It isn't that different, although of course Kelly wasn't fired- it's more of a gambit when you fired a guy who had usually won 10 games or whatever. High risk/high reward makes sense if you fired the low risk/low reward guy (in that respect, BK's tenure at ND was similar to Franklin's tenure at PSU).
I think there's a big difference between promoting an "unproven" high risk/high reward type coach who has been in your program and you've watched and gotten to know as a person, vs. hiring someone from somewhere else who you don't really know as well. Most of the guys who've gone straight from position coach to head coach* at bigger programs have been internal promotions.

*I know Hartline is OC now but this is his first season in that job, really.

Everybody always wants a splash they perceive as guaranteed success like Saban at Alabama or Urban at OSU.

But who are they going to get? Something that isn't that!
Other than Kiffin, are there really any splash hires out there?

In addition to this, promoting Freeman internally also reduced some risks because you knew the players were in favor and he would maintain continuity with many of the good things ND’s program had going for it at the time. Promoting from outside based on perceived potential is all risk in that you neither know the person nor can see proven results in the role.

Dabo in the sense that it would make headlines, not that he’d actually be a great hire by FL, LSU or PSU.

It’s unlikely, but that roster was built to win this year, and they stink. Next year could get real ugly, and he might choose to leave voluntarily rather than wait to be pushed out. Nothing would surprise me.

Those would both be good, responsible hires for a Florida/LSU/Penn State. Matt Campbell, same. But safe and so predictable I'm not sure they really qualify as a "splash." It'd be surprising if Drinkwitz DOESN'T land in one of these jobs. He's done all he can do at Missouri.
A splash would be Florida State prying Dan Lanning out of Oregon or LSU coming away with Sarkisian. Penn State hiring Nick Sirianni. That would be a splash.

All these schools need to stop thinking “splash” hires and start thinking “smart” hires. Was Clark Lea a splash hire? Was Mike Elko? Cignetti?? How are they feeling right now? How is North Carolina feeling after the splash? I would be trying to find a Clark Lea. This is football not diving.

I think Drink is extremely overrated and I think he might be too weird personally to thrive in an intense setting like UF, LSU, or PSU. That might seem unfair or whatever, but part of what Mullen struggled with in Gainesville is that the man is just a little off, a little weird. He didn't mesh well with others in the intense bubble of Gainesville. Drink gives me those sort of vibes.

We’ve entered the perma gray portion of the year here in central Ohio. Won’t see the sun on a regular basis until April.

If this had been Freeman who hired him, the bedwetters would graduate to PhDs in pant shitting pretty fast.

Interesting fact, Arthur's dad is founder and former CEO of FedEx...Fred Smith, who passed away last year. His Net Worth was around 5 billion. Maybe a potential NIL move? Day can still call plays if he sees the need to.

I'll go with this. It doesn't seem like a football move at all.
