Observations from section 3:

1. Golson is not a great quarterback. He's a great athlete and an okay quarterback. His athleticism saved slow decision making several times. He looks uncomfortable in the pocket and tends to have happy feet. That said, holy athlete.

2. Greg Bryant should be RB1 and I don't think it's that close. All three guys deserve carries but GB was very impressive.

3. Where did that punt return game come from?

4. I get the feeling that Brian Kelly uttered an "oh shit" when Zaire busted that big run. The fan base in the stadium was very aware of MZ and there was some buzz when he came in the game. Impatient fans aren't going to hesitate to fabricate a quarterback controversy if EG makes some mistakes. I'm not saying they SHOULD, but they will.

Is Section 3 at some funky angle?
Golson may or may not prove to be a good QB, and he sometimes does get happy feet. But he's come a long way. Give him a few more real games and he may come farther.
On RBs. Folson looked pretty good too. Maybe 1A/1B.
And Brian Kelly's a fool if he decides his QB based on the "aware"ness of the folks in the stadium. And he's no fool.

I think the "happy feet" is attributed to the O-Line being pretty shaky with the pass protection. I always find I see the game about 10x better on TV than in person, and from my couch-view, the O-Line struggled today. Neither Stanley or Elmer impressed me with their pass protection, although they were certainly strong in the run game. Golson does tend to scramble more than he should, but at least he usually scrambles to pass as opposed to scrambling to run.

Did any of you Golson critics watch the LSU Wisky game? Diid you watch any games last year? He was the best QB I saw today and I watched 4 games. We are critiquing his "happy feet"? The guy played lights out. If he repeats that performance or anything close to that eleven more times he will be in New York for the Heisman ceremony.

Agree on all but #1. Golson is a very good QB, and a very good athlete. Not great at either yet. He was able to escape pressure a few times, and get into the endzone, but his speed isn't great by any means. His elusiveness might be though, but his decision making and throwing ability was beyond great, it was near perfect. Everything he did was on point. He had 7 incompletions, all except for 1 were either drops (3 I believe) and necessary throwaways. So in total, 1 bad pass all game. I'm sorry, but "okay" QB's aren't capable of that, despite the competition, unless they're playing Western Maine College for the Visually Impaired.

I noticed they changed a lot of the game day music at the stadium.
One of the songs sounded like a live recording, but I couldn't make it out do to some poor audio where I was watching.
Anyone know what song/band it was?

Other tidbits...

-The Under Armour gear is much better than the Adidas stuff, both in quality and variety. The only Adidas thing I prefer is the cheerleaders' uniforms.

-The home, away, and shamrock jerseys are on display on mannequins in the bookstore. The shamrock helmet (and entire uniform, for that matter) is gorgeous in person. The replica shamrock jersey doesn't do justice to the version the players will be actually wearing. The sleeves aren't right.

-I don't know how they fixed traffic flow, but getting on the toll road after the game was EASY. They make you turn right out of SMC but there was plenty of room to make an easy u-turn.

There was one song that was actually performed live on the field. One of the band girls sang from the north end zone. Not sure if that's what you're talking about.

I concur. And that "1" was the near INT on the pass to Koyack. His decision making was good. He was never known to be a "running QB" rather a QB with mobility. His arm strength is ridiculous and made some serious pin point throws. His 1st game was good considering it's been 2 years.

He made things happen. I also liked the communication between him and BK. The offense should only get better as they play together.

Next week is gonna be crazy.

Had a decent time at a wedding yesterday...was pretty pissed about missing the game...EVERY GAME, yesterday.

I had a friend updating me.
I haven't seen any footage beyond a few passes. Any idea when the full game video will be up?

I just needed to chip in :

Any criticism of Golson is unwarranted. He did everything right yesterday. If you re-watch the game his feet were a triumph of conservative motion. His feet were quiet on the three plays he completed where the ball traveled over 50 yards in the air, and the other two (one to Prosise and one to Fuller) that should have been caught!

Golson moved well to avoid sacks and extend the play. The offensive line played an incredibly fast defensive front. A couple of those young guys, especially the guy over Stanley and Elmer may be as fast as anyone the Irish face this year. Were they the best? No, I am not saying that. But they moved and finished well. Better than anyone I say against OSU, UM, MSU, USC, or Stanford.

Speaking of which. Not only did the offensive line play better in all phases of the game than I could have imagined, they did specific things that they may not have done as well last year :

Christian Lombard is 10 times the player he was last year. I can't remember the last time we had such a great right guard. He kept that kid quiet all day over him, and that will be the only time that will happen this year.

Christian and the whole middle of the offensive line held their blocks at the point of attack and moved well to the second level. There were more trapped, walled off linebackers yesterday than at any point last season. Hanratty was great. The five worked as a unit.

Greg Bryant will never be the number 1 running back until he learns to pick up the blitz, and learns the play book. He left Everett with his dick in his hand yesterday, and Everett still scored! And a lot of the shortcoming in pass protection yesterday, wasn't with the five interior linemen!

I disagree. The touch he has on the long bombs and his field awareness tells me he is going to be a great one for you.

Agree on the Golson portion, but thought the Oline lack cohesiveness. Stanley was taken to the cleaners around the outside 1x that I can recall, but I also recall several instances where Rice pressured and or broke down the pocket-which surprised me considerably. IMO, the OL did not surpass expectations. However, there was nothing there that could not be fixed by Michi-cough-F@ck!-gan.

GB will be fine, as long as he does not get in the doghouse ala Carlisle. Seems BK is willing to overlook that mistake as he deliberately did not name names on Sundays presser re: that specific play (may have been Sat presser).

I'd have to re-watch, but I didn't see Bryant miss any pass protection, and on the draw where Golson scored, The OL took Bryant's guy, otherwise he probably would have had the block. Bryant eats first!

Disappointing that they didn't play Dropkick Murphy's at the beginning of the game.

I can't wait to hear this on Saturday. I'm about to get fucking weird. IDK how I'll make it through work this week.

It was terrible. I don't mind some of the pump-up 3rd down music but they were playing some Chris Brown (not the WR) song on the PA during the timeout that I could hear on TV. I used to make so much fun of michigan for doing shit like that and now ND is doing it. I'd much rather have the band play something during that time. The older fans are gonna be sitting and doing nothing regardless. Don't ruin the experience with some piped-in pop shit. I enjoy hip-hop and even occasionally will dance to a Chris Brown song at a club or something, but that doesn't belong at an ND game where you've got an excellent band.

not sure why this link wasn't working before, but it has worked for me:

NBC Sports

After watching the game live, and watching the replay at least 2 full times (with the post game PC's). I think BK loves the way the offense played, and especially Golson. By his Halftime and post game interviews/PC's, I think BK could barely keep his poker face, I think BK sees something he hasn't seen before at ND. Of course he cant come out and say it, but I think BK is truly excited about what this team has to offer this year.

Re-watch the game, this time without a hard on.

Reps, sir! I agree with what you say. I think Kelly thinks he has his machine built and running on all cylinders.

Some have brought up the O-line. Rice's d-line was fast and much better than anyone expected. But they were fast, explosive off the ball. That is the hardest thing to coordinate pass pro with the running back on, and the most difficult thing for a new line to deal with. These guys from Rice were exploding and stunting with the best. Maybe not as big and strong as some, but really good. For example unlike anything Michigan faced Saturday! And they got it corrected, Covington was buried all game long, and the rest were buried at the end of the game! All phases were firing Saturday. Wait until ND puts a heavy set on the field with Luatua, or puts Zaire on the field with Golson, or some crazy stuff like that!
