Dilemma. A work colleague passed away. His service is right at kickoff. I had just arranged weekend soccer schedule with my wife (she drives Saturday to San Juan Capistrano and I go Sunday, staying home with the 13 year old) to watch the game. Then the service was announced. Game or service? (I know the morally correct answer) yes, I am leaning towards watching the game at home

Never been a huge fan of funerals, I like to remember people as they lived, not laying in a casket. Send a condolences card to his family, flowers and make your peace before the game. If your wife already had plans, then you already have a built in reason not to go.

Also, ask yourself, would the deceased want you to miss the game?

Have someone light a candle for him at the Grotto.

Did wonders for Denzel and the boys in "Remember the Titans." I bet Louis Nix sings the bejeezus out of it.

Well if the criteria is songs that worked in movies, we should just play "You're the Best Around" on a constant loop. National Championships every year!!!

EDIT: Try this one - Temple Football Forever | Five Misconceptions About Temple Football

I've been reading more stuff published/uploaded by this Mike Gibson. Man, if you thought our fans are sippin' on the margaritas...this guy is still living off the fumes of Al Golden. He's entirely convinced theres a chance they could go from 4-7 last year under Steve Adazzio to 11-1 this season under first time head coach Rhule. That lone loss would be to us, yet he thinks Temple still has the capacity to go 12-0 by upsetting us. He continues to throw out the 2009 season as an example where we lost to teams like Navy and UConn while Temple beat them in the same year or the following year. Yeah, no joke there. I've seen him bring up that 2009 season in 4 different articles, he's really hanging onto that dream. I don't think he realizes this team is a far cry from Charlie Weis's last season in '09. He might be in for a rude awakening.

I will say that we can expect at least one flea flicker in Saturday's game, mark it down. Mr. Gibson is proclaiming their starting QB turned H-Back, Chris Coyer, is a triple threat. I guess that means he can run, catch, and pass in his converted role. Forget the fact that Temple was almost dead last in passing last year under Coyer, he's a triple threat. I do expect Rhule to try and use that to his advantage though and catch us with a flea flicker.

Gibson says this season has been building for some time. The Juniors and Seniors on this squad were the last classes under Al Golden, and some of those guys were recruited by Rhule himself. Of course, even under Golden Temple never faired much better in recruiting than a class ranked in the 50s, always picking up only 4-6 players ranked as 3 stars or worse. He's confidant they've got the linemen to rough people up. We'll see how they do against us.

Speaking of crappy articles, heres one you shouldn't read from Al Lesar of the South Bend Tribune. Apparently karma is going to bite us in the butt and we're going 7-5 this season:

OFD's Eric Murtaugh just posted his Temple preview:

In the latest One Foot Down Podcast I stated that this Temple team isn't likely to be as terrible as most people think. In fact, the Football Outsiders F/+ projections for the 2013 season back up that opinion. The Owls are sitting at 79th nationally ahead of Duke, Maryland, Kentucky, Navy, Wake Forest, and Air Force. As such, Temple is a lot closer to Purdue---just a few spots higher on the F/+ projections---than they are to a truly dreadful team like UMass.

...

Temple should be an improved team---probably more so on offense than on defense---but it's a bit much to ask it to be as evident in game one of the Rhule era on the road against a ranked team. The running game is bound to take a step back, even if it benefits from more varied playcalling, and Temple is going to find it really hard to move the ball on the ground against this Irish defensive front. A less potent running attack leaves the onus on a first-year starter at quarterback working with a nice group of receivers who really don't have much experience. That's not a great recipe for success.

Temple's weakest spot on defense should be safety where they lose both starters and spent all fall camp trying to replace them without much success. The Irish would be wise to test those new starters early and often although we'll probably see a much more conservative attack. Taking the conservative route probably isn't going to lead to a ton of points for Notre Dame but enough to win comfortably.

Also watch out for Temple breaking in a new punter and placekicker. They lose Brandon McManus who was a big part of the Owls strong special teams in 2012 as the 1st-team All-Big East punter and 2nd-team All-Big East kicker. I'll take the Irish to cover mostly due to Notre Dame matching up really well against Temple's offense. I just don't see the Owls scoring many points.

OFD's pburns2010 just posted a film breakdown titled "Temple Preview", but it's really a primer on how ND is likely to use the Pistol formation:

With much of the conversation in the offseason surrounding the installation of the pistol formation by Brian Kelly (and a visit from Pistol visionary Chris Ault), I thought it would be worthwhile to take a look at what plays we can expect to see on Saturday out of the pistol formation. Since it should be a pretty vanilla gameplan, any plays we see out of the pistol will undoubtedly be of the bread-and-butter variety. I truly expect to see the standard plays we've grown used to over the past few seasons, just from the new formation.

Why the pistol formation instead of the shotgun or the singleback Ace formation?

Pistol tends to offer the best of both worlds. It offers the QB the same dropback safety and time that the shotgun formation provides, along with giving him a wider view of the field at large. When the QB isn't worried about his dropback steps, he can focus his brain power on efficiently reading and dissecting a defense. It does lose out to the Ace formation on the play action potential, but it is much better than the shotgun formation at selling a play action fake. The pistol offers the RB a downhill start into the line (useful for GAIII, according to Larz), taking away the biggest downside of running out of the shotgun, the essentially "standing start" that is required for most inside runs. There is an argument to be made that putting the QB directly in front of the RB hinders the RB's initial vision, which puts a lot of pressure on the QB to be able to read defensive fronts to see if he needs to check out of a running play or flip the direction.

The downsides to the pistol when compared to the shotgun are usually melted away by one simple advantage which the pistol has. When you line up in the pistol, you declare nothing about the play's likely direction. Sure, there are ways in the shotgun to counteract this (most effective being the zone read), but why reinvent the wheel when you can simply run your normal plays with the benefits of the shotgun package as well? Especially in the case where you have a non-mobile QB and cannot utilize the zone read as effectively as possible, the pistol provides a great alternative to the shotgun to ensure the running game is still successful.

Very informative.

Condolences and flowers will suffice to ease my guilt as I watch the game. I will drink a shot of Bushmill's to his name. Thanks for your input.

Gonna have to say I'm concerned. After sitting through Syracuse, Uconn, Tulsa, and USF all these games scare me. I hope we are focused and don't let them think they can win. Hopefully 2013 picks us for us after having a bad 2013 so far with the NC loss, Golson, and Decommits. Besides it wouldn't be the start of the season unless I was posting about being nervous about a game now would it?

Local news reporting that Temple has been playing The Notre Dame Victory March, Celtic Chant, and Rakes of Mallow over and over again at practice so that they are used to it for the game.

Our only hope was that the Irish songs would jack with their heads... DAMNIT!!

Temple's strength is running the ball. Problem is, they lost their best rb from last year, their second leading rusher was their qb who is also gone.

They will have extreme difficulty running the ball against one of the best DLs in the country. They can't pass very well either. Don't worry Irish nation... this could get ugly very quickly.

Have to work at 6pm Saturday night, but will at least catch the first 2 hours or so. Wish that there was a local radio station around Omaha that carried the game so I could finish the game on the drive to work.

Still can't wait for the game to kick off. Go Irish!
If you have a smart phone download tune in radio.
Guaranteed you will find the game and its legal

Probably because they know they can rake in business from the Owl fans after they leave the stadium after the 1st quarter.

I wholeheartedly support this idea...

Can we get John Cafferty's "Hearts on Fire" from Rocky IV going too?
It's on my PS3 ND playlist from last years game.

Possibly but looked like a Temple U logo. Maybe Bill Cosby is behind it.

Pretty sure the qb from last year is playing in the H back position this season

Thought he graduated but could be wrong. Sure not an expert on Temple football. Thanks.

Yeah, I thought the same, but read about the new coach moving him. I guess he figured he wasn't much of a passing threat, might as well try him out elsewhere. I do expect them to try a flea flicker as a result of the move though.
