Considering his mother just died less than a year ago, I'm going to hold off on my own judgement. Frankly, what I think doesn't really mean a fuck regardless of his reasons.

I was rooting for this guy this year. Hope he does well for himself down the line wherever he ends up, whatever his reasons might be.
I'll try to give him grace because of mom too. But I don't see the point in this from a football perspective. It's not like he doesn't get to play.

Likely sees that he is not in the pecking order to be a starter next year. He could go through spring practice and see at that time, but with the new transfer portal rules only allowing one transfer period in the Winter, he likely felt he had to make a decision now.

One of Golden / Zackery is going to step up and provide meaningful minutes, they are too talented not to. Probably still need a veteran body even if Moore is the real deal.

Driskell is insinuating on the IB boards that this is the result of him getting beat out and losing reps to younger guys.

Cree Thomas will surprise people too but I wouldn't be surprised if they bring in another Corner for 2025 as well.

BD really going out on a limb there

Part of me says this is a smart move for Mickey the individual - preserve that extra year. Plus who knows what's going on wrt his personal life as well.

The rest of me says finish what you start and fuck anyone who goes into business for themselves over the team. The time to make this move was BEFORE the season, preferably before fall camp. Now he's just screwing over his teammates.

So needless to say, I'm conflicted on this news.

I think he has this in mind before the season began. Never know what injuries can happen but he’s been getting good coaching and doubt he would have received better support for his family tragedy elsewhere. He got some national TV exposure for his sad situation and that wasn’t going to happen anywhere else. If he stayed he might have been able to get his masters as his education and network will be more important in five years than a couple of years playing CB at Pitt if he gets to a school that good.

Can anyone provide some insight on how our portal transfer outs have done the last several years? How’s Tobias doing at Cal? I know Rick has caught a few passes on a terrible UCLA team.

Gray, Moore and Hobbs is a solid top three, as long as Hobbs keeps progressing.

He's that tall, lanky corner that Mickens loves, and will be a thorn in opposing teams' sides for a while. They're gonna avoid Gray and Moore, and think they can find a matchup against Hobbs.... then the 6'1" corner that's been coached up by the best CB coach in the country is going to eliminate even the smallest passing window that you thought you could find.

Good luck to Mickey, though. Kid is always like a fingertip away from making an amazing play, and seems to ALWAYS been on the receiver's hip in coverage. Would be surprised if he doesn't find a good spot and play well.

Assuming this is a football decision this is a major mistake by him. Will still probably make it to the NFL but quitting mid season to preserve a year of eligibility is nonsensical.
I have never seen NFL talent there, probably why a freshman passes him up every year.

Getting passed up by a Generational CB in Benjamin Morrison and a potential top 3 round CB in Gray doesn't mean you don't have NFL talent. And even if you don't have NFL talent, he is good enough to start for a P4 team and live closer to his family that has been through tragedy.

Having so much depth is a good thing to have
There is not much depth there in 2024. With Tucker (injured) and now Mickey out they are paper thin at corner on the depth chart now. One injury could mean disaster. Benmo - Gray backed up by the two freshman...and I guess Rod Heard in an emergency. That's not ideal.

You are 100% correct. This comes down to him being able to start for two years but most importantly be closer to his family with an ND degree in hand. Best of luck to Jaden Mickey. He will always have that pick 6 against Pitt.

Moreso than the coaching staff or us message board heroes I always wonder what the teammates think of a move like this. I'm sure it's complicated.

It sucks because I can see the player side of it (getting beat out) and wanting to look out for you when you're upset.. but from a fan side it sucks but his decision is up to him and he gets to live with it however they choose

From the Hamilton/Hart podcast I got the impression that players are very understanding. I remember a lot of "well, they got to look out for them" being an attitude applied to a lot of topics.
