We need so new blood on this coach staff. I loved the emotion from Kelly last night. That’s the kelly I really liked. He was all over Polian for that special teams issue. And then the BS holding calling he was all over that official.

But we need the following: Lyght replaced the DB’s are lost. You can’t tell me these players with their speed keep getting burnt. It falls back in coaching.

Long- way to inconsistent. Last night a good game plan the last 2 weeks not so much. But I think it’s time to move Quinn from o line coach. He can recruit but he is at best a very average coach.

Noticeably more athletic. Hits holes immediatly (Jones isnt bad at that, Jamir is just better), stays incredibly low, always falls forward for an extra yard, runs extremely hard (not that Jones doesn't, but Smith moreso).

I don't even think it's a question Smith is our best RUNNER.

I agree. Maybe not the most complete, yet, but the most explosive runner.

IDK what to make of Quinn but I’d be surprised if Lyght and Polian are here next year. Long probably moves on, too.

Honestly, I think it will be an uphill battle if he loses even one more (that isn't the bowl game). This is a very real possibility. We all can sense that a change is stirring, so I am sure he is feeling the heat. I respect the fact that he is still protecting his guys and even encouraging Book. It isn't easy for us fans who are curious to see PJ play, but I'm sure it's even harder for a coach to stick with a guy that nearly everyone thinks should be replaced. Essentially, he's rolling with his QB 'til the end.

He isn't going anywhere at 9-3 this season unless he retires or takes another job. Especially after going 12-0 last year.

Right on cue regarding Jamir Smith/Tony Jones.

ISD member (not me) asked Mike this morning.

Mike's response:

"Been saying since fall, Jahmir Smith is the best pure RB on the roster.

ND staff is too worried about mistakes. Let the most talented play. They just might make some plays for you."

What is the knock on Todd Lyght? He is brought in by far the best secondary talent we have had in awhile. It’s hard as hell in today’s game to play cornerback because of how talented WRs are and how complex offenses are. Julian Love was an impressive player under Lyght. Crawford has been solid when he has been healthy. Pride took a step back this year but hasn’t been bad the past few games. You basing it on Donte Vaughn? Vaughn looks half lazy out there but when he actually plays sometimes, he isn’t bad. Overall, the secondary this year has played pretty well. Georgia and Michigan might be the exception but Michigan was a horrible game for the entire defense and Fromm was making very tough throws in that game that any DB would have a tough time defending

No, it wouldn't. I'm just stating that I don't think it will be because he wants that. I think he's fatigued but his comments about putting in work suggest that he is still coaching and values his experience at ND.
Not that I necessarily disagree with you, but honestly what else is he supposed to say?

He can’t recruit. Other than Love we have had an very average secondary. They don’t get their heads turned around. Crawford was a decent recruit who unfortunately just can’t stay healthy.

Brian Kelly is the best, idk why this thread even needed to be created. This program is exactly where it should be, The Camping World Bowl. Smashing the Duke Blue Devils is what we should strive for in Year 10, and that mission was accomplished. We won, guys. All is well.

I just feel like we've been stuck in neutral for years, like right on the brink of getting over the hill. Then when I think there's a chance that they've turned the corner, they get embarrassed on the national stage. Just once, I'd like to have a come back when someone says that ND can't win the big game, that we choke when it matters, that we will never win a Natty. Idk, just sitting around expecting something new out of Brian Kelly, after a massive 10 year sample size, seems delusional. I just lean towards making a change, I'm willing to take the gamble if it means a chance to finally get over that hump.

There also teaching a lot of DBs not to turn their heads these days. There told to watch the WRs eyes and disrupt that way.

Hmm, let’s log on to good old IrishEnvy and see how happy the fans are with our blowout road win against a likely bowl team to move to 29-6 in our last 35, by far the best 3-year stretch in my 25-year lifetime.

Oh right, this place has turned into NDNation. #FireKelly.

Is it not possible to be both happy with the road win but still see the flaws that reside in scheme and coaching?

Lea, once again, handed the game on a silver platter to the offense. If we had a truly elite offense, ND would have hung 60 with how piss poor Duke's offense was. But the running game was boom or bust and the passing game was still meh. Nothing changed with this game other than they chose to run Book more.

Whenever Lea leaves, we're all going to look back at how many warts Lea covered up for the seriously flawed BK.

Does everyone really think it's a coincidence this 3 year run that's 29-3 with three possible 10+ win seasons, all during the 3 years Elko/Lea were here?

Give BK a top 20 assistant and he's an 8-4 coach. He currently has a top 5.

Okay. And that proves what? .

Pretty simple point that your statement was wrong. You complained that ND doesn’t have an elite offense since they only scored 37 and you felt they should have hung 60 on them and he’s stating that Bama with an elite offense only scored 42 and they were at home. Not saying ND has an elite offense but they did fine.

Bama was not at home, neutral site game. But that isn't the point. The point is that this type of thinking is a crappy barometer and a nonsensical argument.

But, if we say, well, Bama did this against Duke, so all is well. Then what do we have to say about the VT game (Since Duke and their mighty offense rolled them)? Or the Lville game (Miami just torched them)? Or the Michigan game (Wisconsin best offense in the country!!)?

It's not that ND performed poorly. It's that there is still gobs of evidence that they missed numerous (and significant) opportunities once again!

We're all aware of the flaws. We all watch every week. But also it's college football. Just about every team is flawed and inconsistent and that's what makes it interesting. (Also interesting: The transitive property being completely irrelevant because we're talking about a bunch of 21 year-olds and college football teams can change dramatically over the course of a season.)

What rubbed me wrong, anyway, was certain posters coming on here in the immediate aftermath of the game and basically saying "Whatever. Duke's crap. Fire Kelly." If that's your attitude you'll never be happy and maybe you should go watch the Patriots or something.

I get that too. Completely rational take.

The Duke game doesn't change anything in the big picture. I was happy with the way the defense performed and I was happy for Book that he was able to enjoy the game (at least it appeared that he did).
