Here's my theory if we have 3 undefeateds
Kelly will present himself as being just focused on our football team and not concerned with the NC picture. But, Kelly is a type A personality, and there is no way he is not going to lobby some votes towards the end of the season. Here is how, if I were Kelly, I would fight to put my team in the NC.
1. ND, at this point, is getting hurt because of not demolishing bad teams. The fact is, in trying to do that, we might inadvertantly put ourselves in a situation where TO's could cost us a game. Also, when winning 21-6 with 5 mins left and throwing bombs down the field is a little too obvious and would probably do more hurt than good to our image. Also, Kelly is trying to get his developing offense to progress forward. They need all the reps running their standard offense as they can get. Getting cute will waste valuable learning experience that will be needed against SC/bowl game.
2. I dont believe for a second Kelly is not strategically positioning himself and ND to make of move in the coaches poll after USC. I think Kelly is relying on his defense to hold USC down and win something like 31-17/34-16. After that, he will fight the image of Oregons offense with his lights out defense. He will call his friends (like Cinci's coach and im sure he has more) and have them vote ND #2 and lean on them to vote for Oregon as #3-5. The logic behind Oregon falling behind will be the ND defense holding SC to a much weaker offensive output.
If ND stays #1 in the computers and Kelly can get 5 coaches to vote for ND over Oregon...that may be enough to nudge ND into the BCS #2 spot.
I just can't believe that Kelly will just let the chips fall where they may. 12-0 teams dont come around very often, and to just sit back waiting just does not seem like something Kelly would do. Most big-time coaches (Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, ND, Ohio State, Cowboys, Yankees..etc) have to have some degree of narcissism. They love the spotlight, they love being the face of programs, and love all the pressure that comes with it. These types of people need control, and will have a very difficult time leaving a championship on the table and not actively fighting to get it.
