I'm pretty late to this party, just scanned through the thread so I apologize if I repeat... but back to the discrepancy in offense vs deffencive emphasis, is this a look into the psychology of the new UM coach? Is he trying to return the skunk bears into a "defensive minded" program?
Hoke was a LB at Ball St, and most of his non-head coaching experience is on the D-Line. That had to have played into him being hired initially, with the stink of RichRod's defense still lingering around Ann Arbor.

That coupled with Mattison's arrival from Baltimore looks to me like a team that is trying for a face lift. I mean, it's common sense that yea, their defense was bad. They need to add strength there. BUT the point that I am trying to bring up; is that premise being fueled by some proclivity that Hoke and his new big time D-Coordinator share?
