Yeah, once he is fully recovered from injury there is no doubt he has top tier athleticism. Probably not Wimbush level, but still elite for a QB.

With all the consternation in the McCarthy thread I think it's interesting that people don't appreciate how truly elite Buchner's physical skill set is. He has an unbelievable arm talent, and good size coupled with mobility. The only thing that can really derail him is injuries, and the only legitimate rationale for wanting McCarthy would've been that he was local and more likely to stick 1.5 years from taking a commitment.

It's more than being local. Future 4* DE Rodney McGraw is right next door in Elkhart but ND will have an uphill battle until NSD if they are ever in the race.

JJ's from a program (that was) tied to ND's hip. His feelings about ND were well known. We watched him grow 4" and start to look like a future P5 QB since he came on the radar. He plays against good 7A comp and won the state championship and lastly, he produced in a offense that produces DI players every year.

TB is in Cali, (though a former Chicagolander which he gets points for). He's a former Michigan commit, (subtract all points), No doubt he's a physical specimen. I'm a Bears guy and if Mitch Trubisky would have been this developed, JT Barrett or Malik Zaire would've gone someplace else because Trubisky would have had either spot he wanted. TB will put up Nintendo numbers at Bishop's because they play a trash schedule for a major metro area. Lastly is the production... there is none. I know it's coming but I have no idea if he's fully healed, if he's the same level of athlete he was before. And we don't get to find out until ND lost its shot at JJ. I can't ignore the unknown after an injury, that's the same reason I'm neutral on the AJ Henning and it appears he's not the same after hip flexor surgery based on reported track times.

All that said, I'm absolutely stoked to have TB, just wish the perfect demographic package that is JJ would have come along in a year that didn't have TB in it.

We all wish that. JJ would've been signed in a heartbeat in 2019, 2020 and probably 2022. He happened to be coming up when we had already found someone we were pursuing hard.

Stop. Dudes a stud

It's not about McCarthy being a good prospect. McCarthy is objectively a very talented player and a good prospect. But does anyone actually think Ohio State and Notre Dame would've taken the approach they did to McCarthy if they evaluated him as being as good as his #19 overall rating? Does it make sense he fell in Michigan's lap with that being his only major regional offer that was actionable? I could say a lot of negative things about why he was evaluated that way, but I'm fairly certain if I do I'm going to end up eating those words when he proves people wrong.

Anyways, my post is about Tyler Buchner having truly elite tools and being grossly underappreciated by this board. It is what it is... I've bit my tongue a lot in these threads, but I've seen enough emotional energy being wasted on McCarthy I've got to say my piece. Buchner is the kind of player that if he avoids injury and puts it all together has no ceiling. He doesn't have mechanics issues, velocity issues, accuracy issues, athleticism issues, sizes issues... there are no negatives. He is as complete of a prospect as you can find from a physical standpoint. Can he use those tools when the lights are on? We'll see. But I would bet dollars to donuts you see him torch teams this season, and the only way he stays out of being a top 10 overall recruit is going to be bias or an injury.

If 1.5 years from now Buchner signs somewhere else it will make Kelly & Co. look like fools. On general principle I don't like signing Cali players, but Buchner is a bit of an exception for obvious reasons. Agree with Crusader that I wish he'd been a '19 or '20 recruit and we aren't even having this discussion.

Also worth noting the top QB in the Midwest almost always turns out to be over-hyped garbage. In the past 10 years I think the only one that panned out was Drew Lock. Might be wrong, but off my top of my head they almost always end up transferring or being sub-NFL caliber players.

This got me curious, so I looked it up. The top-rated Midwest QB in each cycle was:

Max Duggan
Quincy Patterson
Hunter Johnson
Brandon Peters
Drew Lock
Clayton Thorson
Shane Morris
Gunner Kiel
Braxton Miller
Devin Gardner

That's a pretty mixed bag.

Valid Points. The lack of film on TB hurts him on this board. I'm high on JJ. The more he fills out, the better he'll be. We have a loooong way to wait for both of these kids to end up at either school. Almost pointless to compare right now

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me the majority of the board is excited about Buchner and believes he is elite.

I think so as well but it's hard to tell as JJ's profile gets bumped a lot from the jilted lover among us, lol.

I'm very excited about Buchner. I initially wanted JJ, I think both will be studs in college, but I've seen all I need to see on Buch to know he's a real good QB. His release is so smooth and appears to have really good arm strength without losing accuracy. I just hope he can stay healthy. That's really my biggest concern.

Man, he has a cannon. I've heard people describe the ball as exploding out of a players hand, that's what it looks like with Tyler.

Man. That's what elite arm talent looks like. You can tell he's pushing those through the wind too. So glad ND got this kid locked up already. If there's a better QB in the '21 class I'll be shocked. Excellent job by the staff getting him in the class early. Gonna be fun to watch in a few years.

The more I watched it I became more enamored with his footwork. So consistent throughout the video

Only real concern with Buchner is when USC or UCLA (if Chip gets them into shape) come calling at him hard. Well, that and the fact that he has barely played high school football.
He sure does look the part though.

I want to sign this kid today. Holding on to him for 2 years is going to be nerve-wracking.

Dang, get a commitment to whoever that receiver is also. He appeared to effortlessly track down every throw made towards him.

ND needs to keep an eye on Clarence Freeman. He's the WR in the video that didn't drop a pass (that I saw). He had a 1000+ yds receiving and 12 TD's w/o Buchner last season. Also had 6 Int's and a PR-TD. He's got all the Ivy's after him. Good genes too, his uncle's former Pro-Bowler Antonio Freeman.

Would make a fine PWO and who knows... maybe he's a late bloomer and ends up 6-1 like his uncle?

This is from above. TB5's latest video posted was from when Loy was out to see him right before his committment. It was posted earlier in the thread in March.

Dude is gonna be 6' 3" 230 by the time he hits campus lmaooooooo I hope he is our next Clausen type talent.

I really hate that Buchner and Pyne are in back to back classes. I think both are going to be really good and Buchner seems the type who could actually start as a freshman. I don't know why, but I think he's going to be that good. I hate that he might have to sit for a couple of years but if Pyne is the real deal, he might have to. First world problems

When they do that, it typically means they are closer to 6'2" than 6'3". lol

I’ve seen basketball recruits lie about their height for years but football is almost just as bad. He’s probably 6’1” at this point in this development. Even college exaggerate height. Having seen Robert Hainsey standing next to Liam Eichenberg, it’s a joke that they list Hainsey at 6’5”. That guy could honestly be closer to 6’2” than 6’5”.

hmmm...is it blasphemous to say I wasn't that impressed with that vid? I like Tyler and I'm sure he's still acclimating his post-ACL repair but for a 6 TD night, that was fairly meh.
