Seems like congratulations might be in order soon for Buchner to you guys. It’d be big for ND to get their #2 QB (Preston Stone unrealistic #1), I will be finding other teams to discuss for awhile. It’s ok, guys have different preferences than my guys but I don’t like the way JJ was led on. After how a already declared Love was treated I’m over the Brian Kelly regime. As a life long ND fanatic it’s a tough spot, I’ll come back around when we hire a man of character. Best of luck to all and God bless!

Not cool at all to drop a bomb, or at least a very loud firecracker, and not provide details. There are guys connected to the program who don't know what you are talking about. Kelly obviously is never going to be happy to lose guys who haven't graduated, yet. He wants his players to get their degree first but I can't imagine him treating a player unfairly just because he declared for the draft.

This will be a contentious conversation for a long period of time. It won’t change tomorrow, or the day after that. There are talented players in the game and we chose this one.

It’s pretty exciting that we got our guy. And that’s what should matter. We got our guy.

I just hope they can now get the talent around Buchner at the skill positions. Going to make his job a lot easier

Wimbush obviously didn't quite live up to the potential many saw. Buchner has the tools to be the best college QB ND has had in a lonnnnnnnng time... if he makes it to the finish line and signs with ND. He has almost unlimited upside at the college level given his athleticism and arm talent.

And doesn't transfer when he's not starting as a freshman, flunk out, get caught in some minor cheating "scandal" or fall victim to the California Curse. Lot of road to hoe between now and a Heisman.

But, nah. This is great. Good job. Go Irish.

Whoa. I hope you're right. But whoa.

We all know how great Clausen was. But if you got to see him in person, it takes it to a whole new level of how easy he made the game for WRs. I watched him 3x in person, and everytime I left thinking it was incredible how the WRs never had to adjust or move to the ball. It was like he was playing laser tag and just pointed the gun and the WRs magically had the ball without breaking stride. It was something else.

I saw two games of his live and it really was remarkable. I'm still confused how he didn't have a better NFL career. He had all the accuracy in the world.

I'm firmly of the belief that if he would've been drafted by a better organization, his story would've played out differently. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Good article from the South Bend Tribune this morning.

Last month's trip to Notre Dame confirmed Tyler Buchner’s hunch.

The 2021 quarterback dissected film alongside Irish offensive coordinator Chip Long and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees. By demonstrating how Buchner translated into ND’s offense, the Irish staff verified his intuition.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pounder from The Bishop's School in La Jolla, Calif., returned the favor on Friday, announcing his verbal commitment to the Irish via Twitter. He becomes ND’s first committed recruit for its 2021 class.

“Their offense is super-aggressive, and I think it’s the perfect fit,” Buchner told the Tribune following his Feb. 23 visit. “It’s similar to what I run at my high school. It’s just an extension of that. Perfect fit … They have compared my game to Ian Book, which is kind of generous. I mean, I guess I’m all right. But I can definitely see myself playing that scheme.”

In the Brian Kelly Era, no quarterback has committed to the Irish earlier in the recruiting process. Quarterbacks Phil Jurkovec (2018 class), Cade McNamara (2019 class) and Drew Pyne (2020 class) are the only other gunslingers to commit to ND before their junior seasons.

Perhaps Buchner’s biggest Irish influence came via Bishop's School alum Shane Walton. The former Notre Dame All-America cornerback (2002) serves as The Bishop’s School’s defensive coordinator and assistant athletic director. How do the Knight and Irish offenses compare?

“It’s the exact same offense,” Walton said. “Tyler has the keys. Coach might call a play, but Tyler can change the play to 15 or 20 different things based on what the defense is giving us. He always puts us in the right call. It’s impressive. He knows the game so well."

An impressive freshman campaign and offseason camps helped Buchner become a four-star recruit per 247Sports. He ranks as the site’s No. 2 pro-style quarterback and No. 49 overall player. On the first series of Buchner’s sophomore season, though, he tore the ACL in his left knee.

Tom Lemming, a recruiting analyst for CBS Sports Network, saw enough of Buchner to consider him as a player with five-star potential.

“I saw a terrific ballplayer with coolness under pressure,” Lemming said. “He has the arm strength. He seemed like a 16-year-old going on 30. He’s not a guy who can run a 4.5 (40-yard dash), but he’s one that can run you out of trouble. He’s good throwing the ball on the run.

“He’s effective with his reads, going through his progressions well first. Then when he decides that no one is open, he can buy time and extend the play because of his foot speed and ability to avoid the rush.”

Before suffering the injury, Buchner emerged as one of the elite quarterbacks in his class. He accrued offers from Michigan, Alabama, USC, Georgia and Oregon. The Trojans even sent a coach to watch Buchner practice last summer.

The USC coach lasted one throw before leaving.

“He said, ‘I’ve seen enough. I don’t need to see anymore,’ ” Walton said.

USC offered Buchner a scholarship on May 29. He then attended ND’s Elite Skills Camp in June and landed an Irish offer. Buchner attended ND’s Sept. 29 home game against Stanford. When Buchner returned to South Bend last month, the Irish staff replayed the 38-17 Irish victory over the Cardinal on televisions throughout their facilities.

ND quarterbacks Ian Book and Phil Jurkovec also spent time with Buchner on his last visit. The three joined ND linebacker Jordan Genmark Heath — from nearby San Diego — Rees, his father and ND director of scouting, Bill Rees, at Rocco’s Restaurant, a local pizza eatery.

"Like Ian Book, he finds the right guy," said Walton of Buchner, who also wears No. 12. "The easiest pass is the right pass, and that’s what Ian Book does. And the same thing happens with Tyler. What I will say is the difference is I think Tyler is a little bit bigger in stature. I think his arm is a little bit better than Ian’s.

"Obviously, it’s a different game. Ian is in college. But I think with Tyler, just the way he throws the ball is just a different ball. It’s effortless. The way he throws the ball is just different.”

The Irish threw all they had at Buchner, who stands as one of ND’s two 2021 quarterback targets. The other, Dallas product Preston Stone, has not visited South Bend. Other top 2021 quarterback prospects, like Midwest recruit J.J. McCarthy, never garnered an offer because of ND’s interest in Buchner.

Buchner will continue physical therapy for the next couple months, he said. He’s eyeing May 11 for his return to competition through Oakland’s regional Elite 11 quarterback camp.

“School starts at 8:30 a.m. I got there at 7:30 the other day, and he had just finished working out,” Walton said. “That’s who he is. He loves football. When he hurt his knee, I was the first person out there.

"He knew he hurt it bad, but it wasn’t about him. He said, ‘I just want to play football with my teammates.’ That’s what he said. It’s not about him. It’s about his team.

“I’ve never seen a guy be great at everything. He’s great at his touch passes. He’s great at the deep ball. He’s great at finding the open guy. He’s great at getting the offense into the right play. He’s great at running. He can run over you. He can run by you. He can juke you.

"He’s the best at all of it.”

Always like an early commit by QB. The class will benefit, hopefully on the O side with skill positions. Congrats to the young man and his family, and kudos to the staff.

Lorenzo Styles took notice of his commitment last night and congratulated him on twitter.

I'm hoping this can help with guys like Styles, McMillan, Humphreys, Dixon, and maybe even Tyree.

Wow - nice drive-by from someone that hardly discusses this team(at least on this forum).

Congrats to Tyler and his family. Hope the nation's best skill players take notice.

No questioning his talent and potential, but you’re right. A lot of things can happen between now and then. Let’s hope the road from Cali to South Bend has all of its pot holes filled between now and then.

Matt Freeman is texting me like a crazy ex gf right now. He says this is a 10 star recruit.

Asian jokes aside, he thinks Bucher is a potential all timer. He couldn't be higher on him.

Yeah but remember... he also thought Yoon would be like the greatest scorer in ND history or something.

I do think (hope?) having Shane Walton as a coach and the fact that we stayed with him when he got hurt both bode well for this kid actually signing with ND.

San Diego is completely different from the LA/Sacramento “California Curse” you’re referring to. Over all it’s a Conservative area with heavy military influence. Bishop is one of the most prestigious schools in the state. La Jolla is also one of the richest areas of the state as well. It wasn’t named The Jewel for nothing.

My hope is that he can red shirt his first year behind Phil and then be a 3 year starter and win us multiple Natty's. I want Phil to get a couple years which won't happen if Tyler is a day 1 starter.

The only way I'd want him to start day 1 is if Phil wins the battle this year and leaves after his junior year as a 1st round pick.

I'd bet major Vbucks now that if healthy, Book starts 19 and 20. I don't see TB starting as a true FR. PJ will have two years at that point. And I don't see PJ getting pissed and leaving if Book starts this year and next, and I doubt he's scared of a true frosh coming in 21. What happens in 22, is probably more up to PJ (his performance in 21) than anyone else. If PJ though somehow fell behind Clarke this year or next, or Pyne next, they yes, he might bolt. I don't see that happening either.

To me, that's a great road map. Book 19 and 20, PJ 21 and 22, TB 23 and 24 (and skipping his last year of eligibility to go to the pros). First world problems.

Everything you laid out above is definitely first world problems. This QB depth is insane, I love it. Getting TB this early should work out great for the staff to recruit skill talent for his class as well.

Not to mention in the bold, PJ will likely get his shot to start at some point in 2020 and/or 2021 just due to injury (not that I'm rooting ever for our starting QB to get hurt, obviously); keep in mind that in 2017, BW had to sit @ UNC and in 2018 Book had to sit vs. FSU, both due to injury. QBs take plenty of hits in this offense. I strongly believe we will know quite a bit about 5 * Phil well before he is named full-time starter.

This came up on the 247 board as Tim O’Malley asked Book during his cotton bowl press conference about it. Book wanted his name submitted for the NFL evaluation but couldn’t because a school can only submit a max of 5 names and there were higher priorities. Sounds like with a good 2019 Book won’t be coming back for a 5th year.

Am I on crazy pills?

I love Ian, but NFL? Early to boot?

NFL Arm: No
NFL Legs: No
NFL Size: No

I fully expect Ian to improve. I think he's good enough to make it in the NFL, but a late draft pick or free agent I believe.

Really? Good that the dude is ambitious but I just don’t see that one happening. Maybe he’ll hang around as a backup for a few years but getting a good enough grade to warrant jumping early seems unlikely.
Though I suppose people said the same about Tom Brady back in the day. Ha.

Either way, agree Book leaving after ‘19 is probably smoothest for our QB Depth Chart Management purposes. Not to mention probably best for Book. (If he’s not good enough to go pro after two seasons starting, will he be good enough to hold off Phil and remain the starter?)

Would be nice to have an orderly transition for once.

They did some digging on this after he stated that and he wasn't entering his name because he really was considering declaring for the 19' draft. It was more to gauge where he was at. However, it's all but guaranteed that if all goes according to plan this season, he is leaving for the 20' draft

I got nothing but love for Book, but I don't think he's an NFL QB. Looks like Buchner already has a better arm than Ian.

Not picking on you as you are just the latest to do this, but not sure why everyone always says "early" if a player does not come back for a 5th year. Julian is leaving early. Ian Book leaving after next season is not leaving early. Just saying.

Not picking on you either but he has NFL legs and size. It's just at his size, he has to have Brees or Wilson's arm.

I'll will bet all the vbucks that Book plays professional football. Anyone want some of this action?

Early, as in, leaving before maxing out eligibility.

I understand the difference. I figured that was implied.

On a NFL team? I'll take some of that action. The CFL or AAF possibly, but I don't see him donning a NFL uni (as much as I'd love to see it).
