Chatman was ranked as a top-30 prospect coming out of high school, but other than that one moment of glory against Indiana, he never made the expected impact.

That doesn't mean Chatman's departure won't hurt, though. Michigan now has two open scholarship spots for 2016-17 and no obvious candidates among either grad transfers or late-rising 2016 recruits to fill them.

Kam Chatman, who hit the heroic shot in the Big Ten tournament that clinched Michigan a berth in the NCAA Tournament, announced Tuesday afternoon he is transferring.

He's the fourth Michigan player to transfer this offseason, following Spike Albrecht, who announced earlier Tuesday he will play his final season at Purdue; Ricky Doyle; and Aubrey Dawkins, who will play for his father, Johnny, at Central Florida.

Michigan now has two open scholarships, if it chooses to use them. Beilein is actively searching for some bulk, as the point guard position is set with Walton and incoming freshman Xavier Simpson.

This has been an offseason of change for Michigan (23-12 this past season), which also lost two assistant coaches to head-coach jobs elsewhere -- Bacari Alexander to Detroit and LaVall Jordan to Milwaukee. Beilein seems to be well down the road toward hiring their replacements.

Chatman, who blatantly traveled while shatting his shorts... before gathering himself and luckily hitting a shot that was not negated by the officiating crew even though there is instant replay which is a worthless concept if it does not overturn these exact events.... is transferring and no one cares.

If a healthy Spike Albrecht was running the point last year in W Lafayette, they could have won it all. I've never seen a team with that much talent at the 3-4-5 with less leadership and competency at the 1-2. It was sad to watch.

There may be talent, but if he's going to spend his time evaluating and recruiting Australians, I'm all for it. Makes him spend his time over seas and every Aussie he takes is one US kid that he doesn't.

We have a DC who openly "hates recruiting". I doubt Harbaugh is worried about the likes of ND

Why recruit when you can spend your time writing the playbook in Hebrew just to challenge people.

Unless I was single, or I hated my wife and kids, I would absolutely HATE to work for Jim Harbaugh. His coaches are going to be on the road, doing these 20-25 satellite camps, literally the entire time when they’re supposed to have some sort of a break. Come August, they are full go all the way until February as it is.

So they’re going to be doing these camps, also while they have to be recruiting non-stop, also while they have to be making sure their own positions players are doing the right thing (no small task – if your player screws up, it’s reflects poorly on you and head coaches like Harbaugh will make sure you feel their wrath), also while you have to doing what normal college coaches do – improve your craft, study opponents (you still have to know what the analysts break down for you), study film of your own players, etc etc etc.

It’s just not healthy long-term. And even short term, it might hurt. It’s not easy to be “on” all the time for guys not named Jim Harbaugh, and it could hurt your team as people don’t perform as well when they are exhausted/burnt out (not to mention contentious meetings could be even worse because guys are so cranky/exhausted). I could be wrong and this could be incredible for Michigan in regards to recruiting and exposure, and maybe the coaches love being away from their families, especially in place like Australia, Hawaii, Shreveport (hahaha). But for me, as a coach, I think it would suck and would definitely affect my happiness/performance.

Yes it's a grind to work for him but you take that job in a heartbeat, learn amap-aqap, catch the glitter than comes off his wand during Michigan's resurgence and have your exit strategy mapped out with a good reference on your resume. There are guys out there who thrive in the road warrior positions. I loved it but I couldn't take the pay back then so I left to be a road warrior for a Fortune 500. Ten years later, all my buddies still in the biz were laughing at anything under $200k but straight out of college in GA, volunteer & part time assistant positions... there's a lot of Ramen being thrown down the hatch when not eating with the team.

One thing to remember about the real world: At the level of compensation these guys are at, there is no consideration for time outside of work because work is not 24/7, it's 60/60/24/7. It doesn't matter what industry you're in if you're making $250k+. You are married to your job and are always on the clock. Vacations are sitting on the beach in Maui with your iPad in hand and 2 cell phones on your lap. It is what it is.

Agree and is why companies have to pay handsomely regardless of the position. If you're married to the job, you need to money to keep the wife happy because she doesn't want to sit at home all the time.

Son in law took a job as a consultant with a software company almost a year ago. They pay him a very handsome six figure salary. I warned him that there was a reason the salary was so high (travel all the time). He hates his job and is looking for a new one.

lol American Samoa is a US territory. Nevertheless coach's can recruit kids from all over the world, they don't just have to be North Americans
