I think there's a big difference between promoting an "unproven" high risk/high reward type coach who has been in your program and you've watched and gotten to know as a person, vs. hiring someone from somewhere else who you don't really know as well. Most of the guys who've gone straight from position coach to head coach* at bigger programs have been internal promotions.It isn't that different, although of course Kelly wasn't fired- it's more of a gambit when you fired a guy who had usually won 10 games or whatever. High risk/high reward makes sense if you fired the low risk/low reward guy (in that respect, BK's tenure at ND was similar to Franklin's tenure at PSU).
*I know Hartline is OC now but this is his first season in that job, really.
