The scuttlebutt on r/cfb was that Scar and Clemson don't go after Hilton Head kids because their coach actively steers them to go out of state. Not sure if that's true, but the high school coach did seem to be actively involved in Sneed's recruitment so it wouldn't shock me.

I find this interesting as I have never heard of this nor do I think I would have. Outside of the resorts, HH is a very rural place. I mean very rural but its also in a kind of black hole for College football to. Not too many good players come out of that area. HH is populated by retirees from out of state as well so its not totally implausible the coach or educators woul want the local populace to get out of there.

Fair point, but it seems strange for Venables to say this when Clemson's linebacking corps last year were all 5-10 to 6-2 guys weighing in around 215-230 lbs, other than Skalski who was their Mike thumper. Maybe he doesn't see Sneed as someone who can add anymore weight, but Sneed wouldn't exactly be a huge outlier.
Venables is yesterday;Freeman is today.

Figured I'd drop this quote from his coach as I know people have mentioned some hints from his AD that makes it sound like he's a camp guy and not a pads-on guy: "On the field, he's the most violent player I've seen him in 19 years as a coach or opposing player." https://irishsportsdaily.com/s/1541...-commit-jaylen-sneed-found-fit-with-freeman/1

For reference, it was not his AD, it was a local AD speaking for himself and some others locally. Didn’t really think it was worth too much attention just one of a few guys opinions.

Helluva pickup for ND; another Jaylen at LB for ND, and he will be a stud.

To be honest when there was talk about ND going after him, I thought we had no chance with him and if Clemson offered that's where he would go.

Kudos to this staff for the work they are putting in on the recruiting side. The LB position is looking good.

Just trying to downplay the fact they lost a 5*. Rationalizing it with what ever excuse they prefer.
1. Not big enough
2. Too big to play the position
3. We have too many already
4. Not as good as the film shows
5. Overrated
6. We're really pursuing him

247 increased his rating from a 93 to 94, 4 star. But apparently relative to his peers he’s not quite as good as before as they moved him down from 97 to 100th overall.

Hadn't they stated that he was almost guaranteed to bump to at or near five star status or was that rivals?

247 guy that does the ranking said they have Sneed where he is and not higher because “he has been to five events in the last year or last 12 to 14 months, and his speed and agility testing has been scratched in every single one…..If you go down the list of the 10 in front of him…the majority have some verified data, whether publicly or behind the scenes.”

Hmmmm, that is a bit of a mystery…….the obvious thought that crosses my mind is that the test numbers were below par by someone’s definition but I wonder if maybe there is another angle. He certainly appears agile and quick in the video clips we are able to see.

That thread, or two, was a lot of fun. Loy followed that up with another eval from Brooks on Walker.

For once I’m completely on board with the meltdown the 247 board is having over this. What a joke.

The evals have little to no actual film eval, talk about movement skills, observed strengths and weaknesses, position/scheme fit, etc. Loy gave this guy a verbal blow job to their board and it was an epic fail. Well deserved criticism, IMO.

That he scratched his times from the events. It is kind of odd but to do an eval of a player where this is so much more important that he couldn’t even attempt to evaluate what he has seen is pathetic.

From the two evals it seems to me like this Gabe Brooks guy is going to be more about analytics than talent scout.

Sure it's weird he hid his times but there's too many guys who are great football players with poor combine type numbers.

You can watch him run with RBs and WRs in one on ones to know he's fast.

This just comes off as "taking my ball and going home" from some grown men because they can't see a kids 40.

And you have guys who test way better than they play (Redfield) This is why rankings don't bother me much one way or the other. It can't take into consideration how fast a player mentally processes what he sees and reacts. Field awareness is as important as anything. Film is an indicator, but there's no substitute for seeing someone in person. I have no idea why he scratched from those tests, but he probably had a good reason.
