Since it's apparently inappropriate to directly point out a specific person's actions, lets talk about this generally.

Is blasphemy (ie using the lords name in vein) worthy of neg reps or shunning from the site? In my opinion, this board has no rules regarding this type of language. While neg reps are entirely subjective, where do we draw the line? If someone from another fanbase comes, is it ok to suddenly blast them and/or neg rep them despite them being respectful? It has become an apparent problem that there is someone making a religious mission of moderating anything they deem not to their religious standards. How do we handle this?

Does a mod talk to him?

Do we neg rep back?

Do they get their way and IE become a stale place where we only get to communicate in a manner that would be appropriate in a church setting?

I don't know. I have had to deal with this, as many of you have. In fact, if you get a neg rep like this, look at the comments on that person's board. This has been an ongoing problem and it will come to a head eventually. If this is a board where I have to watch my language to the point that simply saying "Jesus ____" gets me in trouble, then i'll post elsewhere.

I respect all poster's rights - according to the usage agreement on this site - to post whatever they want. Using the Lord's name in vain to me is something I would rather not do, or read out here. With that said, I have a few options. I can place that person on my ignore list, I could neg rep them, or I could simply choose not to participate on this forum all together.

I don't believe I have ever neg repped anyone out here. I don't have anyone on my ignore list, and I am still posting out here.

My Pastor always says this when he hears the phrase. If you can damn Him, then I can praise Him. To each his own.

May I make a suggestion? In my house we use vegetable names and silly words in the place of swear words. I definitely avoid using words which are blasphemous to many posters when I can help it.

So when my wife is driving me crazy I tell her to stop being a cotton headed ninnymuggins and to cheese off.

I love Tupac, but thought The Seven Day Theory was incomplete. Not exactly his fault, I suppose, but probably keeps the album out of the top-5 of all time.

As a track though? So legit. Gets me fired up.

Incredible. This is way over people's heads. Way to sneak in a post of the year candidate before 31 Dec.

It's a neg rep. The best you can do is call it out as it happens and let the community either back you up or not. I think neg repping for blasphemy is toolish, but what're you gonna do.

My first neg rep was Wooly. Mother f*cker tried to green rep me and screwed it up. ...but don't worry I don't hold a grudge....

I'm down with blasphemy.

I'm not down for neg repping blasphemy.

I agree that it's pretty "toolish", as greyhammer90 so eloquently put it. I'd even go as far as calling it infantile.

I took my medication today, so I won't go on a rant or post a 5000 word passive aggressive post full of blasphemy just because I know some people won't like it.

But I for one, don't have a positive or negative opinion on it.

Now the language filter...I am ok with that thing being turned on. Seeing 100000 F-bombs is far more offensive to most people than someone saying "god damn" or "Jesus Christ" on the interwebs.

My defense in HS was that it was a lowercase g and thus I was damning someone else's bullshit pagan god. So it's always "god damnit" from me.

I didn't know people actually cared about reps that much...

I've given (hey kmoose!) and received (cheese and rice OMM!) only two neg reps during my time on this site. I laughed when I got mine.

I try not to use blasphemy but I've definitely thrown outs some J's, JC's, and GD's. I tend to gravitate to fuck, shit, and dammit tho.

However, I do find it interesting that we closed that thread yet left it up for everyone to catch up on when they get home from work.

I don't get why you'd get so upset by it. Who freaking cares. If his neg reps are enough to get you banned or something, you've got some reputation problems that aren't specifically his to blame. If you can't handle someone disagreeing with your post, HAH welcome to the internet.

I rarely use neg reps and don't have anyone ignored but a few people on here have really tempted me to utilize the ignore feature.

So I'm interested in hearing others on this but I've never understood "goddamnit" to be damning God but more as a request for God to damn something, namely 'it.' Whether or not that's my place to ask such a thing is another conversation but I've certainly never said it meaning that God can take a hike nor have I ever assumed that's what someone else is saying.

Guess it is all in the context of how it's said. And that would be up to the person saying it I guess. I truly believe most people use the term without really referencing anything... more of a habit with cursing than anything.

That's kind of what wooly is complaining about though. One poster is pretty consistently not being able to handle that other people don't agree with his lifestyle choice. He's decided that he needs to play the morality police for the board. As a result, he's punishing any post that doesn't fall in line with what he thinks is right, regardless of the quality of the post. Idk, just doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the board.

Also, I find the "who freaking cares this is just the internet" to be an unconvincing argument coming from a mod. The fact that mods even exist shows that there is some form of community, discussion, and etiquette that needs to be protected from posters that actively detract. Otherwise, don't clean up the Brent thread because "who freaking cares that it's off topic this is the internet lolz"

I always understood it the way you said. That phrase you quoted made zero sense to me too lol. If you wanted to damn god you'd say ... (spolier alert) "damn god". god damnit I always understood to be actively pleading with the lord to damn something.

My problem is that he doesn't leave a reason for the neg. You don't have to leave a comment for positive reps but neg reps require something. He undermines that by just putting a period. This post got negged with no explanation.

Then let us pray

Edit: a neg rep? Lighten up fellas

If someone finds it offensive then they could easily explain what bothers them and perhaps I would agree. But just negging it during the Stanford game is toolish.

Like I said earlier, I don't really care. If someone generally does this I just call them out by name in the thread and let them explain themselves. This board generally is pretty hard on neg reppers so its a high standard of review lol. But yeah it doesn't really irk me very much. However, I will defend to the death Wooly's right to call out a guy who's acting like a douchebag.

I believe he was speaking about Tommy's comment in post #32.
