I appreciate you letting me know which games I would and wouldn't be interested in. Are you suggesting that I or many others wouldn't watch college football regular season if there was an 8 team playoff? I can only speak for myself and I'll tell you it wouldn't change a damn thing for me. As far as your statement about watching Butler, I think that makes my point that a playoff increases viewership of a playoff after a season.
I realize ND would still have been in the top 6 had they lost to USC, but that wasn't my argument. Rather, I said if OU and KState had won out, ND would have been on the outside looking in. Agree or disagree? Further, had they lost and there was no playoff, would you feel the system was right if there were 6 or 7 teams with 1 loss and ND had no shot at winning the title? Bama/Georgia would get settled, but Fla., Oregon, Stanford, KState, and ND would all have 1 loss, so who is no. 1? How do you settle the ND, Stanford, Oregon argument? ND would have lost to a team that Stanford and Oregon beat, while ND beat Stanford head to head and Stanford beat Oregon. Zero clarity. Kind of reminds me of '93, no?
As far as MLB goes, you are wrong with your 50 year argument, but maybe you were just trying to make a point. I will agree that viewership has dropped over recent years, but to suggest that it's because more teams are in the wild card hunt doesn't hold water. I would suggest there are other factors that have caused the waning interest in baseball. First the whole steroid issue was crushing. Second, they haven't kept up w technology (i.e. use of replays). Third, dumb all star winner gets WS home field. Fourth it's just a slow game and in todays high scoring fast action world, it's going the way of soccer. You are correct, the season is too long, but knowing the Rockies had a chance for the wild card certainly kept many fans atttention in Colorado during the 07 season, did it not?
Anyway, we can agree to disagree. Not looking for a protracted disagreement. You don't like the idea, I respect that. I do like the idea, hope you can respect that. I'm calling it good. Go Irish.
