Since it's apparently inappropriate to directly point out a specific person's actions, lets talk about this generally.

Is blasphemy (ie using the lords name in vein) worthy of neg reps or shunning from the site? In my opinion, this board has no rules regarding this type of language. While neg reps are entirely subjective, where do we draw the line? If someone from another fanbase comes, is it ok to suddenly blast them and/or neg rep them despite them being respectful? It has become an apparent problem that there is someone making a religious mission of moderating anything they deem not to their religious standards. How do we handle this?

Does a mod talk to him?

Do we neg rep back?

Do they get their way and IE become a stale place where we only get to communicate in a manner that would be appropriate in a church setting?

I don't know. I have had to deal with this, as many of you have. In fact, if you get a neg rep like this, look at the comments on that person's board. This has been an ongoing problem and it will come to a head eventually. If this is a board where I have to watch my language to the point that simply saying "Jesus ____" gets me in trouble, then i'll post elsewhere.

This isn't a Democracy. If we're given a vote, by Phammer and the mods, then that's great. But they don't owe us one.

There are no rules on reps/neg reps. People should be able to dish them out as they see fit. I'm very judicious with mine and usually reserve it for obvious trolling or an egregious amount of suckitude in a post.

BGIF once gave me a neg rep for going off topic in a thread. I respect that. Harsh, but fair.

Where did I say that?

Btw, we do have a vote. We vote by participation. If we are going to be harassed every time we say something that doesn't fit another posters sensitivities, well... there are a ton of other ND boards.

Maybe it isn't a big deal though. As Hog said, maybe we just continue to deal with this person's absurd harassment and move on. But since the mods have already had to deal with people getting pissed about this twice, that certainly points toward this being a worthy discussion.

Personally I have only neg repped once, I believe, in the entire time I've been here and that was a troll from another board. Now while I say I am no big fan of cursing, I just ignore words I don't like and move on. I am not the judge of everyone's language on this site. Nor anything else for that matter. If I really find what you say habitually annoying (and that is usually more than swearing but vain douchebaggery) I will block you. Its easy to take care of.

I gave this some thought when I got neg repped for violating the Third Commandment. I concluded that there was nothing to do about it.

It seems to me that the general custom and practice on IE is to reserve neg reps for really objectionable posts rising to the level of serious disruptions or blatant fabrications. IMO cursing does not meet that standard.

But I think a poster should be able to neg rep whatever and whoever he wants. The neg-repped poster can then respond in kind (although that would be stooping to his level), call out the neg-repper publicly for giving a neg-rep under circumstances that puts him outside the bounds of our general custom and practice, or, to the extent the neg-repping reaches the level of an all-out assault on the cursing poster's reputation level, i.e. the level of harassment, involve a mod.

But as long as I'm just receiving an isolated neg rep here or there, I don't really care. Freedom of speech and all that. I have the right to curse and he has the right to express displeasure. I may find his mode of expressing displeasure offensive, but freedom of speech means "protecting the thought that we hate."

We should be able to challenge a neg rep to an "arbitrator" and try to get the neg rep expunged from our IE record.

The only time I neg repped was the one guy that was pissed off that Kelly got hired, I can't even remember his name. He kept changing his name just to troll. If I could take back the neg rep, I would. I don't think it was right of me, nor others, to neg because of a difference of opinion, no matter how stupid that opinion may be.

Same.

I usually only give neg reps for attacking another poster. I also like the idea of calling the person out if they give you a questionable neg rep but call them out in the thread it happened, don't create a thread just to attack them.

I've been neg repped about a dozen times, probably about 10 of those from the same 2 posters.

I usually think their PAB's and move on, lol. After all, our rep points/power aren't public, and if I didn't see the 'red' icon, I wouldn't even realize I was neg repped.

Once you get past 'giving advice to Kelly', there's nothing to be gained.

I love Tupac, but thought The Seven Day Theory was incomplete. Not exactly his fault, I suppose, but probably keeps the album out of the top-5 of all time.

As a track though? So legit. Gets me fired up.

Do people care that much about repping, from anonymous dudes, in the first place?

This.

I used to care about reps but very recently decided it was childish and pointless to worry about it, especially because others (besides mods) can't even see your reps.

I will continue to dish them out as I see fit, but I don't see the point in getting worked up about this.

Edit: to clarify...I do enjoy getting repped (most humans enjoy being praised). I'm just not going to get annoyed when someone neg reps me.

As Lax said, there are no rules regarding neg reps. Nor should there be. Emcee's analogy to the First Amendment is apt. It would not bode well for the quality of discourse around here if the "government" of IE started regulating which opinions can and cannot be praised or condemned privately.

That said, the general convention is that neg reps are rarely employed. If you choose to give one, be prepared to defend it publicly.

While there are no rules against arbitrary neg repping, there are rules against ad hominem attacks. Which is why threads started about a specific member get scrutinized pretty heavily. Though we mods may have been a bit too quick on the trigger with some of the threads tangential to this issue, since the rules related to this topic are not well-defined.

AFAIK, Jason hasn't laid down any specific rules about blasphemy. But we do utilize a profanity filter, and "respect for others" is the general rule of thumb around here. Many of our members are religious, and find explicit violations of the 3rd commandment to be offensive. So if you're tempted to type "goddammit", ask yourself if a simple "dammit" or "dadgummit" might suffice. If you're tempted to invoke "Jesus Christ", try instead swearing to "Cheese 'n Rice". Or don't, and take any neg reps that come your way.

Tone and context are important as well. We're pretty tolerant of those who judiciously circumvent the profanity filter, but if you post a profanity-laced tirade, you'll probably get infracted for it. Just use your best judgment and try to be respectful of others.

It took me at least a minute. I kept reading it as 'Aflac'. Quit using teenage girl lingo, sheesh.

It means you've received 307,496 Reputation Points, and when you rep someone else, they receive 3,168. Typing that out brought this to mind:
