One thing from the rumors thread was that Payne > Diggs with how they were practicing this spring. Explosive player and good in the passing game... people expect him to compliment Estime very well.
That subject was brought up elsewhere & the source (ND staff) said Diggs was checked out and putting little effort into practice, so everyone looked better. But when Diggs was full go he was the best all around RB on the roster. And not surprising a player would downplay Diggs because he wasn’t friends with too many other players.

So it sounds like Diggs, who almost left 3 times before he actually did leave, was a gamer, but not all in at practice.

IMO...
Diggs had a high floor, but not a particularly high ceiling.
Payne has a lower floor, but maybe a slightly higher ceiling.

So I would have rather Diggs stayed, but I would not be surprised at all if the position is much improved this year anyway, because:

'23 Estime > '22 RB1
'23 Payne = '22 RB2 (remember that neither Diggs or Estime had a great start in '22)
'23 Love/Ford/Price > '22 Tyree (did not live up to potential)

I thought Payne’s running style looked almost identical to Diggs in the Spring Game. He might be smaller and a little less run-through-contact, but maybe a liiiiiittle more juice in the open field.

Same here. I don't see Payne having that "run-thru" capability that Diggs had/has.

That part was never said.

I think ND can play Payne as a hybrid player on offense and has the speed that Diggs doesn't have.

I've been kind of surprised at the number of times that ND has used Payne to run in 3rd and short situations. Several times it was Estime coming off the field to make way for Payne. It appears that the staff pretty much trusts Estime and Payne fairly equally in that regard.

Watch this guy in pass pro, blocking downfield, whenever he's off the ball. He does the important things that don't show up on stat sheets.

Absolutely applaud this guy's effort.

Dang. It may end up okay for ND though when Price gets drafted at the end of this season. Then its Love, Payne and the young fellas in 2025.

This is unfortunate for Payne but good thing we have plenty to work with in this room.
