What about Freeman grooming someone internal like Mickens to be DC for a year. Then just find a DL or LB coach depending on the fit for Washington.
I would like this if we weren't losing both coordinators. With Tommy coming back MF could have had a pretty good focus on training up a rookie DC. Now with Tommy most likely leaving MF will need to have his hand in both O and D to some extent.

If we lose both and you’re Freeman you’ve got to be looking at Swarbrick like “wtf? You’re setting me up to fail”
How would either of these two coaching moves have anything to so with Jack? Especially if ND was willing to open their wallet to keep them. I dont understand this comment at all.

Looking at their stats last year he looks pretty good. Do not know much about him though.
In his six seasons as defensive coordinator, Wisconsin finished in top-five nationally for total defense four times. His 2021 unit ranked No. 1 nationally in total defense, allowing just 239.1 yards per game. Leonhard turned down other coaching jobs over the years, choosing instead to stay loyal to his alma mater.

Source: Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, who was Badgers' interim coach, says he won't return in 2023.

I'm OK with coordinators who aren't elite recruiters, TBH, as long as we've got Freeman and position coaches who are. I'd take Leonhardt in a minute.

We simply do not have the personnel to run Leonhard's system. Full stop.

He runs a gap-control 3-4. That's about as far away as you can get with our current personnel, and the complete antithesis of what Freeman wants in his defense.

We’ve transitioned to a 3-4 from 4-3 in the past with Diaco and had immediate success. Not that big a deal. We have the OLBs when not in nickel.

It absolutely is a big deal when the last three defensive coordinators ND has had run some variation of the 4-2-5, and have recruited exclusively for that scheme.

We simply do not have the personnel to run that defense. We were starting Howard Cross at NT last year for chrissakes. It would be a disaster.

Not sure what you’re trying to say Katz. Let’s limit our DC pool to 3-3-5 guys for eternity? If you can coach you can coach. Plenty of time to hit the portal too if a scheme change happens.

What I'm saying is that it would be a MASSIVE undertaking; it's not "snap your fingers and things get better." We have been recruiting a particular type of defense (that our current HC prefers) for the last six years. You don't just jump to an odd-front, two-gap scheme overnight.

The Diaco example doesn't work because ND stunk on defense the years leading up his hiring. There was no place to go but up.

lol is Golden being considered for Bama too? Would be funny if Saban took both

I thought Bama D coordinators have to be an absolute dawg on the trail and that ain’t Golden.

could be going on 5 DCs in 7 years right?

Correct. And the 4th system in 4 years:

2020 Clark Lea
2021 Marcus Freeman
2022 Al Golden
2023 - TBD

Anyone who doesn't think that having 2 years in the same system for the defensive players would be a good thing for Notre Dame is deluding themselves.

Notre Dame defense was pretty good and had room to be excellent next year

According to Loy, Leonhard was the 1st call last year, aka Freeman's first choice. They made him say no before moving on and eventually landing on Golden. It will probably be the same thing this year but his answer might be different considering he isn't up for the Wisconsin head coaching job anymore.

ND made Freeman say no?

I agree.

If I have the choice between Leonhard or Tony Gibson I'm taking Leonhard's accumen and image on the recruiting trail every time over Gibson just because Gibson runs the 3-3-5. Same with Heacock.

That being said, if they are going to have to go back to the well here, I think Rossi is the guy I'm leaning toward wanting to see as a fan.
