After College...

Either UC or Chase college of law. I want to stay in Cincinnati it is a really good city.

I just saw a four-story building in Over-The-Rhine, 150' from Findlay Market and 100' from the planned streetcar development....for $39,900. I nearly called them and bought it right then and there.

If Cincinnati gets this financing for the streetcar finally solved, they could find themselves with a neighborhood on par with anything in the country. It'd be like the Greenwich Village of the midwest. You'd probably have to go to Chicago or New York to find something so cool:

OTR is starting to become a decent neighborhood but still has a very poor reputation as ghetto area. It is becoming part of an urban renewal and some parts are becoming very nice yet if you turn down a wrong turn your in for a society. Cincinnati has a very good price of living and has other very good neighborhoods in the city.

Sign up for one of the Kaplan get prep courses. My brother has been working for them for awhile and they do help.

I work for Kaplan myself. We have a really really good MCAT prep class with lots of options including live online, tutoring, and sit in lecture. The big negative is we are also pretty dang pricey. I teach PCAT mostly, but I have taught MCAT as well. Any of you pre-health peeps out there need anything, pm me.

What you are paying for with Kaplan is the High Score Guarantee and the outside the class material. Lots of my students make the mistake of thinking they can sit in on two three hour lectures a week for seven weeks and ace their respective test. Not usually the case. Those that do have that ability would likely have done well without the class at all. My point being the majority of the work is put in behind the scenes, with the paper and online material. Class is for fine tuning and reinforcement.

Side note- I'm graduating myself this June, from pharmacy school. Plan on working partime with Walgreens and have a sweet pain management consulting gig lined up with a workman's comp PBM.

What's the catch with it? $39M is well below the going sqft rate for that area?

Some of you need to get real with your after graduation dreams. That, or prepare yourself for disapoinent. There is nothing wrong with reaching for the stars, but if you go for it, go all in. Otherwise it will be nothing more than tinkering with a childish dream.

I have quite a few friends that have done the Edwards Jones gig. They unilaterally think it sucks worse than a huge bag of donkey balls.

Stay in school as long as possible.

Do not go to law school. Dont do it. If you do (again do not) at least go to whatever school is the cheapest option and take on as little debt as possible, but better yet do not go to law school.

Tucker Max: Why You Should Not Go to Law School

This sight is somewhat depressing with not good job prospects. But, as far as being a lawyer, I have planned on being a lawyer for about 5 years now. I have studied latin and greek and am currently a philosophy major. I read boring documents for dinner and spend my nights in a library (which I plan on doing next year as well. I know its a really good way to meet a woman). I rewrote a constitution for my SGA at school as well. I have also been on high importance disciplinary cases where I have kicked people out of Xavier based on evidence. I know what it takes to be a lawyer. I am going for two state schools so it wont be too expensive. I have also told friends that an inkling about being a lawyer not to do it if they even had a doubt. I completely get what you are saying. But I also generally know the pain I am getting myself into.

Ok good luck to you then. Law school is not a good idea for the majority of people but if you know what you are getting yourself into and want to do it go for it. I would recommend you also talk to a few prosecutors and sit for a day in misdemeanor level court room if you have not done so.

I have done so, being politically connected has allowed me to know both judges and prosecutors in Hamilton County and they have also suggested I do this. You are spot on about law school in general though. Way to many people go in expecting to do things and enjoy themselves.

Tucker Max: Why You Should Not Go to Law School

I'll echo the stay away from law school statement.

What if you want to be a lawyer?

Then you're probably mistaken haha. In all honesty, then be damn sure that you really want it and go some place cheap or where you know you will be happy. And I don't mean happy with the academics, I mean happy with life in general. Law school can throw you into depression so go somewhere that provides plenty of outlets from law school.

Speaking Up: Helping Law Students Break Through the Silence of Depression - ABA Journal

The statistics on law student depression merit concern. Law professor Larry Krieger of Florida State University studies how the law school experience affects students’ mental health. He has reported that between 20 and 40 percent of law students suffer from clinical depression by the time they graduate; that the incidence of clinically elevated anxiety, hostility and depression among students is eight to 15 times that of the general population; and that, out of 104 occupational groups, lawyers rank the highest in depression and fifth in incidence of suicide.

Don't say "urban renewal" ever ever ever ever ever hahaha it's actually a real policy tgat lasted from 1949-1973, and had disastrous consequences. It sounds nice, like No Child Left Behind, but was a disaster. We've done a complete 180 since then.

But yeah I know what you. It's all progreas though. Twenty years ago great neighborhoods in Columbus (Short North, German Village) were ghettos too. Now they're a million dollars a house!

Well im sure the building would need serious rehab. Structural integrity would be the only worry in that case. The catch was that the Baptist Church on the corner owned the whole block and is moving to the suburbs and selling all nine parcels to get cash quickly. I called the realtor and, of course, the dominant development corp swooped in and bought them all up. Its too bad, it was a homerun price. :(

To all the recent college grads with high ambitions....most of you will fail. Your dreams are just that. You will have a mediocre life and never find a job that pays well and is also enjoyable. Just sayin....

Unfortunately, you're about right. My advice to new grads would be to win the lottery or marry a very rich woman. It's makes those post grad years so much easier. I never had any luck with either, but I hear it's great! lol

Graduating in May with my journalism degree from Northern Kentucky University (I promise that as a sports fan first, I will not turn into the rapid-fire, no-research douche journalist that everyone hates, I respect sports too much for that).

I've worked in the campus library as a student worker for 5 years, and just applied for a professional position in the library. If I somehow land that, it would give me a few years of steady income to figure something out in the professional world of journalism.

Might even go to grad school for english, but I'm undecided.

So 90% of the graduating students on this site plan on being sports journalists?

I hope you know some of you sounds like total dicks even though some of it is just you trying to be honest.

I really doubt that anyone on here thinks that whatever their dream is it is going to be easy to accomplish.

The whole point of this thread is to find out what people hope to do. They come in here with their dream...

and_its_gone_original.jpg

You're pretty much just telling them that they're dream is stupid. So **** off. I'll take the dreamer over the pessimistic prick everyday of the week.

THANK YOU.

Sorry ya'll didn't live up to your dreams or goals or whatever. But when I have multiple people in the industry that I want to go into telling me what to expect the first 1, 2, 5 years, and they are people I've know for 10+ years? I think I have a decent handle on it.

Or just work till the inheritance kicks in... lol

I don't think Beau was referring to you. There isn't anyone telling you that you shouldn't reach for your dreams of being a financial advisor at Edward Jones in this thread as far as I know. That is actually a pretty realistic outlook on post graduation employment.

I think he was pointing out more of the general posts of people telling those in this thread that we will most likely fail, and not reach our goals.

But to answer the question. I will graduate in December with a BS in City & Regional Planning. I want to get into urban planning and see what I can get done (save the world!) and perhaps get into public administration.

There's a lot of work to be done. We basically did everything wrong from 1945-1990, but funds and public support are a different story. It's difficult to get people to understand that their simple cul-de-sac is destroying their city and that their moving to the suburbs is expediting the downfall of the region... sad faces

I highly suggest some of you join the military after you graduate. Officer or enlisted, doesn't matter.

You will be able to use the GI Bill to pay for any post secondary education you want not to mention the job training you will get for whichever job you choose (I recommend intelligence; you get a great clearance).

I also believe the services offer Student Loan Repayment Plans but I would double check. You also can use tuition assistance during your active duty that doesn't come out of the 9/11 GI BIll.

Something I would think about for some of you that can't find anything.
