An old friend's son who went to Fork Union for a prep year got a ride to U of M at quarterback. Never a top national choice, this kid was 6'4" with some mobility and a strong arm. He did really well his first year or so, and then in a spring game he really screwed the pooch. Not my words. Apparently whatever happened was enough to warrant the "Wrath of Carr!" Lloyd used to burry kids that pissed him off.
My friend went to him, hat in hand asking for a release. Up until that exact minute my friend was a big Lloyd fan. Lloyd basically told my friend to fuck himself, that he would never grant him a release. Period. It was a shame because my friend had strong connections at the University of Toledo, where his kid would have had a shot at being a real star. But Lloyd wouldn't release him. I have talked to a lot of people who just didn't get this. There was no reason to jam him, most coaches would have appreciated having the scholarship back.
So, the kid went D-2. And you have one more story to add to your collection of Lloyd Carr, King of the Ass-hats stories.
Lloyd Carr is a moron. He cost himself a shot at another title in 1999 by splitting time with Brady/Henson in the first half of that season. Brady was a 5th year senior, team captain that had started every game as a RS JR and went 10-3. He started the games off with Brady put took him out of games the first 6-7 games that season to split reps 50-50 with Henson. Michigan dropped a couple games doing that and Carr said enough with that shit, put Brady back full-time for good and Michigan didn't lose another game and finished 10-2.
Carr did all of this to keep a superstar phenom recruit that he promised the world to happy and keep him from leaving to play baseball. The kid wound up leaving eventually to...play baseball.
Lloyd Carr was a massive douche and idiot. Glad he got pushed out. Not glad they hired Rodriguez to replace him though. They should've hired Harbaugh back in 2007.
