I long for the day when Lizzy Seeberg isn't brought up relative to every sexual assault case on every college campus. What's more tragic than many cases is that Seeberg took her life. What's borderline mundane is what actually happened even if literally everything she said happened.
Lost in all of the media outrage is that even if everything she said was 100% accurate (which would be impossible considering her two statements had discrepancies with each other, and cell phone record conclusively proved certain parts of her statements to be false) the accused would be at worst looking at a class D felony and probably zero jail time. More likely than not, going by Seeberg's statements that he stopped of his own volition and that she "froze" instead of vigorously protesting, he wouldn't be convicted of anything... or even indicted in the first place.
Relative to Brendan Gibbons, you're talking about a felony with upwards of 20 years in jail. And you're talking about felony witness intimidation and other charges for Lewan. What was covered up by Michigan is on a completely different level than the alleged "crime" at ND.
But the story with ND was much juicier for obvious reasons, so the media ran with it for hits. That's the society we live in.
