Stranger things season 2 was a disappointment

Mindhunter was incredible, my favorite series I’ve watched in a long time

I thought Stranger Things season 2 was great. One of the better sophomore seasons I can remember. They stayed true to the characters and actually developed all of them. Outside of episode 7 I didn't really feel any letdown in storytelling either. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do for season 3.

I was disappointed with Mindhunters. It's odd for something David Fincher is involved with to have almost zero tension or suspense. I felt like I was watching a docuseries on the early days of criminal profiling rather than an engaging series. What was the point? There needed to be more of central case that the season revolved around. Instead they were just going episode to episode talking to different psychos with no consequences to any larger story.

I’ve heard this was more or less the point of the season. A very very long drawn out foundation to build on for future seasons. Season 2 is supposed to be more central to a case. Can’t remember which the foundation was set for it.

Looked like a setup for Season 3. In a 20 episode series I would have thought no big deal but an 9 episode season I thought it was dumb as well. I hope the don’t drag out Stranger Things too many seasons like they did House of Cards.

This, verbatim. Wtf was the point of Mindhunters? I felt like it each episode was quite good but there was zero purpose to the season as a whole.

Finished Stranger Things 2 last night... man as big a 'wtf was that?!" episode 7 was, episode 8 brought the heat and then some... very intense stuff there. I liked the season well enough, it wasn't quite as good as season 1 but I wouldn't say it was a disappointment imo. Looking forward to more.

Gonna finish Stranger Things 2 tomorrow night. I'm through E5. You guys have me pumped for E7's WTFism.

I love ST because of it's period correct. The main characters were the freshmen's we gave wedgies to in 1984.

Doubt it ends up happening. The few times they've planned on taking a comedy show off that people love to rewatch the internet flips out as the deadline approaches and eventually Netflix relents. It has happened with the Office and Friends.

Idk, apparently Always Sunny is heading to Hulu. I don't think both services would be paying for rights to stream it.

Just finished episode 6 last night. Great homage to Aliens with Paul Reiser at the end.

Awesome! They only thing that could make this Goonies/Gremlins mash up better is Sigourney Weaver running around in her undies.

I believe it’s already on there. Not sure how long because I have both but have always watched Sunny on Netflix. But I’ve seen it on Hulu before.

One suggestion before you continue on:

Watch the opening scene of Episode 7 and then skip to the last 5 minutes and watch that. Then make up a story to move the plot between the two scenes. Now you've saved about 30 minutes of your life and you've seen the ideal version of Stranger Things 2.

Appreciated! Had been considering skipping it entirely based on most reactions to it.

Side: I kept seeing Paul Reiser's name in the opening sequence of ST2 and as the season kept going I began to think, "Okay there must be some other actor with that name because the Paul Reiser I'm thinking of still isn't in this thing." It wasn't until right at the very end of the season I finally realized he was the doctor... man he looks different from the guy I know from Aliens, Mad About You etc...

I bet people call him Starskey all the time. That's who I thought it was for about 5 seconds.

"Reiser from Aliens is a pimp, he never could have outfought the demodogs, but what I didn't know until this day,... is that it was Starskey, all along."

Reiser may have been a pimp, but Starsk possessed the pimp hand. The Demogorgan would not have stood a chance.

Episode 7 isn't a WTF as in it's trippy or mind-blowing. It's a WTF as in it is so out of place in this season. You can skip the entire thing and it wouldn't matter. Literally wouldn't matter at all. Just a setup for season 3.

spoilers spoilers spoilers

I honestly don't give a shit about any of the other kids numbered 1-10. Unless they're going to help fix the upside down problem then I really have no interest in their stories. 11's sister was just a cheap X-men clone. From what I've heard most people don't care about them either.

I watched Alias Grace this past week. I was pretty meh about it. I thought it was going to be a psychological thriller but I was wrong. Not a fan of the ending either.

At least some of 1-10 presumably being out in the world provides Netflix with spin-off possibility galore.

Yeah I get that. It just felt like #8 was a cheap X-men knockoff and there’s already a bunch of those shows on tv.

Regarding Episode 7, I appear to be in the minority but I think it was necessary for 11's story.

Spoilers.

She has no moral compass at all prior to this episode. She fills in the gap of her family history, it enrages her (necessary for her emerging power displayed in the last episode) and dips in the dark side after finding her sister. IMO it was necessary for her to find her mom, discover the story of her illness, find her sister and finally return to Hawkins a changed person (for the better). That being said it does appear clumsily executed and out of phase relative to the overall second season.

I understand what they were going for and even agree with what they were trying to do. It was just so poorly executed. The writing was awful, super cheesy. Didn't match at all with the other 16 episodes. Hard to believe it was written by the same people. The acting was equally bad. The dude with the mohawk just chewing scenery left and right. Plus the timing was really odd. You're coming off a great cliffhanger in episode 6 and just slam the brakes on everything to follow 11 around a CW show for an episode. Maybe if it was mixed into 6 and 7 it wouldn't have been so jarring, or maybe it would have just ruined 2 episodes.

The Duffers have basically admitted that while they stand by what they were trying to do thematically the execution was just off. Even Millie said something about how it was hard trying to keep the character consistent when the storyline was moving in weird directions. Basically saying 7 was a misstep.

Problem with this for me, was there ever a moment where you thought 11 would suddenly become this bum criminal? I was thinking the whole time, “okay can we skip to where 11 realizes this isn’t for her and goes back to Hawkins in time for the season finale”. Her character wasn’t built like Star Wars characters which to some degree it tried to play on.

Defo agree on all this. I just didnt hate it and it wasnt too out there IMO. I definitely didnt have visceral reaction most people seem to be having. It would have worked better had it been spread amongst the other episodes a bit. They easily could have started it in epsiode 3-4 and dragged it out instead of having 11 by herself while Hopper was doing his thing.

For me it was like playing a game of D&D. Its the way the series is written. IDK if any of you have ever played D&D growing up but its all decsions which have immediate reprecussions. For me I was waiting to see what decision she made. She has clearly killed people before either for good or bad reasons so it wasnt to far a strech for me to think she could go that route as she didnt have a moral compass in place. She had killed the orderlies from last season, snapped that kids arm etc but i was very reactionary ( immediate dice rolls if you will). Anyway it wasnt a forgone conclusion she was going to end up good. My interest lied in the choice she made.

From Beyond Stranger Things (recommend just to see the kids reactions to some of the Easter eggs that went right over their heads), Nancy confirmed hot in real life. Could add some still but that super skinny pic definitely old and/or bad angle.
