And for all of the John Harbaugh conspiracy theorists... McCullough and Harbaugh are both Miami Redskins so there's a good chance he could survive the purge.

Interesting recent story about McCollough. He's from Youngstown (big plus) and was recruited by former Miami U / Seattle Seahawk QB/RB Sherman Smith when Smith was the RB coach in Oxford. Smith is also from Youngstown and a year or two ago, McCollough's mom tells him Sherman Smith is actually his father! Wow.

McCollough is the Chiefs' RB coach after 5-6 years at IU & a single season at SC where he landed our boy Markese Stepp.

Smith retired from the seahawks last year after being the RB coach for the past decade.

I saw that too. Amazing story. Link below is to an ESPN article about the whole story. Good read.

I'm all in on Dexter Williams this year. He's going to make our offense look completely different. He's a game wrecker, and we're so far away from that with Jafar/Tony that it's going to be a new offense if the OL can even block to an average level.

I'll eat all the crow if Dexter doesn't ball out assuming BK doesn't bury him once he's back.

how do i do it

Deland McCullough. Be a smart choice. His son is a 6-4 OLB/DE Freshman All American. Played with Graham Mertz in KC.

He may not come. He works for Andy Reid and the chiefs... currently OC is Eric Bienemy who will probably become a HC some point soon. Working for Andy Reid is like working for Saban these days.

IDK. I can't see them going with a guy they passed over for the DC job multiple times.
He just got the AHC title in 2018, and that was likely to smooth over egos with two guys getting the DC nod ahead of him. I've never quite understood the whole timing thing, and why he wasn't given a shot at DC given he came from Cinci with BK. And keep in mind he had a co-DC title while at CM, which was removed after one year. He also had the AHC titel his last year at Cinci, but didn't bring it with him... Head scratcher.

reps to anyone who can add some insight to his history and why he has bounced between LB and DL without making a jump.

Elston has been with Kelly for a long time. I imagine there is a certain level of trust and respect built up over the years. His willingness to switch coaching positions can easily be attributed to his loyalty to Kelly.

Regarding Elston eventually be considered for the ND head coaching job, it likely depends upon the terms of Kelly's departure. If the program continues to be successful and Kelly leaves for the NFL or for retirement, I can see Elston being a prime candidate for the ND head coaching job. If Kelly is forced out after a couple of under-performing teams, Elston is not likely to get consideration.

In the first scenario above, Elston will be seen as a continuation of the successful program established by Kelly. Elston = Continuation of a good thing.

In the second scenario above, Elston would be swept out in a housecleaning move. Elston = Continuation of a failing or declining program.

In short, Elston's future at Notre Dame is tied to Kelly's success and the circumstances under which Kelly decides to leave.

Of course, all of the above is speculation and I hope Kelly decides to stay for many more years.

I wouldnt expect Denson to leave unless the other two say no. Hed going up against a guy with HC experience, a guy with coordinator and Asst HC experience, while AD doesn't check either of those boxes.

I think it's good interview prep for AD but nothing more.

Really? From what I've read this is almost a done deal, as in should be announced in the next couple/few days, if that. What have you heard?

Prister posted that TCU's Curtis Luper is another name being floated to replace Denson.

Just opinion... it feels like everyone writing assumes AD is leading because of coaching at a blue blood school but I just don't see how you get past the experience factor on both sides of the coin.

Could be wrong but that plus BKs comments prior to the bowl game about expecting his staff to stay, makes me think this is a good interview prep for him.

Via Sampson and some other folks, BK already has a list lined up for replacing Denson, and it would be from the Power 5 ranks.

Maybe Alford is already lined up, but that doesn't match the "interesting" chatter that people keep referencing. It's either gonna be a big splash, or a big curveball.

This is why I think Denson was "encouraged" to seek another position.

This is all speculation, but why would BK have a replacement in mind if Denson hasnt even gone anywhere yet?

I guarantee BK has at least an idea of who would be on a short list of candidates for each Assistant coaching position. If you wait to formulate a list until after someone is officially gone, you are two weeks behind in the chase to fill that spot. Those two weeks could cost you the candidate that you wanted the most.

Agree HC's always have a list coaches in their back pocket.

Alford has to realize now that it was in name only and was never a step up. If he was really the associate HC, why didn't he coach the first three games when Urban was suspended?

Excellent point. If Alford had any thoughts of being HC he now realizes it won't be at OSU.

my guess, Chip or Clark.
Clark would be my pick.

Hmmm......pretty light in the experience category.

I think you answered your own question. It's obvious BK knows him very well. Well enough to believe he doesn't think he has what it takes when it comes to developing and designing elite defenses, but he's an outstanding position coach.

I've hired people that used to work for me at other places, but it was never with the intent for them to possibly be my replacement. I knew their limitations and put them in positions where they could take advantage of their strengths.

Yup, that's what I'm figuring. I just think there has to be a little more to the story. It's like he's been on the cusp at the two previous stops with BK, and then full stop. Don't get me wrong, it's great to have a loyal guy who's great at a position coach spot who is content where he is... I guess I'm just surprised that he hasn't received interest from elsewhere as well.

Goes back to why I don't think he'd ever get the nod if BK leaves, regardless of how BK leaves. I could see Polian as a very temp stop gap, but I'd prefer personally one of the coordinators regardless of the short experience.

Man can't hold a job.
Tennessee State (2006-08).
Maryland (2009
Hampton (2010)
Vanderbilt (2011),
Buffalo Bills (2012),
Western Michigan (2013)
Penn State (2014-2017)
Miss St (2018- )

Sarcasm font? The guy spent four years at Penn State and then followed Penn State’s OC to Mississippi State. Most coaches bounces around early in their career. Five seasons with one boss is pretty good for an assistant.

Didn’t think it was necessary.

Out of all the coaches to move on, he was the last I would pick . . . Unless he was getting canned

How many RB coaches actually become coordinators? For some reason I always think it’s really low. Maybe he realized that to get a chance to be a HC he’s going to have to start at a low level and work his way up. Look at a guy like Alford, AHC and still wasn’t gotten a chance to be a HC.

I think this is a great point. Most RB coaches are brought in simply to be an outstanding recruiter and nothing more. The RB group is supposed to be one of the easiest to coach as much of the production just comes from talent and a good offensive line. If you start as a RB coach it is incredibly hard to move up the ranks and if they are lucky to do so they have often not had enough personal experience doing to work of a HC and fail.

Thanks for posting. This is exactly why AD got the job. Charleston Southern is a Baptist College where the athletic department has definitely lost it's way. The new AD is all about getting the athletic department's mission back on track and he believes that will lead them to success. AD seems like just the man for the job. Congrats!!
