Mayock was tolerable, but Flutie has never impressed. NBC has never had it right in the booth...turn volume down and dial up ND radio team...surround sound.

How do we keep ending up with these rivals doing ND commentary? Haden, Mayock, Flutie, fuck. Next thing you know when Michigan gives Harbaugh the axe he's going to get a job at NBC. Why couldn't they bring the Bus back to do commentary, or like...any other alumni?

You know...this team hasn't done much ever since Haden first stepped into that booth. I think he put bad USC mojo on us, and it continued with Mayock/Flutie possibly.

almost neg rep worthy.. only because the better half just won the first of our many. lol

Local radio guy near me, who rarely watches CFB, described Mayock from listening to him on the Thursday night NFL games (and probably NFL Network draft work) as someone who probably can't hold a non-football conversation.

I think that aptly describes him. Someone above got it right, the more you deal with that kind of person the worse it gets.

The blue-hairs wanted him to sit down and shut up. They are trying to watch the game.

DOWN IN FRONT!!!

Watch your tone there, whelp. As a blue-hair with bona-fides up the ying-yang I take offense. I protest. I suggest you deposit your derisive, dismissive poppy-cock attitude somewhere in your lower intestinal tract!

Hell, I don't give a shit if he stands in the booth off camera. Don't mean jack to me watching my rabbit-eared 12 inch B&W RCA.

Hell, the hearing's shot so I can't catch a lick of what the announcers say. I rely on the on-screen graphics. In a pinch I'll punch up Closed Caption should I deem it necessary. Hasn't happened yet.

We blue-hairs have the uncanny ability to "tune out" insignificant blather while appearing engaged and interested.

It's a gift bestowed along with "Grand" status. I mean, I mean, I mean – who the hell is gonna give Nana and Da grief?

Wish we'd go to ESPN or FOX.

Pourquoi? ¿Por Qué? Why?

Simply for economic gain for ND, ESPN or Fox?

Do the $$$ metrics of collecting fees (by ND, ESPN, Fox or any other wallet sucking "content provider?"

Mayock replaced...ok. GB done for seaon...ok. Welcome to the too often numbness of being an ND fan. We just have to roll with it and watch the damn games.

Except go undefeated in the 2012 season, and go to the NCG following that season.

Wasn't that the season Mayock replaced Haden? Call it the BC curse! We get all proud and come within striking distance of a championship only to fall short at the end. We still haven't won a championship since former rivals started calling our games, just sayin'

When's Bobby Bowden gonna host the halftime show dag gummit?

I know everybody hates Tom Hammond but unless they hire Don Criqui to call the games for TV, my favorite will always be Hammond, Mayock and Alex........... or Alex, anybody & anybody.

Alex Flanagan could call the game in a bikini, they wouldn't even have to show the game, and I'd be on board.

Actually...probably don't need italics there.

Funny to hear people call out Mayock for jocking opponents nuts but then have the audacity to call ESPN out on their SEC bias. I found him rooting more for the underdog in most cases, not specifically our opponents in general, such as Navy.

Such a good point.

When you hear "Doug Flutie" and "Jonathan Vilma," don't you just think "Notre Dame Football!!!"? As Churchill said after eating some mediocre pudding: "This lacks a certain theme."

but it was over the heads of casual viewers...they wanted him to "dumb it down" so to speak and he wasn't happy with that and wasn't going to change

My wife understood him, for the most part. She had me fill in the blanks here and there, but I thought he did a great job of dumbing it down, and while he was in the booth I had more conversations with "casual viewers" than in the ten years prior.

Not sure who is providing feedback...but NBC got this Wrong.

always liked having Mayock around the ND program, he sees the players a ton and can relay info to NFL scouts which is a great asset to have

Maybe with Mayock gone the other team won't have 85 of the most impressive young men ever anymore.

I don't do the rep thing but I will publicly acknowledge the greatness of your post.

NBC finally got it right with Hicks and Mayock after years of having at least one horrible announcer. Then they go and screw it up immediately. Mayock's analysis is outstanding.

Dan Hicks sucks. He needs to stick to golf, it's like he's speaking at a funeral. Don Criqui's in the damn stadium already.... put him on TV. He's Top 5 of all time.

The Whole NBC production needs to be overhauled. The whole thing is so weak compared to when we are away and the games are on ABC and ESPN. The half time show sucks, the pre game sucks and the post game sucks. Its embarrassing and they make the whole thing boring.

I think this has a lot to do with just having ND games. I don't understand why NBC does not go out and try to ink a deal with 2 second level conferences. Do a deal with one on the east coast (Mac/American) and one on the west coast (Mountain West/WAC) and package a game before and after ND 3:30 games or 2 games leading up to ND night games. You could actually get some pretty good games for NBC and also get games for the second sports network.

NBC had to settle for Flutie when they couldn't get their first choice, David Gordon.

I certainly agree. Maybe even give a similar deal to the armed forces schools. That would give them plenty of meaningful talent to build a core of personalities and they could offer a much better broadcast crew and even have a game day location based on the 4 teams and their schedules. They could search out alumni from each of the 4 schools.

This would be awesome. I'd vote for the AAC to run before/after ND games.

As much as people rag on it no longer being a power conference, UC, UCF, Navy, Memphis, Houston (soon) and even East Carolina (kind of) present some pretty strong football.

With their conference slate, and some of the non-conference games those teams play, NBC would be able to pick out at least two decent matchups every week that would be good warm-up or cool-downs before/after ND.

What do they typically air before games in the fall now? Golf? I don't remember what NBC's Saturday morning/early afternoon schedule looks like.

Couldn't tell you lol. I only watch NBC for the live football games.

If it's not 3:30 on a Saturday, I've got the TV on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, or FS1 for whatever games are on before/after ND.

I wanna say golf is typically on before the ND game, although I don't really watch much golf. I can't see NBC pissing off all the grandpas and 40+ crowd to air some Tier 2 NCAA games. I'd rather watch football myself, but NBC probably thinks there's more money to be had airing the gentleman's game. After the ND game...yeah, I could see some MWC games or a late AAC game, depending on what they typically air after..

They should've hired a retired coach. I always found coaches in broadcasting simplify things for the viewer better than ex-players. They've been simplifying it for meathead players for years. They're used to it. That's why America loved Madden.

It's not just Mayock, either. Listen to all those athletes using film room lingo trying to sound like it's rocket science. And Mayock did it EVERY play. "Run fits", "Gap integrity", "9 routes", "catch radius"(ugh), and all overused "he's a height, weight, speed guy". He's a filmroom guy and he tries to be that during a broadcast breaking down EVERY play.

Years ago, Parcells was on ESPN Primetime after he retired from Dallas. All the ex-players were fawning over the "genius" Manning. They made it this big deal about his theatrics and manipulation of a game at the line of scrimmage. So, they came back from break with Parcells lined up as Manning on their fake field and asked him to explain. I'll paraphrase.

"All these theatrics walking up to the line yelling out things don't mean anything. They have two plays called. When they get to the line of scrimmage he and the center will see where the LB is lined up. Based upon that, Peyton will run or change the play, and the center will call out the blocking assignment."

You could tell Berman and the other guys wanted him to speak for 10 minutes about the complexities and use all sorts of lingo. Sure, the play itself has many moving parts, but it didn't need to be explained beyond that. Mayock, Jaworski, Hoge and the rest will act as if it's molecular biology, though. And they'll show off their insider vocabulary as if it impresses the fans.

Should start a petition to get NBC to hire Tony Roberts.

Holy $hit!!!! This is the best thing I've read all day long!!! I liked Mayock doing games, and didn't have a problem with him giving love to the other teams. On the other hand, I cannot stand Flutie. I don't care for the way he calls a game, nor the fact he's a BC alum. Not a big fan of this move whatsoever. This is a reason why NBC Sports lags behind both Fox and ESPN. They continue to find ways to keep their heads up their asses.
