i'm gonna go out on a limb here, one of my all time favorites, y'all can call me soft, for some reason his music has stuck with me thru all phases of life, but he really isn't "rock and roll":

John Denver

(note: yes it does bother me that North Dakota has him on his avatar and I pretty much disagree with him on everything!)

Nothing says rock like...

1) I think "classic" rock is way too limiting. But people have already discussed that here.

2) I'm not sure radio/classic rock formats are really that great barometers for judging this stuff. My local station plays about 50% AC/DC so...

3) Definitely the earlier into the 60's you get the less "classic" rock-y you get. But, even still very little of the Stones and Who early catalog is ever played. I'd argue the Beatles early stuff is still more present than those two bands first couple of years worth of work.

I just posted a 538 article above that says exactly this. Classic Rock is not a genre rather a radio format made popular in the 80s and presently varies by geographical demographics. The demographics shift torward older age groups. Basically the same people listening to the same music they grew with as they get older.

I know but its not the first time I have heard that. I have had this argument with others that think Alabama and Exile are classic rock bands.

Good Lord. Alabama? Lol they kick ass but I'm with ya, not classic rock.

If we are counting Billy Joel (I don't), The Stranger ends up ranked very high. Bomb album.

Billy Joel is hard to pin down. A lot of his albums have a real 80s sound to them, and he's often classified under Soft Rock, but at the same time he also pays tribute to his childhood musical roots in albums like An Innocent Man. "The Longest Time" easily could have been a hit in the 50s with it's do-wop style. There are a few Jilly Boel songs that get play on Classic Rock stations. "Only the Good Die Young," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me", and "Moving Out" come to mind. Overall I agree that Billy Joel doesn't really qualify as a solid Classic Rock reference.

Why Classic Rock Isn’t What It Used To Be | FiveThirtyEight
Here is an interesting article. Summation is that classic rock is really a radio forma and not a genre. It also depends on the location of the radio station and what their demographics love to hear.

I made a similar comment earlier in the thread I think. I've seen a number of stations in my area try and incorporate stuff from the 90s as Classic Rock to try and pull in more ears. Some stations have all together moved away from the "Classic Rock" genre and are self-proclaimed "Rock" now so they can do that. It also reminds me of the Oldies stations in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Sometime within the last 10 years both WMJI and WGRR changed from Oldies to "Classic Hits" to incorporate more stuff from the 70s and 80s. They still play some 60s, but not exclusively anymore. This was an obvious move with older generations passing on to bring in new listeners.

Interesting note from that article: the two most played Classic Rock songs on the stations queried were Dream On and Sweet Emotion, #1 and #2 respectively, both by Aerosmith. Those guys need some more love in the polls.

No love for the Village People??

Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground...
There's no need to be unhappy....that the Village People don't belong in Classic Rock

Wait....country music is now considered rock music?

Oy vey

Hilarious...I thought I was the only one that still said that.

I said that during a timeout last week in our huddle. "Oy Vey...you are thinking too much, just attack, and then we'll fix what we need to...I can't coach you if you won't attack.

They all looked at me and said "Who".

Any votes for The Who? Also for you Texas guys Stevie Ray was more boss than the boss. Top 3 on great guitarist. Also the Eagles were great live and studio. Killed at big venues. A side note if you've never seen Wilco live your missing a treat.

If you never saw Uncle Tupelo you missed out. Wilco's only half as good...

It also reminds me of the Oldies stations in Cleveland and Cincinnati.

I don't know what they are like now, if they are even still around; but WNCX (98.5, Cleveland), and WEBN (102.7, Cincinnati) used to be GREAT Rock stations....

SonVolt uncle tupelo Wilco. All good. Hard to really appreciate until seen live (disclaimer never saw son volt live)

Saw Son Volt's first show at the Riv in '94 or '95. Their first album Trace is my favorite Alt Country recording though i think Ryan Adams is the best show.

And to answer an earlier question above, a million votes yes for The Who. Most important band of the Big 4. I can feel their presence in modern rock more than the other three though it's a cryin' shame there isn't more Zepplin DNA in today's music.

*** Son Volt is playing at Thalia Hall in April. Easy drive for you.

Music is about expression. Silly to say one is better than the others. Depending on the day. Frankie goes to Hollywood hits it on the head.

Important aside who chooses the music at ND games? Crazy train is getting a bit lame...

A few bands I haven't seen mentioned much, if at all:

Chicago- ND Band is trying their best to ruin their rep. Their first few albums are hot fire, and they've had lasting power.

The Kinks- Amazing run in the 60's. A handful of wildly popular singles. Got a little swallowed up in the variety of the 70's but they were one of the best of their generation.

Foreigner- Not a group I love but their greatest hits is pretty strong.

The Byrds- Kinda of The Kinks Light, IMO.

The Cars- Sneaky edgy guitar work. Wrote some fantastic singles and their run from '78 to '81 was fantastic. Also super unique sound, instantly recognizable.

Sad news about Trucks. So many of the guys from the classic rock acts I grew up with are now in their 70's & 80's and passing away. I cut my teeth on ABB and the Fillmore East album influenced me as a guitarist more than any other work. Loved Butch's drumming too.

I had just watched this clip day before yesterday and was already pulling it back up on YouTube to share here when you beat me to it. Good stuff.

It's difficult to know what another person's going through that would drive them to this. I had a HS classmate who was always a very difficult person to get along with and was generally regarded as a bully and an ass, but who knows what demons he was dealing with. At 33 he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head during a fight with his wife and in front of his two young daughters.
