I thought so too. Android hand reaching out comforting R2. He did have the typical Jedi clothing though, not the black one from RTOJ. I thought that totally was Luke.

Yeah - I am fairly certain it's him. It's at 1:40. And it's quick.

Still no Luke. It's getting weird.

I'll preface this by stating that I've read no spoilers/ speculation about Episode VII; this is simply my conjecture. Isn't it obvious that Luke = Kylo Ren? We get that scene of him looking at Vader's helmet and promising "to finish what he started". Ren is all over the trailers, but Luke is mysteriously absent...

Yeah, I thought about this but I am not sure Luke is the one with Vader's mask in the trailer though. Why would he go through all of that to redeem his father, then u-turn and start the whole thing all over again?

I guess now that I think about it we don't really get a good idea of where luke is on the spectrum of Light vs Dark by the end of ROTJ.

That would be so sucky.

The original trilogy gets away will and kinds of tropes and cliches because it basically invented (or at least mainstreamed) those tropes and cliches. Luke-to-the-Dark-Side would be so trite in 2015.

Besides, it's been done. The super-powered good guy Jedi who wipes out Sith, wins the war, turns bad, and turns into a superpowered dark-side wielder before his eventual redemption is the story of Revan. I don't care if Disney blew up that part of the canon, Luke Skywalker eats Revan's gym shorts.

I am not nearly on the level of the big Star Wars fans here, but I've been trying to catch up a little so I am at least fluent in the basics when the movie comes out. And in my reading-up, I've come across this theory and it is definitely out there, but I have also seen it shot down pretty confidently and convincingly by a number of seemingly very engaged Star Wars experts.

Maybe he creates a villain in order to catalyze the reformation of the Jedi/ "awaken" the Force? I doubt they'd actually make Hamill a bad guy.

(1) We know Mark Hamill was heavily involved with this film; (2) Harrison Ford is featured prominently in the trailers, but not Hamill; however (3) a mysterious masked villain devoted to Vader takes center stage. Seems too much to be coincidental. It's not as if Abrams is above cliche, after all.

Man I hope you're wrong. IMDB (which I not is not gospel) has Kylo played by another actor.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - IMDb

I am also spoiler free, but here is what I think...

The theory seems to fail, if for no other reason, than Mark Hamill is too short (and now fat) to be Kylo Ren. But I also think the pre-movie publicity has explicitly stated that Driver plays Ren, and that there are pictures of him in costume without his mask on.

My theory is:

(1) Kylo Ren is Han and Leia's son, thus a "Skywalker"
(2) He is not encouraged to use the force/there is no one to train him because Luke has become a hermit (like Ben and Yoda, and contra the Jedi who got the universe into a jam)
(3) Kylo ren becomes resentful, thinking that its his destiny to become a Jedi/Sith
(4) The government is a mess, and chaos rules, something needs to be done
(5) He runs away, and/or gets sucked in by some bad guys
(6) He starts to idolize his grandfather as a powerful man brave enough to attempt to bring order to things (5 and 6 may be reversed); order is needed
(7) Luke is called out of hiding to find him once it becomes clear he is working with the bad guys
(8) Luke does not feature prominently until Episode VIII

BONUS: I think Rey is his twin sister, and when he runs away, she ends up with him (kidnapped/stowaway), but she ends up getting abandoned (possibly mind wiped). Why else would she have the swanky accent and say "I'm nobody?"

My best guess is that Abrams is intentionally keeping Luke out of the trailers in order to stoke this narrative. I don't think it's probably true.

But it's possible that he becomes Kylo Ren after the movie begins, at which point another actor becomes the voice (a la James Earl Jones or Darth Maul). Hence the IMDB listing.

I think a lot of this could be accurate, especially #8. I know I keep forgetting this will be a trilogy....what's to say he has to have a major role in this first film?

I'm also glad we all seem to be generally spoiler free. I would encourage everyone to use clear spoiler warnings if they do come across something.

This is as close as I can get to the story. It does mirror the Solo twins story from the EU though...I am hoping JJ can do better than that.

It interesting to think what the a new government would do with Luke and Leia after the war? You can't exactly have Admiral Ackbar stand up and say:

"Everyone, I would like to introduce to heroes of our cause. Luke and Leia Skywalker.

They are the twin children of Anakin Skywalker, the unstable Jedi who became Darth Vadar and ravaged the Galaxy.

Now I know what you are thinking, Jedis don't have children! Well this one did. His mother was Senator Padme, from Naboo. Why does that sound familiar? She was the Junior Senator who worked under Senator Palpatine, the future Emperor and her husband's Sith master. But don't worry, Padme had no idea what was going on! Don't let the fact that she had a secret marriage to a Sith make you think she was in on anything.

In any event, Luke and Leia proved their loyalty by trying to kill their father, who was eventually killed by the Emperor.

We're nominating Leia as President, and Luke as Chief Peace Keeper."

I'd be fine with it staying with the Skywalkers at the center, as long as its well done.

Would be nice if vBulletin had spoiler tags.

Its an add on that can be added on if our site overlords so choose.. Outside of that I think most people have white backgrounds so you could do this:

Spoiler!

Vader is Lukes Father! GASP!

Highlight to see the spoiler!

This just occurred to me and there's absolutely no basis for it other than the similar lightsabers...but....what if Kylo Ren is Darth Maul's son?

That would provide a nice connection to a good aspect of the sequels.

It's Adam Driver, and he's playing a human:

I understand it's Adam Driver but how do we know he is supposed to be human besides those unclear screenshots? And if Kylo Ren's mother is human that would certainly make it possible he has the physical features of a human. Darth Maul's specifies is very human-like other than the skin color and spikes on his head.

Just a theory...

Maul's demonic appearance was his defining feature. Would be odd for him to sire a child that looks nothing like him:

I agree it would be odd. Don't think it's impossible though depending on the mother. Just throwing it out there in case it is true so I get brownie points.

I think he must be related to someone we already know but I don't buy that he is Han/Leia's son.

Nope.

A Zabrak male breeding with a human female results in a Dathomirian.
