Oh, Pish Posh.

There are things such as the old tried-and-true paper and refrigerator magnets.

One can listen to music or get weather updates by getting off one's arse to turn on the radio or TV.

Hell, there are even remote controls that can turn on and off these appliances and (GASP) change channels, adjust volume without requiring any bizarre level of interpersonal relationship.

Anyone get their Echo yet? Thoughts? And specific 'skills' you use?

I love it. Use it to play music all the time. I like getting news and quick score updates without having to look for my phone.

I haven't really used many of the skills yet (I will probably try the Uber skill soon) but there are a few I have heard about that I want to check out (Wayne Investigation). I also want to experiment with cooking.

The Echo is fairly limited so far but it has unlimited potential. I can't wait until it can answer more general questions (i.e. how far is X from Z). It can answer some stuff but needs to be able to do more.

We received ours last Friday but we just brought our new daughter home Saturday midday. I haven't had time to set it up with all of my accounts but we've already found it very useful. Easy to put on music, request info on news/weather (my wife has thrown a few cooking questions to Alexa).

I foresee this device being one of those "if only I'd bought it sooner". I still need to link up my spotify account and download the app so we can create to-do/to-buy lists to share between us. I'll try to remember to post back once I've had time to set it up thoroughly.
Your daughters first word will be 'Alexa', times sure have changed.

I set mine up but haven't set up any of the skills yet as I haven't had much time. I did see there's a FFB skill where it will give you specific player updates or general news on all players.

Sounds like it's basically another device that does the same thing as a smart phone.

It is, in a way. But it is also much more convenient. I can get my weather and road condition reports, etc, for my day by just asking. It CAN control home automation, but you have to have the right hardware to interface with it. I would imagine that many of the manufacturers of home electronics will be integrating some kind of "Echo type" interface into their equipment. Potentially, you could walk in the door and say, "Alexa, turn on the lights in the living room, start a pot of coffee, check home voicemail, and turn the family room TV to Monday Night Football."

If you have one of the car location services, or phone location services, you could probably even add in, "Alexa, how long until the wife gets home?"

Now THAT would be a big selling point, I'm betting.

That's the thing, with two kids under 2 and a large number of side projects going on, we're rarely sitting down. It's far easier holding a baby in one arm while chasing a toddler to say, "Alexa, what's the weather today?" or "Play classical music channel".

We honestly don't watch much TV, maybe a couple hours per week. The shared Grocery/To-Do lists will be a boon for us since we often speak about things we need while we're busy with other chores.

There are a large number of things I can see this helping with but I do agree to an extent with what you're saying. I'm usually not overly excited about Gizmo's but even as a general speaker to play music, the Echo receive high marks.

Prime doesn't seem to be working for me. Anyone else having an issue? Anytime I try to play music it says there is an issue but nothing else. I logged on to Amazon and click on 'Prime' and it does the same.

Mine was giving me trouble. After googling around, it seems to be a nationwide outage.

For a minute I thought I fucked something up. Then the music started working but still no video. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't on my end. Thanks.

I actually restarted my internet, uninstalled the app on my Roku, and installed it again. Then I used the google machine.

I have a smart TV but never hooked it up to my internet. If I do, will I be able to do Prime w/o the Amazon stick?

I grabbed a charging set for my son's Xbox one's controllers and a couple of Amazon Prime instant videos that were marked down to $2.99 and $4.99 respectively

I might grab the PS4 bundle -- any impressions of Uncharted 4 and Last of Us?

Was it just me or was this year a bust? I was on for a couple hours and didn't find one thing to purchase. Just a bunch of junk and the few things I would consider already had a wait list.

Last year I had no money because I was paying for a wedding and saw several things I would like to buy. This year I have money and can't find anything that is significantly marked down that I want. Go figure.
