I don't see anything wrong with the Opinion piece, though I would separate "the bad business of college football" based on coaching behavior. This is how Harbaugh operates. Buyer beware.
Reading the articles, Jim and Jay Harbaugh came in late after hired, threw the football around, impressed the family with his competitiveness and intensity, focused on Gentry as his QB of the future after a redshirt year, and got him to decommit from Texas. The word "meritocracy" was even used. And "this is the man that developed Andrew Luck".
Check out an article, "Eldorado's Gentry feels wanted by Harbaugh, Michigan". The Gentrys were impressed when Harbaugh told them that he had checked out 62 QBs before deciding Gentry was his number one target in the Class of 2015. On NSD, Gentry was the fourth QB on their roster including another '15 commit, Alex Malzone, who committed under Hoke.
As their primary QB target, Texas had to scramble for a QB commit, They then got visits from other QBs and ended up taking Kai Locksley, also a project. Gentry would have been their third string QB at least this year. A new OC who ran a spread was a consideration for Gentry.
Harbaugh then got transfers in from John O'Korn, who would sit out a year, and Jake Rudick, a grad transfer in Feb after NSD and in April respectively. Sound familiar? Commits, then over-recruiting?
So, Gentry starts over with nine TEs, including the #2, #9, #34 (an early admission) this year and the #9 from '15, who has had a redshirt year at the position.
Harbaugh is three scholarships over eighty-five. Gentry, from his quotes, loves Michigan and is willing to compete. Is this Harbaugh's way of pressuring Gentry to leave? Sound like the process with any players who transferred last year?
Alabama was recruiting Gentry. Gentry even had a call set up with Saban, which he canceled, after visiting with Harbaugh. With a move to TE at Alabama, this year Gentry would be their third string TE, competing for second string, and have the experience of winning a NC.
Any father would be upset. Whether Gentry stays and is a great tight end or gets Harbaughed is to be determined. You just wonder what Harbaugh has said about PT to his two highly-ranked recruits and his early admission TE this year.
You get treated differently elsewhere. Harbaugh is a true Skunkbear.
