But you know... That's MSU's niche. They get the majority of guys they want in Michigan because UM recruits more nationally, they've done very well in Chicagoland and they shred Ohio for guys Ohio State doesn't want.
If you are willing to pay $5M+, it's a good job because it's 2x what you make at Cincy, other G5's or the lower tier programs in P5. I thought this could be a good spot for Dave Clawson to pull a Rhule/Baylor. He gets 2x as much money as he does at Wake and he knows how to farm 3*'s.
Fickell probably made a good decision turning down the B1G money because in 12 months, he'll be on the hot list again and won't have to deal with the NCAA.
That's MSU's niche under Dantonio. No coach other than Dantonio has had the type of sustained success or even close that he had since the early/mid 1960's. So it's not MSU's niche, it's Dantonio's niche. Once that coach leaves, it's probably back to the same old same old. 4th best team in the division. In fact, that's already started.
I don't think comparing Clawson to Dantonio is remotely fair to Dantonio at this point. Farming a few quality 3 stars annually is a lot different than winning 36 games over 3 seasons with 2 NY6 victories. Which is the Dantonio peak at MSU that Clawson hasn't come close to touching. The previous 5 coaches at MSU, before Dantonio, from 2006 to 1980, are as follows:
- John Smith was 22-26 (win pct. of 46%) during his 4 years at MSU prior to Dantonio taking over.
- Bobby Williams was 16-19 (win pct. of 46%)
- Nick Saban was 35-24-1 (win pct. of 59%)
- George Perles was 73-62-4 (win pct. of 54%)
- Frank Waters was 10-23 (win pct. of 30%)
MSU doesn't have a history of mining 3 stars into winning Big10 titles or competing for big playoff games. Dantonio does.
