I've never been one who feels fifth years "deserve" that spot. If ND has 85 scholarship athletes with 22 seniors, then they can sign 22 new recruits. If they decide they want to bring 5 redshirts back then they can sign 17. They are one of the few schools that don't over 1-year renewable scholarships...but they don't offer 5-year scholarships. The student athlete is promised 4 years to get their bachelors. The fifth year is an option if ND wants. Should never count toward oversigning. ND knows who they are considering to bring back and then also have options in case they miss out on NSD. This is not what the SEC and Harbaugh do. They sign more than are graduating and offer gray shirts or force them out or withdraw their scholarship offer prior to NSD.

Isn't ND technically oversigned right now until 5th years/transfers get figured out?

Probably, but we could probably take every possible 5th year and by September we'll still be a few players short of the max. Hell, we've even taken grad transfers for the last two years and still didn't meet the max.

Harbaugh coaches ND now? Why didn't someone update the Quick Hits thread!

There's no bending the rules. You're either within the rules or you're breaking them. He's doing what 99% of schools do or wish they could do (if they could get better players than the ones committed). Some people just hate him because he's awesome, he's exciting, he's going to steal some of our recruits, and he's Michigan. Now should the NCAA do something to prevent this from happening? Totally different story. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Ok... I lied, but I will try to play nice here...

The first sentence makes zero sense to me. I reread my post over and over and apparently you are misreading something or I don't comprehend your point.

On the second, that is exactly what i'm talking about. There is grey area in everything in life. Notre Dame values can be encompassed in doing what is right, not just what is allowed. Most people in the Notre Dame community wouldn't applaud cutting players or lowering character standards of the program. That would be totally legal, but we all realize that life is about "how" you do things, not just what you have done. Furthermore, it is totally fine respecting a coach at Michigan, but respecting one because of the way he bends the rules past our belief system and/or slobbering all over him are both traits that don't jive with how we do business. That's not how the majority of Notre Dame fans think or present themselves. That character trait of doing right, is deeply entrenched into the culture of the program and the Catholic beliefs of the University. A cornerstone of our culture, if you will. That's why I find it bizarre that you would like a program that's biggest draw is something you so easily disrespect.

Does that make sense?

Lol just another arrogant ND fan. Don't you realize that it's OK to treat athletes like cattle because everyone else does it?

No. He's not the coach of ND, so I don't hold him to the requirements of ND. I'm not one to get on a pedestal and look down upon everyone below me. I see the world for what it is, and he's doing exactly what everyone else, non-ND is doing. He's just better at it than most.

You're skipping to the conclusion that I'd like this at ND so you can take a shot at my character and fanhood, but I never said I want that at ND, did I? I'm viewing Harbaugh as Michigan, OSU, Texas, USC, every major program non-ND. I'm not going to look down on every program just because we do things above that. I can appreciate we go above the rules without being a snob to the masses. I think the NCAA has to change the 'pulling of scholarships' rule and until they do that, I get why Harbaugh and everyone else do it and it's not going to stop.

So you wouldn't kill anyone, nor would you want your friends/family to do so.

But you really respect how Dahmer got after it?

Don't stop... Get it, get it...

Please don't confuse this with me sticking up for koon, but murder and crootin/roster management tactics =/= murder or actual cannibalism.

Conclusions on Michgian Decommits

Conclusions on Michgian Decommits

Where they ended up -- Link

Offers pulled - Erik Swenson, Rashad Weaver and Matthew Falcon publicly announced. Falcon said his offer was pulled due to season-ending injury.

Victor Viramontes (Ca) - QB/Ath, probably had his offer pulled - twice. Mich site had him rejoining the class on Signing Day, quoting him as having "great news" for Michigan and said he was a "silent". Then he did not sign and did not return their phone calls for a clarification.

David Reese wanted Early Entry, but was told three weeks before the spring semester that he could not have EE. Reese was an offer by Hoke.

Messiah DeWeaver - was the second QB commit in the class and decommitted after Harbaugh recruited Zach Gentry as a transfer. He could see that he would be the seventh QB on the roster. DeWeaver was Michigan State's only QB with this class and was EE.

"Slow played" by coaching staff - Sir Patrick Scott, Antwaine Richardson (also had injury requiring surgery) and Kiante Enis. All were January decommits as communication by the Michigan staff ended. The class was filling up.

Dele Harding (Md) never indicated why he decommitted in October after being committed for a year. After visits to lesser B10 schools - Md, Rutgers and Illinois, he signed with Illinois. Offered by Hoke.

Only two - Jordan Elliott and Devery Hamilton - were late commits with high rankings that changed their minds. Elliot went to Texas. Hamilton went to Stanford.

Broderick: 'Shady' reality of college recruiting Writer for Battle Creek, Mich paper focuses on three Michigan schools and recruiting.
“I have never had that happen to any of my kids, but I think it’s a new phenomenon,” Battle Creek Central football coach Lorin Granger said. "I talked to a couple coaches at the clinic this weekend, and it sounds like it’s becoming the new wave of doing things, but that ticks me off, it really bothers me. A lot of schools are getting commits from kids, but then brushing them off if they are getting a prettier girl they can take to the dance. It really bothers me.”

As shady as some stuff that Harbaugh did it sounds like he dumped Hokes scraps.

Only a two players committed before Harbaugh was hired. Most were offered at satellite camps with commitments when they visited Michigan in the summer. 247 shows home visits by H and his staff after their verbal and long before their offers were pulled. They probably thought the staff's assurances indicated they were not considered "scraps". He's burned bridges with many high school coaches as they learn what commitment means to Harbaugh.

Derrick Green to Transfer from Michigan: Latest Details and Reaction

Reported in January after Green did not dress for final three games and did not travel with the team to the Citrus Bowl. Green, a former 5 star and a power back, is a graduate transfer. Is Ty Isaac next?

well, Ty said he was staying. Few months back he was asked by a reporter and laughed off that question.

If he can get his head out of his ass, he'll be the starter this year IMO. Best talent of all the guys coming back. Drake Johnson has speed but he's stiff in the hips and made out of glass. DeVeon Smith is a powerful runner and he's a tough tackle, but his vision is kinda bad and he's slow as dirt.

Maybe one of the freshman will surprise, but if I had to put money on it I'd go with Ty being the guy. He kept missing blocking assignments and getting the QB kill-shotted, dropping catchable swing passes, and fumbling the ball all year last year. He needs to clean that up. Also got into some trouble for violating team rules and was suspended for a few games.

He's the best RB on the team, he's just got to want to earn it and he can do that by work on cleaning up the mistakes and staying out of trouble. IF he can pick-up the blocking assignments and just hang onto the ball and not fumble it he's the starter.
