed now for the next 2+ weeks and being on home arrest, I'm getting an itchin' to buy now.

Slightly off subject but I'm scanning my favorite covers from my collection and having a vinyl wrap (like a car) made for one wall in my man cave.

What kind of turntables do you guys run? I still have my Yamaha GT2000L that I got for Christmas 1983. My Dad was a Yamaha Distributor and got this Japanese market only table at the CES as a gift from Yamaha.

I've had an old Sony for 20+ years and will never get rid of it. Had a Flu, sold it, bought an Orbit (I think that's the name), traded it away. Bought a cheap Ion to do some digitizing for family about 4 or 5 years ago and still have it. Doesn't look near as cool as the previous two, but sounds as good playing through my HK/Bose. I saw an AT that was crazy cool looking (wood, carbon) and gets good reviews, but don't feel like shelling out the $ for something that likely won't sound any better than the vintage Sony or cheap Ion.

Had a cheap Ion to start out. Lasted me not even 3 months before I upgraded everything. Ended up selling it to a lady in her 60s. She blew the dust off her records after 40 years in the attic and couldn't stop texting me for how happy she was to listen to her old albums.

Moved on to a Fluance and it sounds amazing. I use the phono connection through my Denon receiver and have ELAC bookshelf speakers. Next purchase will be a center speaker.

I have an older Miracord. Was looking to upgrade and my father in law was renting from a family member who said anything in there was his. Apparently they liked to party and had it in a closet it in near perfect condition. Changed out the stylus and works great.
