Crazy to LOOK outside the Top 50? Yes
To bring in Bettis' son? No
Bring both Bettis/Burress in the class? Nuts

NIL shouldn't have anything to do with those guys individually so not sure that's even relevant. NFL bloodlines is cool but these days does it really move the needle? (especially if the looked mediocre at the Prep level??

When those guys are essentially your “set a decent floor at least” prospects, and you spend the rest of the cycle hunting bigger game, I think that’s a pretty fucking smart strategy, especially when the big dogs aren’t on the timeline you’d prefer.

Take the class fillers early, then get one or two blue chip guys.

If you can’t, you go poach a junior/senior again next offseason (which you might do anyway).

NIL allows you to take flyers on two kids with huge connections, especially when it doesn’t mean your whole class has been shut down.

Crazy to look outside the top 50 WRs? Seriously? Maybe I’m just misinterpreting but I feel like this is a recipe for failure.

If we just want a minimum of 2-3 WRs in a given class, and so do the other top-25 schools… how does this math work out for ND if we only look to the top 50? Let alone also considering the possibility of kids in the top-50 being pulled by non-top25 home schools (Stanford, Duke, etc)

Restricting our net to top-50 sounds like a great recipe for signing a depleted WR class.

Sometimes you have to take a few easy signs instead of just putting all of your eggs in the high competition basket.

Top 50 wrs … without their last name they’re not even top 250 wrs

That’s the issue, their ranking and few offers are inflated due to last name. They didn’t have to do anything to get noticed but say who their father was. And they haven’t done much at all at prep level. Theta why they were sought after by any big boys

The most likely replacement for me is penson. I am surprised that no one is talking about it

We've went that route several times since Weis left and it's hardly ever worked is the problem. Understandably alot of the Top 3-5 WRs will wait and soak up the attention but a schools Top 5 list is different and getting one of those guys early is alot better strategy as opposed to playing the portal game.

Trying to think of how many lightly regarded WRs we got to set the floor have worked out since Weis.

  1. Will Fuller (became a four-star and absolutely worked out
  2. Chris Brown (sort of?)
  3. Corey Robinson (became a four-star and was a fine player)
  4. Jalen Guyton (worked out, but not for ND)
  5. Kevin Stepherson (worked out, but only until he went full Florida)
  6. Michael Young (was an OK player, just not for ND)
  7. Lawrence Keys (but an OK player, just not for ND)
  8. Cam Hart (All-American, but not at WR)
  9. Xavier Watts (All-American, but not at WR)

Am I forgetting any bottom of the class WRs who worked out somewhere or at some position?

ND has taken a lot of lower ranked WRs who didn’t work, and the ones that did have done it somewhere else. I’d rather take a portal kid than bottom of the class kids you hope beat the odds. Receivers are a dime a dozen in the portal - we took kids from FIU and Marshall so we know it can’t be hard to get grads with college production into school.

Of course the highly ranked ones they got seemed to fart out too. Receiver recruiting has been so weird for a long time.

You are forgetting maybe the best of them all Faison whose going to play in the NFL one day.

Yep, you could compile a list of our higher-rated WRs and it would look fairly similar in outcomes. WR recruiting/development has been pretty much a total crapshoot since the days of Tate and Floyd.

Top 350/4* players wouldn't be considered lowly regarded as quite a few of these guys were at the time. As compared to guys in the 500s-700s/low 3* range, now see how many guys in that range have contributed any if at all.

This guy isn't actively being recruited anymore and ND is going after some big time targets. Seems like a lot of conversation happening in a recruits thread that could be in the 25 class recruiting thread.

Do you really think it’s crazy that ND offered two kids with NFL bloodlines in the NIL era, one of which is a school legend, or are you just wording it that way to be a dick
As a fan I really enjoy going to a game and seeing people like David Robinson and even Tori Hunter.

Actually with Putup on this one...

I'd push back a bit on Canada's assertion they he's strictly a slot. He's probably around Faison's size and Denbrock has mentioned him getting reps at field. Slot sized kids can be utilized a lot easier since Denbrock utilizes so much motion.

Not to mention he's a plus talent as a return man. Seemed like AA potential as a PR.

Now go out and land three from Meadows, Robinson, Hines and Taylor and I'm good... but Terry's film was better that Buress, imo.

Hearing some of the backstory on Terry looking around and the recommitment makes more sense.

We're gonna have to hit some dingers during these wr official visits or hope the offense shows out and flip some guys later in the cycle. The latter seems more probable based on the chatter from the talking heads.

Simply goes back to MFs MF rule about no commit being allowed to take "official" visits, thing is I heard his Mizzou visit was an "unoffical". Guess the rule is no visits PERIOD!! I like the rule as you should do your due diligence before committing, and unless something like a coaching change, family hardship etc happens honor your commitment young men.

Not to beat a dead horse but we might've screwed this one up.

Kid is dominating the state title game.

Reminds me of Jordan Faison.

2 TDs including a one where he hurdled a guy on a jailbreak screen.

Yeah well our staff isn’t good at judging WR recruiting kinda baffling

I mean, it's not like any of the three ND landed had bad years. Burress dominated in some of the toughest comp in the country, Scrap is an uber athlete and even Bettis balled out this year against some more of the best comp.

Still would be nice to have him as the 4th.

No, he's not a defensive player due to size, but he was absolutely a take as a returner/slot/gadget.

No idea why they didn’t take him espically with the scholarship increase
