Is it possible he took the interview just to get the experience of interviewing for an NFL head coaching job? I just don't see him leaving after getting so close.

I find it amazing that nobody is --even for a second-- allowing themselves to believe that BK has NFL aspirations.

Being a head coach at an NFL program represents being at the pinnacle of your profession. NFL coaches, on aggregate, make almost twice as much as FBS coaches, not to mention the extra freedoms and perks that come with it.

If Kelly goes to the NFL and fails, there will be 120 FBS coaching positions waiting for him when he gets back. On the other hand, Kelly's NFL stock may never be higher than it's right now.

I just think it's a bit arrogant of us as a fan base to think that there's nothing better out there, and that this is just some big charade in order to get a bigger raise and extension at ND.

Word is pay for his assistants is a big issue.

Irish Illustrated (@NDatRivals) tweeted at 1:34 PM on Thu, Jan 10, 2013:
For all the talk about Brian Kelly's salary, hearing pay for assistants could be just as significant in these negotiations.

This is all starting to make sense

I'm with you guys. Kelly knows that the difference between 2011 and 2012 is that he and all his assistants were on the exact same page in 2012 ... not so in 2011. I think Kelly figures the best way to guarantee that ND will keep winning is for him to keep this excellent staff intact for as long as possible.

Winning 10 at Notre Dame probably won't be enough, pretty much from now on for Brian Kelly. Ask Weis or Willingham. The bar has been set.

But in the NFL, Kelly also knows that 10 wins gets you into the playoffs -- pretty much every year.

And how many wins did Ty have in hist last two years at ND (11 combined)? How about Charlie in his last two (3, 7, 6)? If BK wins 10 games a year, he'll be at ND as long as he wants.

The bolded section in my post was a quote from the article...my response to that was:

Maybe Dennis Dodd and BK should ask Lovie Smith if 10 wins is enough in the NFL.

Woah, let's not take sports too seriously. Every ND fan should be completely arrogant about ND and should not have to appologize for it. That's what sports are for.

I completely agree with you, though, that he is really looking at this job. He is an "owe-it-to-myself"/"you-have-to-at-least-listen" kind of guy. He tells his assistants that they are allowed to interview for head coaching jobs. I love Kelly, but I don't see him as loyal to his job, and I don't think we ND fans have given him such an incredible welcome that he would see his position as something other than a really great/cool job.

That said, I think he ultimate intention is to draw a lot of attention to his skillset and get himself and his assisstants raises. In other words, I don't think he wants to bolt, and no one is going to make him an offer he can't refuse.

I do not believe he is going anywhere. I concur with most on here that this is strategy to get what he wants from the University.

I do hope he is taking some time during this vacation to contact people like Spurrier and Saban and discuss the differences in coaching in college and NFL. Spurrier has a lot to say about the demands on your time and lifestyle that the NFL takes from you. BK seems to like his family and enjoy the time he gets to spend with them. He mentioned on the coaches roundtable that his parents and his in-laws have moved to SB. I just don't see him as being an NFL guy right now.

As far as the timing goes, not much can be done about that. The NFL wouldn't just wait till after NSD to hire coaches - they need to act now.

The fact that this is the dead time for contacting recruits works in our favor. This will all be settled before any coaches can get in the ears of commits and start the "Kelly is moving on" conversation with them. Kelly will be signed to a long term contract and the recruits will be fine.

It was kinda fun to watch the implosion though.

Like most of you I have no idea what BK intends to do. I have been reading here and on some Eagle web sites. Been an Eagles fan for about as long as I have an Irish fan. The general opinion of Eagle nation is mixed. I had rather him stayed at ND and see the Eagles hire a coach with NFL experience. I know I said that earlier.

One other thing being talked about in EAGLES sites is how BK has a track record for job changing without much regard for his present employer or athletes. Personally, I think whete there is smoke there is fire. Hope I am wrong.

Heard they were interviewing Lovie Smith too. That would make more sense to me.

Apparently, Coach Brian Kelly is in talks with the Canadian Football League.

Earlier this morning, he met with the Lingerie Football League.

That is all.

It's the LEGENDS FOOTBALL LEAGUE now bro...you're welcome ;) Sources say the winner gets free food at Legends for a year....good deal imo

Did you even read any of the recruits tweets that were posted in this thread?

Or is it just a natural occurrence for you to talk out of your ***?

AA just committed to UF....

What was that again??? I"m talking outta MY A$$??? Again, run along.

BK talking to the Eagles DOES have an effect on ND's recruiting. No matter how much you blowhards think it wont.

Great point. That's probably why Oregon and 'Bama have such a hard time recruiting top players. Speculation that one's coach is leaving for the NFL is a terrible thing!1one

I'm sorry, Bogs, but this is just naive. That's not how the world works.

And if the job gets filled in the next month? What sort of leverage does BK have then?

As the last 20 years of mediocrity confirmed, coaching is everything. We finally have the right coach, and our football program is making more money than ever for the university. BK is something like the 25th highest paid CFB coach, which is embarrassing for us. He deserves a cut of the huge profits he's generated for the school, and this is how one goes about getting it.

Oregon currently has the 26th rated class, I fully believe this is as a result of all this NFL talk. Saban took his shot and got his *** handed to him and came back. I believe he will not go back.

The thing that bothers me is it looks like Kelly is jumping at the first opportunity he receives. No one was knocking on his door the alst two 8-5 years but the minute he has a good year he's gone. Only way it looks is that he came to ND to get to the NFL. Bottom Line!

For Kelly and Anzalone:

If you don't like Notre Dame, then you can get out!

You went back and edited your post after the news was broke...

So don't try to sit there with the "I told ya so!"

Keep your "run along" to yourself
