But on the topic of the show itself, I feel like Stranger Things could have really benefited from once-a-week storytelling. Think of the hype and discussion that goes into every episode of GoT or the first season of True Detective. There's something to be said for the zeitgeist of everyone watching on the same schedule.

Does anyone watch "Chef's Table"? That's probably my favorite thing to watch on Netflix. First heard about it on The Dan Patrick Show. DP likes a lot of these documentary/reality type shows.

She's like the Sam's club version of Sarah Hyland.

But on the topic of the show itself, I feel like Stranger Things could have really benefited from once-a-week storytelling. I agree. I compensate for it by going to the subreddit of whatever show i'm watching. 99% of the time they have a megathread with a discussion for each episode. Not as good as talking about it with everyone for a whole week in between episodes but it helps.

Another negative of binge watching is that I think it's leading to the perception that Netflix has a small catalogue. On regular cable how many shows do people actually watch per season? Like how many shows would you actually DVR to make sure you watched every week? 4 or 5? People watch 5 seasons of different shows on netflix in 3 weeks and then feel like there's nothing to watch instead of realizing that that would be a full fall lineup on cable.

Not sure I would say the pace picks up though I got the impression from the end of ep 1 that they are going to be involved in a specific murder (obviously probably a seriel killer) investigation which makes it plenty juicy for me.

I am through 9 episodes and am really enjoying it. I read the book years ago. The fact that it is based on a true story fascinated me.

as someone else mentioned, does it pick up? i gave full attention to 1st episode but was not going to be able to give it 100% as i was doing some work and didn't want to miss anything however i did feel it was rather slow however the topic is right up my alley

I know it isn't Netflix, but once I finished Mad Men, I started The Sopranos.

First season was okay. Second season was much better, IMO.

I do like that Tony Soprano is a hard-hitting gangster with a lethal crew, but the show focuses so much on the qualities that make the crew fallible. A bunch of the henchmen are fat, worthless, and/or giant pussies. They tell terrible jokes, or have random and seemingly pointless quirks to their personalities that make you shake your head.

Tony has mental issues, and the primary thread for telling the story is how he relates to his shrink (in the first season). There's the red-herring Priest dude hanging around, being really awkward. There are moments of terrible acting, and you realize it is likely intentional.

They have all the trappings of a crime/mob drama, but also subvert some of the major aspects of the genre... I guess that's the point, and why it was so well received. They are shown to be vulnerable and fallible, unlike the way business operates in the oft-mentioned Godfather-style films. The vulnerable/fallible aspects of the Godfather crew were used to move action forward; the vulnerable/fallible aspects of the Soprano crew are components of the show at its base.

Related: I really liked how they introduced Furio's character. Tony goes to Italy, realizes this crew is strange and soft and not well-run (until he finds out who is REALLY in charge, that is), and this awkward guy Furio is there kind of doing nothing. Tony feels sentimental about his distant family member, but also wants to help and put him to work, so he brings Furio to the states. Furio is futher setup as an unfortunate character, as we see him miserable in the kitchen, doing nothing with himself. His redeeming quality is the comedic relief provided by his amazement at American television and cable.

BUT THEN. Tony takes him on a shakedown, and this awkward foreign dude that didn't seem to be an enforcer at all, puts on the best scene of the first two seasons IMO. Goes HAM on the massage parlor dude and his wife. The way they portrayed the metaphorical light-switch getting turned on was amazing, as was the way they showed Tony in the truck smoking his cigar while it happened, showing that Tony might have issues, but deep down inside, he has a gift for knowing what needs to happen and what people can bring to the table.

Starting season three today or tomorrow.
