Man, this whole thing is a see-saw of emotions. I flip back and forth between thinking we have the inside track or that it’s a forgone conclusion that he’s going to Clemson. Take this morning, I’d been buying into all the good vibes coming from the ND writers, then saw he was doing that Q and A and I’m thinking we got a 70% shot here. Then I see the stuff about Anna Hickey saying he’s a silent to Clemson and Wiltfong saying the way Shipley conducts himself makes everyone feel like they have a good shot. Now, I’m feeling like it’s a pipe dream. I’m trying to not get too invested or too high or too low, but being stuck inside and not having any other sports going on has gotten me overly invested in this recruitment

Wiltfong spent about 5 minutes yesterday discussing Shipley on a North Carolina Podcast. Starts around the 36:30 mark. Main takeaway was that Wiltfong thought it was Clemson a week ago but hasn't dug much the past week. Thinks a lot of Shipley and how he communicates. Very outgoing and gives colleges a lot of time, leaves all the colleges thinking that they have a good chance. Said something along the lines of ..... If you talked to Duke, they probably think they have a good chance, and maybe they do. Certainly doesn't have anything concrete at this point.

See now I know Anna and Steve have the same source on this and Toms is different. I’m glad Wong said this because I thought he was getting third party info.

Question is which one is correct

Will and Blake's IG Live segment seemed to have gone well. I gave it a listen at ISD.

Sounds like there was interaction from current players and recruits.

I only caught the last ~2 minutes. And I'm probably reading too much into it, but at the very end Blake signs off with something like, "Go Irish, y'all" and you could see Will hesitate for a moment, like he almost said it but somwthibg held him back. Honestly, if he's thinking Notre Dame at this point, I don't see why he would have held back from an innocent go Irish on an Irish live cast. Makes me think this kid is still leaning Clemson, understandably so.

So please explain why he going to Clemson is understandably?

1) Significant inferior education and career opportunity
2) Significant less play time (they already have a 5 and 4 star signed, much less prior classes)

What is so great about being a backup RB on a team that was in the playoffs? Go there for the weather? If that is the case, he should go to a FL school.

If being close to home was that appealing, no kid would ever go anywhere but their state school, much less across the country like they do all the time.

Before Dabo, Clemson was not even anywhere on the map except S Carolinas annual punching bag. After Lawrence leaves this year, you wont see them ruling the roost.

Because they're the best program in college football during the playoff era. That's it.

I understand your arguments about why ND seems like the logical better choice, but kids don't put the same weight on all of that stuff that you or I might.

Clemson is close to home, Dabo has created probably the most player-friendly atmosphere in the country (not even accounting for 'extra benefits'), they are as good at player development as ND, and putting guys into the pros at a higher rate.

Combine all that with big-game performances to show for it, and it's understandable that a guy like Shipley would be favoring the best overall program in college football*.

*You could make an argument that Bama is still the top dog, but Clemson has greater success more recently, so I'd consider them no.1 over Bama, who is an extremely close no.2

Bamas schedule is far better than Clemson year in, year out. Im not a fan of the SEC schedule but there are quite a few better teams in the SEC then the ACC every year. The SEC #2,3,4 are much better than the ACC #2,3,4

I guess it is a wait and see if this kid is as good as advertised. I hope for his sake he is or else he will have a long career holding a clipboard as a backup at Clemson.

vs not being as good as advertised but still playing sparingly at ND?

I agree with your point here, but I thought the argument was whether it’s understandable to choose Clemson over ND. I believe you have helped us conclude that it’s understandable for a recruit to think: Alabama => Clemson >>> Notre Dame in many areas, to which I again have to agree unfortunately.

I wouldn't even factor education into it. All kids say education is important, but how many actually end up picking the school because one is much better academically?

He did say he would like to be the man, so that is a drawing card for our lads as he'll probably see the field earlier and more often.

Maybe because they are getting more 4 & 5 star kids?

This is true, but take a look at a few of the key cogs to last year's defense.

Isaiah Simmons - 0.8746
Tanner Muse - 0.8574
James Skalski - 0.8569
K'Von Wallace - 0.8243
Nolan Turner - UR Walkon

And Clemson smokes Alabama... Aging coach vs younger hip coach that dances with his kids like he means it. And bagmen.

I bet he plays Fortnite and talks with them about girls and stuff, too.

Man, Brian Kelly is such a lame dad! Why can't we have a cool dad like Swabo Dinney?

Come on now...

You'd trade that Mercedes E Class in for the Ferarri F8 Tributo everyday of the week.

And remember, our E-Class is not an AMG and it only has a 6.

If you'd trade Kelly for Swinney because the latter is a better coach, then make that argument. Not because "he dances with his kids like he means it."

Gimme a f*cking break... That's got Irish Inferiority Complex™ written all over it.

Ha? Swinney recruits better than Kelly. Way better. That's fact.

Ah man idk, even if Kelly is better at coaching football, Swinney is undoubtedly better at running a program. Could he work with ND's restrictions? I couldn't say, but let's not just attribute that to Irish Inferiority Complex, when ND repeatedly drops the ball on getting in on recruits.

Where did I say that Kelly is a better coach? Phork pining after Dabo's "dancing with his kids like he means it" nearly made my eyeballs roll out of my head.

I don't know that Dabo is a better coach or the fact that he recruits better.....I will say with certainty that Dabo and his staff certainly finds talent better than anyone in the country. He takes just as many 3* as ND if not more, bit manages to turn them into All Americans.

There'll be no arguing. That's my statement. I trade BK right now for Dabo.

I think Ohio State is right there with Clemson in finding those 3* that become day 1 and day 2 picks in the NFL draft.

Great. But if your main reason for making that trade is because you want a "hip" coach with creepy Youth Pastor vibes, then I reserve the right to mock you mercilessly.

I know Simmons but who are the others?

Does BK get credit for Hamilton who was a 3 star when they recruited him and he signed and he will be better than Simmons.

Swinney brings the kids in and wins. So yes I'd take the trade.

Whiskey,

It's all about the W's for me. As a Subway, it's all I have to really worry about.

I know you guys have to do all the heavy ethical lifting.

We then live with yall's decisions.

Wasn't trying to make a point about the moral superiority of ND or anything. I just get annoyed when someone implies we need shtick--Row the Boat, dancing in the locker room, texting with croots, etc.--to win again. None of that shit really matters.

It was my fault for reading an implicit criticism of Kelly into the line about "dancing with his kids like he means it". No rational ND fan would take Kelly's record over Swinney's. Guess I'm just grumpy today. Sorry for derailing the thread.

On behalf of the board... apology accepted. You will bring much more to the discussion tomorrow, or maybe after a few good drinks of Woodford. I believe in you

I know you weren't. As a Subway, I like wins BUT I understand the ethical part of the equation is VERY important to the folks that have the paper on the wall. I will always defer to that. I'm not giving directions, I'm happy to be in the back seat of the 15-passenger van that is ND football.

That said, I think Dabo would be a home run hire on the field. His compatibility off the field is above my pay grade.
