Can someone give a little more background on Payne and why we haven’t heard a ton about him yet? (in fairness, it might be out there, I don’t sub to any of the pay sites anymore). Seems the chatter is going big game hunting for the 2nd back. Names like Singleton and Sawchuck come up often.

But he’s a consensus top-200 back who put us in his top 5..

Initial guess would be he doesn’t talk to the media. His 247 timeline which posts offers and such has a huge time gap while his top 5 article on 247 is not a real interview. Had to go back to November to find a resemblance of talking to a reporter and still wasn’t much

It sounds like he’s a Tier 2 guy behind the big 3. I think that’s also probably the case with at least one other in his Top 5. He’s got a smart top 5 too, IMO. Bama/ND, UF/PSU, and then NW. And when I say smart I mean giving himself a diverse group of options. 3 different tiers of football programs, within those a mix of academics and geography. If ND fills up and he wants academics he’ll go NW. If Bama says no and he wants to play in the south, then UF.

With NW in the group, it gives some indication that he is somewhat serious about the academics.

I read that 6/23 article. This is a total guess but I bet he makes some late July visits. There’s that one week to do visits and then the next chance is fall. They’ve said he’s only been to Northwestern.

Alabama - .9842 5* Emmanuel Henderson & .9648 4* Le’Veon Moss

Florida - .9255 4* Terrance Gibbs heavy UF lean

Northwestern - VISITED. No other RB’s committed

Notre Dame - .9141 4* Jadarian Price

Penn State - .9578 4* Nicholas Singleton heavy PSU lean

This obviously the case where Gi’Bran was the plan B at multiple schools. I definitely know he’s a top top target for Northwestern. I’m pretty doubtful that Alabama is really in the picture (I know Le’Veon Moss is looking around). It’s definitely a tricky situation where do you go all in on Gi’Bran and get him possibly or do you try and flip Singleton. If they got Gi’Bran I don’t think Singleton is coming as a 3rd RB commit so it’s tricky. I’d honestly go all in on Gi’Bran and try to get him. If Singleton commits to Penn State today then I’m pretty skeptical he flips to ND (unless maybe Franklin is fired but that’s not gonna happen). He’s already had such in-depth looks into both schools and I don’t think he’ll flip flop now after he’s made his decision. Gi’Bran is definitely a step behind the big 3 but he’s still really good and I think with a healthy season he’d turn some heads with his play!

Posted this in Singelton s thread but Kaytron Allen got a PSU CB a few days ago so I think PSU is taking another two back class. They wanted Omarion Hampton before Singelton too. We will see how this plays into it as well.

Basing this strictly on what I see in his highlights and the NU offer, I'd love to see ND dig in here if they are looking for a second back in the class. Hell, even an offer from Michigan State and Wisconsin still counts for something.

The Catholic HS in Cincinnati angle surely helps the segment of the fanbase that places priority on that, too.

Nice player.

He’s a good prospect and one I could see being very productive at a place like NU. But, I’m up in the air on adding a 2nd RB. Some questions that I don’t have answers too on whether a 2nd back is necessary.

If they go with a 2nd, I’d be very pleased with his addition. If they chose to allocate that scholarship somewhere else, then I get that as well. 2nd RB would seem to fall in the BPA category and I’d like to see some fall games before we fill too many of those spots.

Agreed. I'd rather have another DB or WR first.

I agree as well, Singleton or nothing. Jadarian Price is a great pickup. Save the spots, something we haven’t always had the liberty to do.

I think if Payne has a big senior year and stays healthy they can go after him but they have the luxury of being in wait and see mode.

The concerning thing is that we very likely could only have 4 scholarship RB's for 2022 (Tyree, Estime, Diggs, Price). There's no guarantee that C'Bo will stay buried on the depth chart for a 5th year. Only having 4 is a bit dicey.

New world in transfers though. Already have GT's + ND will be forced to make some changes to the undergrad transfer policy to take advantage of it in some fashion.

That’s a good point, maybe I’m shooting from the hip a little. Given the current track record it’s probably a good idea to take a quality back. I doubt ND would have as much success pulling in a good RB from the transfer portal. So what is the acceptable number? 5? 7? Does ND pursue him and Singleton? I can’t see the staff not leaving the door open for NS. At the same time (though he’s a kid) does GB leave the door open for ND? I think under the circumstances you mentioned GB can’t be considered a plan B if we expect to have a legitimate chance at landing him.

I have no idea of how to assess film highlights. Can anyone explain what makes Gi'Bran Payne a better prospect than Dareion Murphy? Because i think Murph is a steal.

Whether you have him as a take or a wait and see, I think you've got to be in ABC mode all the time. Otherwise you risk losing them if you try and circle back later.

Go Hoosiers! I'm a Notre Dame guy, but I like where Coach Allen has his program heading. I am a Hoosier so forgive me. Lol

Allen has really ramped up the recruiting. Not sure what changes he's made, but they appear to be paying dividends. When was the last time the Hoosiers beat scUM two years in a row?

Tom Allen is very quietly putting together a really nice class down in Bloomington.
