Personally, I think the tradition and facilities used by legends is what make ND appealing. Anyone can build this kind of crap. Maybe making the facilities a little more functional is needed. I suppose we'll be buying NFTs soon to update the Gug.

View attachment 3050524
Tradition is great. And the facilities can still be given a classic feel (frankly that's a plus) but the facilities need to be state of the art. Would i personally care as a recruit? No. If Notre Dame batted their eyelashes at me I'd be there. But we are recruiting kids who didn't grow up ND fans. We need to appeal to them.

Best thing Driskell has ever written. Spot on.
Would love to know more about what he alluded to in his mailbag pod last week. Said something along the lines of he has only revealed ~10% of what BK has done that irks him and that if he ever mentioned some of the rest it would end him. Says he won't do that because it would be detrimental to some players and the school as well. I know we have to take everything Driskell says with a grain of salt, but damn would that be a juicy read lol

Anyone see a pic of BK recently? My Lord he should have given up gumbo for Lent. Yuge.
After I moved to Louisiana, it wasn't necessarily the cooking (although that was part of it) where I gained a lot of weight at first, it was the amount of very casual drinking in so many situations. Even if you're not drinking to excess in a sitting, it was something I really had to re-learn how to do in moderation because it's different down here in a way I hadn't experienced living in Ohio or NY.

To be fair BK is Irish Catholic from Boston. We know of constant casual drinking at any and all occasions.

It is amazing how even in this day and age they can keep this stuff wrapped up, but I'm telling you, I would not doubt for a second that there is more dirt out there than anyone could realize. As much as Driskell is a douche, I'm willing to bet there is plenty of substance to whatever he's alluding to regardless of whether he's received it first or second hand. Opposing fanbases and trolls love to play a couple of cards on Kelly, mostly ones that involved two very tragic deaths, but I have zero doubt based on my previous experience that there are more than enough buried secrets about his time at ND to go around.

Man, I'm no fan of Driskell but that was some scorched earth writing there lol. Good stuff.
100% agreed. That article said a lot of things we've said over the years and certainly in hindsight.

I gave Kelly a lot of credit for how he reset the program hiring Elko and Long, then Lea and Freeman, but even with that I had a sense for these last few years that he was just sort of resigned to whatever the limitations of being at ND were and he wasn't going to try to rise above them any longer.

Marcus Freeman, doesn't seem to see limitations, he sees opportunity. That's the guy we want.

Kudos to Driskell for putting this out there. It needed to be said.

To follow up with this, O’Malley and Prister on the II pod this week were talking about Kyle Rudolph recently being at practice/speaking to the team. They made a quick comment that not only would Rudolph have declined an invite by Kelly to speak, but that he wouldn’t even been back at practice at all.

So those with inside information, was Kelly a prick as a coach? Or is this simply he was never involved closely with the players and didn’t know the team on a personal level pre-2017?

I don't think there's any argument that BK is a prick. We can all fully respect his work as a coach and I'd call him top 5 or top 10 in college football, and at the same time say I'd never want to have a beer or play 18 with the guy.

The idea that former players wanted no part in coming back says a great deal to me about the man first and coach second. These aren't pros who are under the glare of Parcells or Belichick. These are college kids. So the idea that the Kelly Era ND players wouldn't come back if he invited them is a major red flag and in hindsight I wish it's something I would have known sooner as a fan.

well if remember Kelly when he started at ND bagged on players he saw as loyal to Charlie Weis as not being "his guys". Makes sense a lot of guys of that era didnt like BK

I can say with confidence that the ‘10-‘12 guys did not respect him and thought he was a bad coach. Those are the guys I actually overlapped with in school and have stories.

I can also say that a lot of the ‘13-‘16 guys had problems with him being distant and they had basically no relationship with him whatsoever unless they were one of a handful of stars. The general consensus was that he did not give a shit about players or what they wanted and made no time for anyone except a handful of stars (and even they had limited interaction). I don’t have any first hand stories though.

I heard that he did better in terms of player relationships from ‘17-‘21 but he was probably faking it. I don’t think he’s an authentic/genuine guy. I think Freeman is very authentic and I really, really hope he knows how to be a HC because he checks every other box.

Most of the negative stories I have heard are from staff/admins rather than players. Dude treated people “below” him like dirt, unless you were a coach. He generally treated his coaches well and had their backs.

I heard from a very reliable source (i.e. an ND professor) that Troy Niklas hated Kelly. He said he was fake and repeated a lot of empty platitudes. That was a strong reason why Niklas left ND early.

But to Kelly's credit, I witnessed in person the 2010 game in the Coliseum where ND finally broke the streak against USC. I also made it about three steps out of the bleachers and on the field before being escorted back to the ND student section.

Kelly is better at press conferences than Marcus Freeman. Freeman talks a bit of fluff if you ask me.
Those two sentences are contradictory. "Being good at press conferences" is generally the art of conversing with journalists without conveying any real information. Kelly was certainly good at the political aspects of the job, but there was an insincerity there that made his platitudes grating to listen to for long. Freeman cares way more than Kelly ever did, so his "fluff" is just more fun to listen to. You're not really learning anything from either coach.

I had a family member who worked for the team from 17-21, who echoed a lot of the things said on here. They mentioned some things that he would do before practice that didn’t surprise me one bit, but is not out there in the open so I won’t say. But they never had a bad 1 on 1 experience with Kelly, just that he was a dick in general, along with chip long. The convos between chip/bk/Rees during the games sounded pretty brutal, to put it nicely.

And Freeman is better at the pre-game pep talk. Kelly sounds like he's trying to get nursing home patients to switch to a different Medicare Managed Care plan.

Give me the guy who gets the players to run through the wall.

Rees is a dick by all the rumours I am hearing and also a useless QB coach which is verifiable. Oh wait he is still at ND so we have to give it a minute before we start saying stupid things about him endlessly.

I’m not sure how to take this, but I don’t feel like it’s sour grapes at all to say BK was/is a prick. I’ve been saying it since year one and nothing he has done has made me think otherwise. In the same breath I have said that I appreciate what he has done/did for us as a coach (this is an addendum I’ve only added in the last couple of years).
I watched wayyyy too many pre game and post game press conferences over the years, coupled of course by the podcasts and articles that spoke to what the journalist were hearing or seeing to ever come away with a different opinion of him. He’s more than one thing, but he certainly is a prick.
