Per Pete Sampson

NBC announces Doug Flutie will continue as analyst for ND broadcasts in place of Mike Mayock.

Also said the Shamrock Series moves to NBCSN from NBC.

I don't actually mind Flutie, but hate to see Mayock go. Who else are they adding?

ND should fight the NBCSN game. It's a home game and we should be contractually tied to NBC for all home games. Regardless if that "home" game is at Notre Dame Stadium.

I really liked Mayock, interested to see how Flutie does.

We always knew we were going to have 1 game a year on NBCSN... I assumed it'd be our crappy game though, not Shamrock Series which is one of the cooler things ND does and is now getting marginalized.

this happened midway through the season last year...this isn't news guys...mayock was told to basically cut it off w/ his football iq and the whole x and o's of the game...he didn't want to and was replaced w/ flutie who will just provide fluff...much like hammond but able to speak...

Isn't that what an analyst is supposed to do?!

The NBCSN was explicitly put into the contract extension in 2013. Not a shocker here. NBC wants to grow the channel and ND got additional broadcast opportunities for ND football related shows. No big deal either way, both channels look awesome on my TV in the basement.

but it was over the heads of casual viewers...they wanted him to "dumb it down" so to speak and he wasn't happy with that and wasn't going to change

This is a terrible move IMO. Mike has great insight on the players abilities and how the players will do at the next level.

Why on earth would you put the Shamrock Series on a secondary channel? If that's the case why the different unis and locations?

The blue-hairs wanted him to sit down and shut up. They are trying to watch the game.

DOWN IN FRONT!!!

It happened in November for the 2nd to last game and I don't recall it being permanent.

As to the other stuff...pretty telling quote from last Nov.

From the NBC release: “Mike is one of the top Xs-and-Os commentators in football. The sideline analyst role will allow him to dissect the game from field level and present his findings to viewers at strategic times throughout the broadcast,” said Sam Flood, an executive producer at NBC Sports and NBCSN.

Wish we'd go to ESPN or FOX.

The announcing thing doesn't really bother me. Mayock isn't bad, but he's one of those guys that the more you hear of him the less impressive he seems.

The big news here is the marquee game of the year in terms of building ND's brand is getting moved to an off-brand network. I understand it from NBC's standpoint, because they need some ratings draws on NBCSN or they're in trouble. But it sucks for ND that it has to come at our expense; I'm sure Swarbrick, Kelly, et al., are not pleased.

I want Mayock and Spielman in the booth together. It'd be like sitting in the coaches box watching the game.

I think there have been 2 games where the opponent was a name that would draw interest from the casual fans.....Miami in 2012 and ASU in 2013. Aside from that you have had Army, Wazzu, Purdon't, and an awful Maryland team. Not sure how that is really building the brand here nor how that is marquee.

I like the games, they are unique. But outside of ND fans, not sure who is really paying attention to it. The only downside that I can think of off the top of my head is that the recruits will have to turn into a certain channel to see the uni's, assuming they actually watched the previous games for that very reason (which is probably not all that accurate).

Wait, I thought people were tired of Mayock because of his passive aggressive comments about ND and his favoritism towards opponents.

I enjoyed Mayock's insight as an expert on ND's guys and their prospects in the NFL, and at times I loved the X's and O's talk... but at times, it was also a bit much.

I got tired of hearing the word "flash" in reference to a good play, and then that reference turning into the 43rd diatribe about a guy's potential at the next level.

I got tired of hearing Mayock critique plays as they were happening. I love that he knows the strategy and can relay that to the viewer while it's in progress, but I also got annoyed when he would give tiny verbal clues during the play that seemed to say "hey, I know what's happening and I want you to know it." JUST LET ME WATCH THE PLAY. Tell me about the designs, adjustments and strategy between the whistles. I don't want to hear you anticipate the QB's throw or a defender's blown coverage as it is happening. I can't see the whole field like you can, so no spoilers.

I also got tired of the NFL talk in general. Talking about a guy's development and future prospects is cool, but not when you rehash those same things for all 7 games that you've called. "I think he's doing the dice thing too much." "Yeah, that's really all he's got."

I think Mayock would have been the perfect commentator had he been able to find a middle ground between being a scout and being an X's and O's analyst. He just couldn't do it lol.

I'm glad Mayock is out, I didn't care for his in-game announcing. Like the time Trumbetti was blown up by a Michigan player with helmet to helmet contact and he says, "that's just good, hard-nosed football" or something to that affect.

His analysis of players was good and I hope he's still able to do that.

Yeah, I think the effort playing the game at a "neat" location and wearing tricked up jerseys or whatever is a conscious effort at building a specific aspect of the brand. Hardcore football fans are going to be more interested in the USC game, for sure. It is more of an event and an advertisement for the football program than it is a pure football thing, like some of the other games on the schedule.

I agree with most of your post, but I disagree with the bolded. I think it is doing a ton for the brand... from both engaging ND fans from around the country and being a positive marketing experience for ND. Every year just the jerseys alone are a significant storyline among both casual fans and recruits.

First of all, we always tend to have a great showing and win the Shamrock Series game... often in dominating fashion. Second, the alternate uniform thing once a year has become very cool and appeals to the younger generation. Third, playing around the country has been great for fans who either A) live there and not close to South Bend B) like to travel.

I've attended a number of Shamrock Series games. The worst was Maryland in terms of atmosphere but I was in a box for that so it didn't matter too much. FedEx is just a shitty field. Others have been truly fantastic, and this year's will be epic (although I really do worry about arrogantly going into BC's "house" for this game... recipe for disaster).
